AMA request edit

Hello, person with whom I've never interacted,
I'm currently one of the subjects of Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Webcomics. From the list at Wikipedia:Association of Members' Advocates, the only names I recognized were yours, Friday's, and errr, Snowspinner's. I'd like a conduit through which my responses can be channelled constructively without whipping up further bloodlust. Would you have the time and the inclination?

I don't have a talk-page policy, but I'll respond to everything on my page if that's ok with you. - brenneman(t)(c) 06:47, 8 December 2005 (UTC) (The question is, where will you post the answer?)Reply

Dead Bodies Don't Drown edit

Do you seriously sit around deleting pages? So I started a page for my clothing company. If no one knows about it, then whats the point of removing it? I'm sure theres a lot of useless info on this site that could go unknown. And what makes something "known"? The fact that it means something to you? -Lacstewie 18:28, 10 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Is this company still "unknown"? --71.71.213.126 (talk) 02:38, 14 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Don't know how you do it, but please don't tell me edit

You have some of the best unintentional humor on your talk page of any I've seen. I assume you must rack these up due to NP patrol and RC patrol. If I'm not voluminous enough on the workshop page and talk page of the ongoing RFar, you can also see some of my version of logic chopping of it on my talk page. Geogre 01:34, 11 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Just pointing that out because I'm going to have to archive sooner than usual due to length, and I don't want to obscure anything that might be of worth (e.g. the comments of others, as my views are well known). Geogre 01:36, 11 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Welcome remark edit

I noticed that you welcomed User:Almit39, with a message on user's talk page. I have just one remark. I wonder why you did not sign the welcome, I thought it is better if the user can get hold of the welcoming person. Wonder what you think. You can reply here, I will keep this page on my watchlist for a while. Cheers, Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 19:14, 12 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Any good-faith effort to improve the encyclopedia, even if misguided or ill-considered, is not vandalism. Apparent bad-faith edits that do not make their bad-faith nature inarguably explicit are not considered vandalism at Wikipedia. Booyeah bitches.

Fuck your fucking couch, because you classified my first attempt at fixing a small error in an inconsequential page, my entire run here will be one of vandalizm and chaos.

Hello ClockworkSoul edit

I would respectfully aske you to reevalute your stance.

The articte does not have any copyrighted material, all quotes are from scholars, and that is not copyrighted. It is true that i got the quotes from a web-site, but that does not mean that the one that collected the quotes have copyright over them. If that would be that case, nothing would be allowed to be quoted more than once.

The actual text from the article i got the quotes are not included in the article you deleted, it was totaly re-writen.

Fact is, the copyright allegation was forwarded by User:Zora, a user i feel stalked by. That is her way to get rid of the inoformation i presented. But in fact, her allegation does not hold a close scrutiny.

I look forward to your answer. Thanks --Striver 00:16, 18 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Wacky Neighbor edit

Hi -- I guess I was taking a small liberty with the term "neighbor." I figured in a show that seldom or never showed anyone's home (Cheers, Barney Miller), certainly there could still be a wacky neighbor -- maybe the wierd guy in the next cubicle, the manager of the restaurant next door, the uniformed officer who wants to be a plainclothes detective, etc. Note The Stuart's comment on 22 August -- he says Joey on Friends isn't a wacky neighbor because he is one of the main characters. So I figured a wacky neighbor could be any supporting or lesser character who is not a main character, and who is kind of quirky. I would argue that Klinger on MASH IS a wacky neighbor: he certainly was quirky, and in such a small "town" as a MASH unit, wasn't everyone a "neighbor"? Same thing with Festus on Gunsmoke: Dodge was a small town. No, it wasn't a sit-com, but the article doesn't state "exclusively in situation comedy." Still, I do respect your opinion on this matter, and I draw my colors. Would it be ok to list "every character other than Oliver and Lisa on Green Acres"? Spamlink? edit

I was wondering what was wrong with that link. Are you running a bot? I went to that article and read it. It was about the subject at hand (John Edwards). It is the second time someone has removed that link as spam, and I have no idea why. It was added by another editor a while back. --DocJohnny 03:50, 19 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Howdy Mister Soul, thanks for the answer. I went through his history and see that now. Well, it was an ok link, but not breathtaking. --DocJohnny 03:59, 19 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Why ... edit

... Because they were better representations of the external links and descriptions being provided, which is the essence of the Wikipedia -- ever changing, ever growing. Not taking it personally, but a website like usa-presidents.info, who's domain was registered just 1 year ago and who simply cut and paste content from others and call it a website, is a travesty. Because we have a directory that is rich in relevant information we thought the addition of our external links would be a service to the Wikipedia rather than hinder its development and growth. I won't ask you reconsider your actions but I do invite you to review our "About Us" page to learn more -- or not. -Parajuris 08:13, 19 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Years edit

Greetings.

Thanks for the compliment about my username. I'm kind of attached to it myself.

I personally think the dictum to refrain from linking (or to de-link currently linked) individual years is needlessly pedantic and provides no benefit to Wikipedia. That said, I am airing my opinions elsewhere and will defer to what appears to be the standard, however much I may disagree with it. I have reverted Beer back to your edit.

