Getting Started

edit

Okay, if you'd like to start on your userpage, no problem. Just tell me what it is that you'd like done with it. Alex43223 Talk | Contribs | E-mail | C 21:38, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

    • Well, to answer your first question, that's simple. Regular links would look like [[United States]]. So, to make a link look like something else, officially called a Piped Link, it would look like: [[United States|America]]. In a nutshell, add your two brackets first, then the page you want to link to, then a break (|), then what you want it to look like. It's that simple. Now, to answer your second..... Alex43223 Talk | Contribs | E-mail | C 21:50, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
      • To line up userboxes, there are a couple of ways. The second I won't really get into, unless you want to use complicated HTML. The best way, like I did on my Userbox page, is to put {{Userboxtop}} wherever you want them to start. Then, place the templates and/or code next, and after all the boxes are in, put {{Userboxbottom}} after the last one. This will align the boxes to the right and put them all in one box. Let me give you an example:

{{Userboxtop}}{{User:Disavian/Userboxes/Not Censored}}{{user mathematician-2}}{{Userboxbottom}}

  • This would put in three userboxes, all grouped into one, which would look like the example at the right→

It's that simple. Now, what's next.........? Alex43223 Talk | Contribs | E-mail | C 22:00, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re:Alignment

edit

OK, sorry I didn't mention that part, aligning the userboxes is almost as simple as putting them up. The following are the optional parameters. All you have to do, as you can see, is copy this to change the Userboxtop template. Any you don't want to use, just leave blank after the "=" sign. See the parameters below...

{{userboxtop
| align =
| backgroundcolor =
| bordercolor =
| extra-css =
| textcolor =
| toptext =
}}

[userboxes]

{{userboxbottom}}

These are what you can add only if you want to, and the default is what they look like if the value is left blank.

Parameter Valid values
align left, center, or right (default)
backgroundcolor Any web color (name or #XXXXXX hex format). Defaults to #FFFFFF.
bordercolor Any web color (name or #XXXXXX hex format). Defaults to #99B3FF.
extra-css Allows you to provide additional CSS style information.
textcolor Any web color (name or #XXXXXX hex format). Defaults to #000000.
toptext Overrides the standard Userbox text and link. Can include wiki-markup.

Re:Indentation

edit

Okay, now for indentation. There are two basic, acceptable ways for this. The first is the colon system. The first user to post would simply post their message. Then, if another user replies, they would put a colon (:) before their message. This would continue with more and more users, adding colons (the third user would put :::, the fifth :::::, etc.) until the original poster replied, then he would start at the left indent again, by simply putting his post there, with no colon before.

  • The other acceptable way, as I'm currently using for this very paragraph, is to everything basically the same as the last way, but insead of colons, you use asterisks. Asterisks ( * ), form bullets, as you usually see on lists or disambig pages. Well, this works on talk pages too, by simply adding the number of asterisks (3=***, 5=*****, etc.) per the number of users, with the original user starting the left indent again. It's that simple. P.S. I have to go, but I'll be back on in a few hours. Feel free to leave as many messages as you want; when I get back I'll reply whether you're on or not.

Yes, I know how to make the menu bars. They're pretty simple, you'll just have to tell me what it is you want on it, and I can show you... Alex43223 Talk | Contribs | E-mail | C 21:56, 17 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Code for Menu Bars

edit

No problem. Okay, here's the code you can use for some pretty simple bars. I designed these two like you said you wanted it, but if you want to use another image, simply replace the image code. For another link, as you can see, just add another click template and link in the corresponding area. If you have problems, contact me or tell me what's next! Oh btw, you should create a subpage, such as User:Cleverdan204/Menu, then simply place {{User:Cleverdan204/Menu}} at the top of all the pages you want it on. That's it! -Alex43223 Talk | Contribs | E-mail | C 21:52, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

P.S. You can create your own sandbox, I put these links to direct to User:Cleverdan204/Sandbox. When you create it, just make sure you put a notice at the top of the page that it is YOUR sandbox, not Wikipedia's.

Popups

edit

Do you know about Wikipedia popups? Just asking, I use them and many editors do. They're a big help with a lot of things. Alex43223 Talk | Contribs | E-mail | C 21:53, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re:Popups

edit

Sorry about the wait, I've been off and on infrequently. Anyway, everyone has a .js file, which basically changes the way you view your skin. The monobook.js is the file that corresponds with the Monobook skin, which is default and I assume you're using (it can be changed at Special:Preferences). For the simplest use, just go to your file and put in the following code:
{{subst:navpop}}

Like I said, a lot of users use this tool, which can be very helpful. If you don't like the tools, that's understood, but if there's problems, don't hesitate to make contact. Alex43223 Talk | Contribs | E-mail | C 02:28, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
