Beer Style

Hi Daniel

As you may have noticed I'm going through the beer and brewery sections of Wiki tidying up and adding information. I've recently done some work on your Beer Styles article. It's a very good article so forgive me for reworking it. I may not get around to it for a couple of days, but it appears to me that this article would be a good place to go into some detail on the various approaches to beer style theory from Jackson's seminal work through the BJCP to current thinking, including Josh Oakes' "advanced beer styles" approach. Would you have any thoughts on this development of your original article?

O yes! Blundering around like a freshly castrated bull. I trampled on a few Wiki prize roses and got one guy gnashing his hair and weeping in despair. It's a strange place to a newcomer this Wiki world. If it wasn't for members like yourself welcoming me and pointing me in the right direction I might have collapsed under the weight of the vitriol that came my way from one disturbed individual. Hey mate

I'm not sure where you are located and therefore have no idea whether you are familiar with British breweries. I just wondered whether you could give me any advice on these pages: Crouch Vale Brewery, Nethergate brewery, Young's Brewery and Greene King. I started the first two from scratch and altered the other two from various degrees (Greene King from a stub) and was wondering what you thought and how they fitted into your project. I'm now slowly trying to create/update more English breweries. I'm currently working on Ridley's brewery. I think I'll post my contributions on the project page; it's really late here and I'm f'n shattered (as well as a little drunk - as any member from the Beer Wikiproject should be!)! Cheers again for the positive comments. I did as you advised and left a comment on the talk page of the project. I'm Cream Crackered now (see Cockney rhyming slang!) seeing as it's earling morning here I think I'll go to sleep and sleep off any beer project related illness that might manifest come morning! I just added Ridley's brewery; there wasn't much to say, since it was more of an addendum to the Greene King article than anything but needed writing.

Beer Info Box

I've been speaking with User:Mike Dillon about the beer info box. Actually, I started the conversation elsewhere, but it ended up with him because he appeared to be doing some work with the box. I think it's a potentially very useful item. I see info boxes in other areas that are useful. But I am concerned that our present use of the beer box is unhelpful and unattractive. I like the location, owner, production, and date of founding information. This is hard, mostly unchanging info. The beer listing, however, is controversial, long and unhelpful. All too often I see brewery articles which consist of little more than lists of beers in a beer info box. This does seriously limit flexibility and discussion on the beers; and encourages people to simply list all the beers they can name from that particular brewery. Also, within the beer box, there is a focus on selecting a style name for a beer when beer style is mainly an American activity - different countries have different ways of approaching the identification of a beer - in Britain, for example, the beers are identified mainly by abv; while in France the beers are identified mainly by colour. Beer discussion is best done within the article where regional differences can be more readily accommodated and explored. I have been experimenting with different usage of the beer info box to see what elements work best. My current thinking is that it is very useful as an address and hard info box (owner, annual production, outlets, contact details, etc) placed centrally at the bottom of the page, and should perhaps be designed to be wider. And it might also be good to include links to other breweries in the immediate area. Anyway - what are your thoughts? I'd like to bring this up on the beer notice board, but thought it best to get a general feel for things first so that a more polished and clear proposal could be formulated to avoid a long protracted debate. I certainly agree that it needs to be put up on the public notice board, but as yet I am not clear in my own mind as the best way forward. I am feeling my way through the beer project, and I find differing and inconsistent use of the beerbox. To avoid a controversial, long drawn out and possibly fruitless debate I thought that those most closely involved in the beer project and use of the box could share thoughts to see if we had views in common. Are there areas in which we are in agreement? Such as using the box for Owner, Address, Year of Founding, Production, etc. Are there areas in which we both uncertain? Such as using the box for beer lists. Are there areas in which we are in disagreement? Such as position and shape of the box (and probably colour). Are there areas in which we feel the box could be used but are not? I think the main thing I feel uncomfortable about with regards to boxes is that they are difficult to change, so they create a fixed format for well into the future. And boxes are less easy to use and edit for general users. There is this sense that they are an imposition on brewery articles, giving a single viewpoint of the person who creates or moulds the box. I suppose - come to think of it - perhaps the first stage of consideration should be do we need the boxes in the first place? What benefits do we gain from using a beer box over not using a beer box? It may be that a beer box could be useful, but perhaps not just yet while people are still formulating how to tackle articles about beer brands and breweries. What is a brewery? Some brewpubs are chains - all selling the same beer, but making those beers on different sites. Some breweries are single buildings - others are multiple sites. Some breweries are global companies dealing in a range of beverages. Some breweries don't brew but contract out to other breweries. Some people are writing about breweries which are closed. To formulate a fixed beer box that can take into account the myriad situations we are encountering is perhaps too ambitious and too early. I'm not suggesting doing away with beer boxes, just expressing some doubts about their validy and usefulness at this stage. SilkTork 10:12, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Re:Several Edits

According to the guidelines set out at Wikipedia:Lead section, those lead sections are of appropriate length, or sometimes, still too short. Generally, lead sections can range from one to four paragraphs. If you take a look at the articles being promoted at Wikipedia:featured articles, you should see the proportionately, the lengths of the lead sections of these articles are far from being too long.--Jiang 01:18, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I remember the leads being shorter (one liners were the norm) until about 2-2.5 years ago. I don't know when the guidlines were changed/created, but I saw other people doing it and caught on.--Jiang 02:07, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Beer Wiki

I've recently begun trying to get this Wiki up and going. It's a Wikimedia wiki that went defunct and I and another person are trying to revitalize it. If you are interested and or know people who might be interested in getting this up and going, that would be great. I'm Severian over there and it'd be nice to get more help and start this wiki. We are basically free to do what we want, we don't need a NPOV or whatever that contrains the people in Wikipedia. Deleting Categories of Jewish Athletes

Hi. I believe this is related to an issue that has interested you in the past. At http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion#Category:Jewish_fencers some people are suggesting that Jewish athletes, beginning with Jewish Fencers, should be deleted. I do not think that is the correct approach, or consistent with wiki policy, and thought that others might want to weigh in on the discussion.
