Crayfish pinch edit

[Copied from the Crayfish talk page]

I have heard that crayfishes are capable of pinching people with their claws, both in real life and literature. Is this true?--Crustaceanguy 01:34, 17 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello! edit

Howdy... Just thought I'd drop you a note, seeing as you're clearly a crustacean lover like me -- have a look at these little fellas. Amano Shrimp. I own a couple of these shrimp, and they're brilliant to watch. Sadly, they didn't get on with my triops, but then they're probably going to inherit his tank.

Happy reading! --Xanthine 00:09, 30 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Why, thank you!I am glad to hear from you.If you have any questions about Triops and/or other crustaceans, just ask me.--Crustaceanguy 00:26, 30 January 2007 (UTC) By the way, crustaceans are my favourite group of animals.--Crabby 23:32, 4 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Rock crab edit

how about making a rock crab (Cancer irroratus) page? They seem to be sorta the northwest Atlantic version of C. pagurus. Thanks from Provincetown harbor - capecodnaturalist, Peter

I'll say that sounds like a good idea, except I don't know much about those crabs - not enough for a decent article, anyway.--Crustaceanguy 20:16, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Rocko edit

Where in the film Finding Nemo did Dory call Nemo "Rocko"? A•N•N•A hi! 03:03, 22 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I just remembered: it was on Wikiquote. I also watched the movie again (only the parts where Dory appeared, actually) and could not find it. Apparently, this started when someone added "Poor Rocko" to the list on Wikiquote. User:Jeffq on Wikiquote has the same question[1]. The names listed on Wikiquote (except for Rocko) are the only ones I heard of. --Crustaceanguy(t/co/cw) 00:05, 23 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

hm... I wanted to send you an email, but I think you've disabled this option. -PhDP (talk) 20:28, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for the inconvenience. Could you describe to me, briefly, what it was going to be about? --Crustaceanguy 21:01, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
It's about a research project of mine involving crustaceans. -PhDP (talk) 21:46, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
That sounds interesting, but I may not yet be expert enough in the field. What are the requirements of joining the project? --Crustaceanguy 21:54, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Send me an email and I'll reply with a description of the project. -PhDP (talk) 06:40, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
All right, I'll enable the email option, then. Thank you. --Crustaceanguy 12:13, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Fairy shrimp" edit

Sorry to have to do this to you, but I don't think Category:Fairy shrimps is a good name for a category. I'm also not sure we need the category at all; categories only need to be split when there are too many articles in them to be comfortably navigated without subdividing. In the case of Category:Branchiopoda, that point is still a long way in the future. If such a category did become necessary, then I think Category:Anostraca would be a better option for the name; the plural of "shrimp" is "shrimp", not "shrimps", and it's not clear that the term necessarily covers all members of Anostraca (e.g. "brine shrimp"). I thought I should explain the reasons for the changes I'm about to make before you saw me mass-reverting your efforts and felt aggrieved. --Stemonitis 16:58, 11 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for informing me, I understand. I'll be more careful with categories from now on. About the name, I chose "fairy shrimps" as the main article is called Fairy shrimp, and I have always heard "brine shrimp" being referred to as a subgroup of "fairy shrimp". As for the plural, Encarta Dictionary and many others list "shrimp" and "shrimps" as alternatives[2]. However, if the plural form "shrimp" is more common and familiar to more people, that is fine with me. And what about the other categories I created, which can be found here? --Crustaceanguy 17:28, 11 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think the others are fine. Especially with all the new articles User:Polbot has created, Category:Crustaceans would have been huge without categories like Category:Copepods. Category:Achelata could perhaps have waited, but isn't a bad category per se. --Stemonitis 17:51, 11 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for Image:Crustacean barnstar.png edit

Crusty sub-stubs... edit

See this existing proposal-page section to that effect. Alai 22:16, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

But why are you removing Category:copepods from these articles? Permanent categories and stub categories with the same scope are most definitely not redundant. Alai 23:12, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
You're probably correct, but most crustacean stubs are not in Category:Crustaceans...--Crustaceanguy 00:26, 7 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I believe most of them are (or were) in a (permanent) subcat, as that's how I counted up the viability of the various order-based (and thereabouts) stub-types I proposed. If you feel they should be in a finer-grained category instead (say at the family or genus level), that'd be fine too. Alai 18:29, 7 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I am also starting to think of splitting Category:Decapoda stubs, which contains over 500 articles currently.--Crustaceanguy 19:08, 7 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Question edit

Greetings,

A fellow Wikipedian, Wyatt uploaded this image:

Sand critter

We are curious to what it is, and thought maybe you could help. It was roughly 3/4 inch long. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks ! smooth0707 (talk) 15:17, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Very nice. This is, indeed, a crustacean, from the superfamily Hippoidea. These little beach dwellers are commonly called sand crabs or mole crabs, and are closely related to hermit crabs, and more distantly, to the true crabs. Sand crabs cannot walk, but they can dig into sand and swim quite well, unlike most crabs. However, your find looks too transparent and light to be an actual animal, so I suspect it is really an exoskeleton that the sand crab cast off while moulting. These crustaceans are safe to handle, as they do not have actual claws and cannot pinch. By the way, I resized the image on this page, so it would not take up so much space. Hope this helps!--Crustaceanguy (talk) 16:36, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Awesome! Thanks for the info. smooth0707 (talk) 17:49, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks!!! I've been asking around for about 4 months with no answer untill now! PS. The mole crab was actually alive and burrowing. Maybe it was an albino. Wyatt915 20:09, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! It might not be perfect - I am anything but an expert on these guys. Triops and pollutants edit

i'm doing a project on triops. how do they react to pollutants? if you can't find out, that fine. if you can't, can i put my findings on the triops page? TripleA AAA (talk) 23:54, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I will try to help you out, but what kind of pollutants are you talking about? Also, if you have some findings on this, you can put them right here. Unless your results are published, we cannot use them for the Notostraca articles, as that would be original research. But even then I would like to see what you have observed.--Crustaceanguy (talk) 21:41, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

how about putting it under an origional research section? —Preceding unsigned comment added by TripleA AAA (talkcontribs) 02:08, 7 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please take a look, your help might be needed there. --Maxxicum (talk) 00:24, 7 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I would be very glad to help out, but I am having some problems with my password. My e-mail option is enabled here at the English Wikipedia, so if you can e-mail me, that would be good. Thank you.--Crustaceanguy (talk) 02:39, 7 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
