Stubs

Yes, it's a difficult question. An obvious stub is an article where clearly more needs to be said, and an obvious non-stub is one where all or most aspects have been covered, not necessarily in great detail. So for articles about operas, I'd be inclined to de-stub them if they include date and place of first performance, list of roles, synopsis, list of recordings, and references and external links, if any. Other sections (background, sourced discussion on the music, more performance history, role creators, etc.) are desirable, but the article can stand alone without them for the time being.

For other opera-related articles (singers, directors, managers, opera houses, companies, genres, etc.) it's more problematic. It depends on how much there is to say, but then, for example, a complete list of every performance in which a particular singer appeared would be rather wearying, and not all that notable, even for Maria Callas or Enrico Caruso. So one has to use one's skill and judgement.

Les Troyens

Hi there, we in opera project is trying to make the information as complete as possible, therefore the frame format has been standardized into almost all articles excpet for the some with lack of info. Yes, he studied in Brno, I´ve added it to the article. Another important fact: Hrůša´s father is renowned and respected Czech architect Petr Hrůša (atelier Hrůša-Pelčák), he projected many awarded buildings (and maybe deserves own article). Hello DJRafe. No, I don´t intend to create the article for Petr Hrůša, and you´re probably right, he´s not enough renowned internationally. Nevertheless, I would support creating of this article also on English wikipedia, since Hrůša sr. is one of the most important architects in the Czech Republic in last two decades, he and his works appear in almost all books about contemporary Czech architecture, and his notability prove also many google hits (most of them is unfortunately in Czech). The precise English article may be very useful also for some people, who can´t speak Czech.

I consider the English wikipedia rather as a world encyclopedia, with detailed and complex informations from all parts of the world. I´m very glad, when I find here specific informations from various, often obscure, areas. The English version is more useful for me, since the informations about classical music, or the culture topics in general are on Czech wikipedia very underdeveloped, and I can´t find help there. That´s why I decided to work here, even though my English language skills are imperfect. The world (not only English world) works together right here, the possibilities are much bigger. But this whole matter is just my point of view, I´m always willing to listen to others, to reach an agreement, and I don´t intend to add to wikipedia not notable or nonsense stuff. Ben Lyons

Yeah, I've seen his edit history, which is why I presented my suspicions of a conflict of interest when I presented his edits to the administrator noticeboard. He's currently banned for a bit. However, while I kept your edits to the rest of the page, I did revert the criticism section. Not because your edits were in bad faith or hurt the article explicitly, but because it is better to have sections like that in prose rather than bulleted lists. Also, I'm curious as to why you felt the section wasn't neutral. Of course it paints a percieved negative light of Lyons, but when I wrote it I tried to make sure that it was clear that each statement made was a sourced statement from another person, and I don't think that the prose surrounding the quotes reflects any bias. But that doesn't mean I'm against toning it down, I just think that we should come to a consensus of just what we're toning down. Either way, thanks for helping out with the article. CTM scope review

Following on from this discussion, I have started to review the scope of WP:CTM's coverage on WP. There are two main possiblilies, so far:

1. We refine our scope according to the "written in the last 50 years or so" statement agreed upon a few months back and included in the Overview - Scope section on the main page.
2. We redefine our scope to include only living people and their works (while retaining the other relevent articles such as contemporary classical music etc).

The former position was agreed by consensus, of course, so redefining our scope to the latter position is a radical shift that needs full discussion and consensus. In essence, the question of redefining arises from the recent mass sourcing drama:

1. It has been suggested that CTM take full responsibility for all composer BLPs.
2. If that goes ahead, WPComposers may wish to unbanner composer BLPs and leave them to CTM (see here for example).
3. Therefore, CTM simply focusses in on those people relevent to our project but not bannered by other projects eg composers with BLPs.
4. Other articles on people are then treated in a similar way ie we would then cover BLPs only and their related articles (plus any other contemporary-music-related articles, as appropriate).

I am also looking more generally at our project's focus, especially as regards the notability criteria etc: User:Jubileeclipman/CTM. Thoughts on that are also most welcome!

