Commercial links edit

Please stop adding links to your web site to Wikipedia pages. See wp:not#Wikipedia_is_not_a_soapbox for an explanation of why this is not appropriate. Thanks. Please also note that according to Wikipedia username policy, Accounts with usernames that advertise a particular website, company, etc. (e.g. "visit [name of url]" ) are discouraged and may be blocked. -- RoySmith (talk) 14:26, 29 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Reply to your question about commercial links edit

Hi, and thanks for your note. There is certainly no blanket prohibition against external links to commercial web sites. The distinction is that on, for example, America's Cup, the links are all to articles about the same subject as the Wikipedia article. Each link was added by an individual editor who (presumably) had no commercial interest in the site they linked to, but who thought the information there would add to the information presented in the Wikipedia article.

By contrast, you added the same link to the home page of your web site to several dozen Wikipedia articles. This is clearly just an attempt to drive traffic to your web site. The purpose of Wikipedia is not to provide free advertising space to commercial web site operators.
