Camp Grohn

Hi, I left this comment on the article's talk page:

The article states Camp Grohn was built by U.S. forces, but the Jacobs University site mentions the first construction was in 1936 and was part of what the Germans called Flak-Kaserne. Photos of the original Flak-Kaserne and Camp Grohn look very similar. I think the German casern was taken over for use as a D.P. camp and then for use of U.S. forces until the late 1950's when it was turned over to the West German Army and called Roland Kaserne. The West German Army used this facility as a logistics training facility before it was finally inactivated and became the current university.

Bender235deleted over 3 months and 300 hours of my work, 40,000 characters of edits, and hundreds of constructive additions to the page. I am in the midst of uploading an enormous amount of PRIMARY SOURCE DATA and he deleted everything done so far as "wikipedia can not be a source for itself". I am enraged. There was not one comment, warning, question, request, or suggestion from this "editor". Can you please help me reverse all the deletions and keep this guy off the page. @Bruxton: Thank you for reviewing the page I created on Charles Marsh. I appreciate it. Most of the references are newspaper articles, and they are accessible on-line at newspapers.com. However, newspapers.com is a subscription service, so there is a fee.

The references I cited from the collection of the Nevada County Historical Society are paper records, not digital. They have them in their files, but access to them would either have to be in person, or by mail or email.

The book manuscript I cited has an anticipated publication date of spring 2023. When the book comes out, I will update the citations, and include the ISBN number.

You accuse me of "deliberately introducing incorrect information" and "vandalizing" Wikipedia. That charge is complete nonsense.

You state that if I believe the information I added was correct I should "cite references or sources." Yet, that is precisely what I did. I included citations for every single paragraph that I wrote.

You apparently think that my sources are incorrect, but you offer nothing to refute them.

Instead of offering ANYTHING to contradict ANY of the 11 sources I cited, you simply deleted the entire seven paragraphs that I wrote on the "Rio Grande 223" article (and you made the same sweeping deletion on the D&RG Narrow Gauge Trestle article).

I am not familiar with Wikipedia’s procedures, but I would appreciate it if you would reconsider arbitration in this case. I don’t have much hope that it will be resolved properly otherwise.

It has also been the subject of Xboxtravis7992’s Administrator Request for Protected Status for Rio Grande 223 (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Trains).

About two weeks ago, I submitted a request for mediation on the Wikipedia Dispute Resolution Noticeboard. I have not had a response.

About a week ago, I sent a message to TransporterMan, who is a Wikipedia volunteer mediator. I have not had a response.

If there is something else I should be doing, please let me know specifically what it is (preferably with a link to the appropriate form).

The Issue:

The dispute on the “Rio Grande 223” article boils down to one thing: Should the article include a section on the locomotive’s historical significance, or not?

I feel that it should. Xboxtravis7992 does not.

There is an underlying issue here that you should be aware of. The engine is likely to be restored in the near future, and there are differences of opinion on how it should be configured. It was built in 1881, but as parts wore out over the engine’s long life, they got replaced with more modern parts. So, now the question becomes: Should it be restored to its appearance in the 1800s, or its 20th-century appearance?

Why does this matter? It shouldn’t, but unfortunately, it does. It leads to passionate debate in the railfan community. One of the points in favor of backdating some elements of the engine to its 1800s appearance is that the 1800s were the most significant time period in the engine’s life.

Xboxtravis7992 wants the engine restored to its 20th-century appearance, and as a result does not want to admit that its historical significance was in the 1800s. His editing of the Wikipedia article reflects this.

The content of the Wikipedia article should be edited solely on its historical accuracy and encyclopedic importance. Editing should not be colored by a restoration debate on the engine that is best left for some other forum.

History of the Dispute:

The “Rio Grande 233” article is 20 paragraphs long, and goes into rather intricate detail on the engine’s mechanical history and operational history (much of which Xboxtravis7992 wrote). I added a 6-paragraph section on the historical significance of the engine, which I thought was reasonable.

Xboxtravis7992 erased the entire section, claiming it was "fluff."

He has done this 7 times now (on Feb. 16, Feb. 28, Mar. 9, Mar. 13, Mar. 20, Mar. 24 and Apr. 1).

He has come up with a variety of criticisms (such as lack of adequate in-line citations) and then uses that as a pretext to erase the entire section. This is not impartial editing. It is editing with an agenda.

I have responded to his criticisms, as well as the comments of other editors on the Talk page, by adding additional citations to the article, modifying the text, and shortening the section to 4 paragraphs. Some of the other editors have made modifications to the text as well, in an effort to resolve the dispute.

However, none of this is satisfactory to Xboxtravis7992. He has again eliminated the entire section, with the exception of half of one sentence. He even erased what was written by the other editors.

And, he has also eliminated all of the historic photographs in the article.

This is not a compromise.

My request:

Please review how the “Rio Grande 223” article stood after my revision dated 16:13, March 25, 2024, and compare that with how it stands today.

I think you will agree that the section I wrote on the historical significance of the engine, and the historical photographs in the article, are relevant, accurate and helpful to the reader.
