Trying to give the fuller picture edit
Dear Modernist- Please do not remove the date and place of death. Sonia did die yesterday; I have an e-mail from her daughter. Dear EEng- I have read of multiple people being credited with coining the word "beatnik." One definitely is Herb Caen. Another is Etya Gechtoff, who owned the East and West gallery in San Francisco. This comes from assemblage artist Bruce Conner who first heard the word at his one-man show at the gallery which he says was in June, 1958. That much you know from having checked the reference I provided. However, based on family records, Gechtoff was in a wheelchair at that point and would not have been involved with a major show. Conner's show was mostly likely in March, 1958. I have tried to find an absolute date for his show, but have been unable to do so. In the meantime, can we agree on language that suggests that there shades of uncertainty?
- It sounds like you've found some interesting stuff, but unfortunately that kind of primary material can't be the basis for facts stated in articles. (See WP:PRIMARY.) Beyond that, to make use of Conner we have to believe his memory is correct about some things, and disbelieve his memory about other things -- exactly the right combination to get a certain result. If some historian, anthropologist, or etymologist uses this kind of "adjustment" (backed up by sound reasoning) to arrive at a conclusion about an alternative origin of the term, then the article might present both theories, but as things stand there's no source on Gechtoff except Conner's interview -- and, again, that's not usable as a fact source even at face value, much less with us as editors adjusting his account. - I agree with EEng in that it is believable that Caen got the term from somebody else, possibly Gechtoff, but that we do not have strong enough sourcing make this contradictory conclusion in Wikipedia's voice. Multiple sources say that Caen coined the term. The only way to change that is to quote a very reliable source saying otherwise. Even then we would tell the reader that most sources say Caen but here's this other contradictory source. Binksternet (talk) 22:32, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