Tzigane

Thanks to your improvements the article on Eugene Tzigane doesn't say the slightest bit on music. I can read the German refs which show that a lot, but others may have a problem. Please expand. I would be more interested in his work than his private life. Also I don't believe that he is "known" under his original family name. Hi. :) I have again corrected the information on his romantic affiliations to conform with the source used. WP:BLP, of course, requires impeccable sourcing for biographical details; in this case, however, the alteration was done at behest of the article subject, who has edited as User:Fredchaslin and confirmed his identity to the Wikimedia Foundation via e-mail (Ticket:2010100510005546, though I'm afraid only individuals with access to Foundation e-mails can confirm this; if you'd like to ask another one to confirm, please see meta:OTRS/personnel). As indicated at his talk page, Mr. Chaslin would prefer no information about his private life at all; however, it is beyond the scope of the e-mail response team to remove material from reliable sources. That said, particularly when the subject has complained, we must make sure that the information in the articles conforms to the sources provided. 2002 is 8 years ago, not presently. Kinderszenen

A few years ago you added the following sentence (among many others) to Kinderszenen:

Robert Polansky has discussed the unused movements.

The online reference you gave for that statement does not provide any meaningful information on what Polansky said about the unused movements, because only the first page of the cited article is available on that site to the general public. That leaves the typical Wikipedia reader with only the fact that Polansky discussed the movements. Surely what matters is what Polansky said about them, not just the fact that he said something.

Most readers have no idea who Robert Polansky is and why his discussing some topic is noteworthy, but anyone reading this WP article might well be interested in what he said about this topic. If it's useful to tell the reader that Polansky said something about Kinderszenen, it would be even more useful to give the reader some idea what he said. To say that he said something and then not say what he said is somewhat like telling a child you know a secret and then not revealing what the secret is.

Instead of bothering you, I first tried to get the information and add it myself; but when I followed the link I found that access to the whole article is restricted and unavailable to me. If you have access to the full article cited, it would be helpful to WP readers if you could add a brief summary of what Polansky said about the unused movements. If not, in my opinion, it would be better to remove that sentence, because its main effect is to frustrate the reader rather than add to his or her understanding of the article's subject.

Hi, DJRafe ! I understand your idea of toning down some hagiographic (and potentially unencyclopedic) statements in Wiki articles. However, the "widely considered one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century" compliment, regardless of whether it's true or not, has been applied to many other pianists other than Gilels: it is there on the first paragraphs of the Wiki articles on Richter, Rubinstein, Arrau and Michelangeli, amongst others - to say nothing of the piece on Alfred Brendel, which comes with an even taller claim: "one of the greatest pianists of all time" (!!). It seems to me that, provided there are sufficiently reliable sources, this kind of declaration does not violate Wikipedia standards. Either that or, for the sake of consistency, the "widely considered" line should be removed from every article on pianists and musicians in general, and not just from Gilels'. Your cut and paste move has been undone

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Budapest Symphony Orchestra a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra

I've added some first-hand testimony as to the foundation of that orchestra on the comments page.

At the same time, I see some wider background on me might be useful. Alleyn's School Choir was wrecked by Britten in the concerns which sullied his career in the 1950s, after he and one of the pupils, the future filmstar David Hemmings, shared a bed during the premiere run of The Turn of the Screw at La Fenice. David was 11, and took the role of Miles, the abused boy. They both affirmed to the end of their days that "shared a bed" was as far as it went, but the results of Britten's first-hand coaching had a perceptible effect on Hemmings, and mentoring brought the story out: the School saw both on their way, the norm of the day.

A decade later, three of us pupils took the vocal side of what was already a leading stage school in hand (it was the birthplace of the National Youth Theatres), and it has since produced a very reputable number of stars. One of our trio, David Roblou, went on to fame as the Guildhall School of Music's top baroque voice coach. For myself, my family was close to Sir Geraint Evan's family, I knew Brenda well (from doing the family wash on Sunday mornings), then was in Simon Rattle's circle in Birmingham in 1977, and finally bounced off Riccardo Muti whenever he was in London, as he'd come to visit his aunt, who was Cadbury Schweppes HQ telephonist.

Having given Clare Roberts the heads-up on the arrival of WEU, which gave her the funding to establish the BPO, I have a mild sense of responsibility as one of my offspring, although the real credit it Clare's: mine was more a hyperserendipitous trigger to what was already latent, the question of what one does when nearing the end of one's training in an instrument - she's a French horn player.

Personal attacks

Its nice to see that after 14 years here you still have time to call people an "idiot" for what is obviously a good faith edit. And the "bull in a china shop" part has some weird racial undertones that I will look past. Very classy. Collapsing 3–4+ nav boxes is a standard practice.. look at articles for any US president (e.g. John Quincy Adams & Andrew Jackson) or FA artists such as Michael Jackson... you seem to be ruled by WP:IDONTLIKEIT in this case, so I would urge you to revise your opinion. I've not restored them myself, since I'm willing to communicate—rather than leaving incomplete edit summaries and personal attacks—but I've restored certain information in Chailly that you removed without explanation, and sourced it further.