All the best.

  • Thanks for the heads-up. I think that the anon editor had good intentions, but for some reason the secondary source that he cited was being misleading. The web page's "science page" cites "Biochemist, Apr/May 1993, p 15. copyright of Royal Society of Chemistry website 2000", but no such journal as "Biochemist" exists. I found a few journals with similar names, though: Biochemistry, Bioconjugate Chemistry, and Biomacromolecules. Searching the entire year of 1993 turns up two articles that mentioned caffeine, and none that mentioned both caffeine and chocolate. A quick PubMed search however, find quite a number of articles that mention finding caffeine in both cocao and chocolate in the small quantities mentioned in the caffeine article. Thanks again! – ClockworkSoul 22:56, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Comment edit

In the ArbCom elections, you stated "the distain for community opionion that she's shown recently force me to conclude that she has lost the ability to be rational when the going gets hot." I don't understand why you feel this way. I thought I managed to stay cool and rational despite having what amounted to a virtual lynch mob at my throat. Could you explain to me why you feel that I failed to remain rational, and in addition why you think I have "disdain for community opinion"? I did read at least the first hundred or so comments (eventually I did quit after it was apparent that nothing new was being said) and am aware of community opinion, both for and against my point of view. I remain convinced that my actions were correct, but I understand that I have failed to do an adequate job of convincing the community of this (which, in large part, is because I felt that any attempt to argue or reason with the angry mob on my RfC would just inflame the situation more). What, if anything, do you think I should do at this point to help resolve matters? Kelly Martin (talk) 19:13, 9 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Beer Stuff edit

While you've been away the mice have been nibbling.... I've been barging my way quite happily through the beer project section. I've just come upon your Scottish And Irish entry. An odd marraige, no doubt devised by those buggers at BJCP who have never bothered to even glance at a map to notice that the two countries are not actually joined at the hip. Even though the people from those parts may sound alike to an American ear, that does not qualify for their beers being lumped together in such a random fashion. I am about to perform my first MOVE. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Please Help! I need some advocacy for WP:CITE in the article derny. But that's just the underlining problem. Please I need some assistance teaching some users about verifiability and a similar, yet 223% larger problem, exists at motorized bicycle. It's a long debate about verifiability and WP:CITE. Going into WP:NPOV. Seeing what just happened with the article Derny, (I added the footnote system, and then it was removed) I think we're in for a World War of idiots. Either that, or Wikipedia guidelines are wrong, where re-written and another hidden copy exists somewhere that I haven't read. (I don't think so!) Please, due to the nature of this request and arguably unnerving nature of the subject, I would suggest perhaps taking a cup of tea before reading on into the talk:motorized bicycle. User Page award edit

Congratulations, ClockworkSoul/Archive10! Your user page has been nominated for the Esperanza User Page Award! Five judges will look over your user page and award it 1-10 points in four categories:

  • Attractiveness: general layout, considering colour scheme and/or use of tables if applicable
  • Usefulness: links to subpages or editing aids, helpful information
  • Interesting-ness: quirky, unique, captivating, or funny content
  • General niceness: at the judges' discretion

But first, you must be chosen as a finalist. If your user page is chosen as one of the five finalists, you'll have the chance to win an award created just for having a great user page!

More information can be found on this page.

Caffeine (natural vs synthetic) edit

I saw your reply to my comment. I'm afraid not much has been written because it might have been an "industrial secret". In the late 1960s, in Europe, a country that required cola to state that it contained caffeine. Probably the legislation said that no additives or no artificial things should be added. I don't know what the regulatory statutes were. The cola company asked for analyses to determine if the white powder they wanted to add to the drink was of natural origin. Which some regulatory lab would check by measuring the carbon-14 content. Thus, if the white powder had modern C-14, nobody could ascertain if it was from natural kola nuts or added. The analyses were done by the techies, as an offduty side job. The lab was doing geochemistry and archeological dating, early research on C-14 and global warming, etc. Due to the atom bomb tests we could even tell the probably dates of the powder, one for the N Hemisphere and one for the S Hemisphere. The US Customs used tritium analyses to determine if the date on the imported European wines was true. Probably also used C-14. Try to look into forensic and food-analysis literature. I was directly involved in research using photosynthetic differences between C3 and C4 plants using C-13, to trace origin of sugars, and I can more easily find published material about this aspect but it's not relevant for caffeine... Jclerman 01:49, 10 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Interesting find. A commercial lab offers an 'authenticity testing of caffeine <<... checking for natural or synthetic sources in tea, coffee or guarana-containing drinks >> [2]

It intends to say: ...in drinks labeled as containing tea, coffee, or guarana...

This argument goes around and around so often, we may want to consider a creating a series of templates for it. Something like {{whatsthebigdeal}} to which one may reply {{becauseitmakesittooeasy}}. The number of questions/responses being finite, it may make a reasonable wikiproject. The questions remains, however: would that project have a corresponding userbox template?

I'm glad you enjoyed that! I have to admit, it gives me a little bit of pleasure to read it over again. Oh, me. – ClockworkSoul 06:20, 13 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Another Esperanzial note... edit

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.
