You may wish to view this entry in the history log of the science reference desk as it contains a good explanation of what could have caused the problem. As Shantavira later mentioned, it would be useful to know more about the specific type of clocks affected.

This useful answer was unfortunately deleted (leaving only a joke behind) because it was provided by a user who has been banned for assuming multiple identities and using them as if they were actually separate people, a practice know as sock puppetry which is not allowed on Wikipedia. This particular user, however, is a very knowledgeable electrical engineer, and the loss of their contributions is to the detriment of the reference desk. We would be much better off with his return in exchange for the departure of a handful of editors who seem to use the reference desks primarily to make jokes to show how clever they are.
