David Bateman edit

It seems from your recent post to an IP user's talk page that a disambiguation page could be useful - if you want advice on setting one up feel free to leave a message on my talk page. Giles Bennett (Talk, Contribs) 20:31, 22 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguation pages edit

Hi there - that's the right place to leave me a message, yes, because as you'll have noticed a little message pops up at the top of your screen telling you when someone changes your own talk page - that's why I'm replying here.

So, disambiguation pages. Well, you can read this page on disambiguation, which should give you enough to be going on with. The whole point is that there's room for David Bateman the English poet, and David Bateman the Canadian poet, to co-exist on Wikipedia - they just can't co-exist on the same page, which is why you end up with someone over-writing your hard work (the good news is that it hasn't disappeared, though!).

First up is to make a page for David Bateman the English poet (maybe here David Bateman (English poet), and copy to it all the information that you'd carefully created from your original pages on David Bateman (look at the archived version of the page [[1]].

Next is to make a page for David Bateman the Canadian poet (maybe here David Bateman (Canadian poet) and copy to it all the information from the current version of the David Bateman page.

Then all you're left with is the issue of what happens when people go to the David Bateman page. What you want is a disambiguation page to say "If you're looking for the Canadian Poet, click here, and if you're looking for hte English poet, click here" - it's a two part process.

An example can be found at this page - chosen at random, just because it happened to be one I created a while ago. As you can see at the top, although you clicked on the page "Ezio" you are automatically redirected to a page called "Ezio (disambiguation)". That then lists the various options - in your case this is going to list the Canadian and the English David Batemans.

So the next step is to create the page David Bateman (disambiguation). You can use the Ezio page as your basis or (if you really want to cheat) you can use the one I've mocked up for you at my sandbox. That's the hard bit.

The final thing is to take care of the original David Bateman page - you want it to redirect to your brand-spanking new David Bateman (disambiguation) page. This is the easiest bit of the lot - just go to David Bateman, delete the whole lot and replace it with #REDIRECT [[David Bateman (disambiguation)]]. That way anyone going to the redirect page will automatically end up at the disambiguation page, and will find the David Bateman they want. Unless there's another poet out there from another country called David Bateman...

Hopefully that's clear, but if you've got any questions leave me a message on my talk page. Giles Bennett (Talk, Contribs) 21:00, 22 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Other things edit

I can see that you're going well with the disambiguation - well played. This is just a post to say that I'm going to put in the automatic reminder about signing comments on talk pages below - it's nice and easy to do by putting in four tildes "~" after your posts - it's just easier for everyone to keep track of who said what (although we can always find out through the page history). Signing comments edit

Hi, there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Heroes edit

I was actually watching Heroes myself, and was going to use Heroes as an example of a disambiguation page, but thought it was a bit complicated and Ezio was more straightforward. Fortunate, really, as if I'd used Heroes you'd probably have thought I really was a mind-reader!

I thought you'd got bored, so I finished off the process for you. Sorry - but at least you can see what I did and know better next time.

Anyway, best of luck. And isn't it weird how that Japanese chap who can stop time has suddenly gone from speaking no english to being able to speak perfect English when he stopped time in the tube train and appeared from the future...? I guess all will be explained in due course (unless you cheat and look ahead on Heroes (TV series)...! Giles Bennett (Talk, Contribs) 21:54, 22 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dead Good Poets Society edit

Sorry, but one more thing. I've noticed (have been looking through your contributions) that Dead Good Poets Society is technically a copyright violation of [[2]]. You need to bear in mind that Wikipedia has strict policies on copyright violations - see this page for an explanation. Although it may well be the case that you're the author of the original page, you need to make it clear if so - otherwise the original owner of the copyright could have a legitimate claim for infringement which would result in the page being removed. Another alternative would be to re-write the page to make it sufficiently different from the original so as to no longer constitute an infringement.

This isn't a telling off...just a, erm, telling! Giles Bennett (Talk, Contribs) 22:07, 22 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

If you are the creator of the work in question, then that's fine, but you need to be aware of the implications of your posting your own copywritten work on Wikipedia:Copyright - in essence you are licensing the version that you post on Wikipedia for use under the GFDL licence.

PS - Was actually watching last week's Heroes (had it recorded), and have only just watched this week's. All a bit strange, and can't work out where it's going. Resisting the temptation to look at Heroes (TV Series), though!. Giles Bennett (Talk, Contribs) 21:37, 23 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, no idea what you're talking about! I did the page for David Bateman (British poet) and my only involvement with the page for David Bateman (Canadian poet) was when he hijacked the David Bateman (British poet) and I had to do a disambiguation... guided by Giles (see above). --Clareria 21:26, 30 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for the confusion. Before User:Premeditated Chaos fixed everything with a history merge and some cleanup, it was difficult to tell who created the David Bateman (Canadian poet) article. Anyway, it's been deleted. -- Satori Son 14:50, 1 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Okay, haven't visited for a bit, but i'm really confused now. The body of the overview for David Bateman (British poet) has now vanished off the face of cyberspace - which is a shame as Liverpool is about to be European Capital of Culture and he is the reigning Poetry Slam champ! Do I just put it all in again and hope for the best or is there a reason it has been deleted? confused :-( --Clareria (talk) 19:58, 24 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
