BD2412's RFA edit

Although my RfA is not over yet, I figured that since so many people voted before it had been posted, I may as well start thanking people before it wraps up. It'll take me that long to thank everyone who voted anyway! Thank you, Christopherparham - seeing all the work you've done on the Federalist Papers has led me to respect you greatly, and your support is very meaningful to me - I'll do my best as an admin to make the reality rise to the level of the dream. Just wondering, Mr. Parham, if you've ever considered applying for adminship. I'd like to clarify that I have abandoned the transcluded sig in favor of a javascript recommended to me by Brian0918. The criticism from other users, however has not been abandoned. I was, in fact, accused of further disruption when I went about subst-ing old sigs, so I have decided to intersperse this "cleanup" activity with other edits. Or something like that. Space: The final frontier.... edit

I do not think that "Space" is not coming back until is has been completely depopulated then narrowly defined.

What is "Space"? Is it an ASCII character? Is it the volume within a sphere? Living space? Outter space? Is it what happens to people who smoke dope? Is it like a shim or a spacer? Is where spy and GPS satellites go? Is it part of Nature? Is it where sci-fi rockets go? What about about where the stars are? What about Astronomy? Cosmolopy? What about relavitity?

Even http://www.dictionary.com feels the need for ten defitions for the word. How many definitions do you think the Random House Unabridged or the OED have for it? For people who want to take the Category:Fundamental approach to the problem. Fine. Add it there and then define what it means. More flower-power to you.

I could go on and take up a lot more space (and time) with this line of thought, but I will restrain myself.

Do think I stopped at Wikipedia? Look at the Commons and all of the sister sites. I killed it real, real hard, and such a whishy-washy category name is not easily coming back. Of course, I did do not suggest that Wikinews and such cannot use the nice, terse "Space" where they might want to, but in that context, we all have better intuition about the scope in that particular content, because it is the exploration tha generates the news.

Do you really want Wikipedia:Browse to use the label "Space" for the category? Think about it: How many different ways to find "weather satellite" are our useres going to have to remember? Of course you want redundancy and a variety of schemes to browse with, but Wikipedia:Browse tends to promise that it has things ORGANZIED, in a sort-of HIERARCHY with minimally-overlapping subject areas because somebody THOUGHT about it. -- Fplay 15:27, 21 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

BTW: Most people do not really understand by Skylab and Mir fell down because they do not spend a lot of time thinking about low-earth orbit and it implications. We could split hairs and say that we have already explored space at least to Geosynchronous hieghts, so the ISS not is about "Space exploration". But most people would find the argument boring. They give the NASA activities a pass. But, in their minds, they understand that the weather satellites are about Earth Science. That is just the way people think and it is best to just organize things after having anticipated that. ISS and even Tier One is exciting and about "Exploration" and weather satellites are boring. HST is exciting because it give pretty pictures. Even the Spitzer Space Telescope is just so-of interesting. Having worked at stsci.edu for a few years (and having seen the Challenger about 60 seconds after it exploded), I think I understand the issues on this one. Hey! Check out how I renamed STS-51-L to name people will REMEMBER. And that opening section. And Columbia. I did that. -- Fplay 15:47, 21 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Oh. And why not just call that current "Space" category "Space Applications". Then we can give a the category "Space" to the Category:Funddamental crowd. Fundamental is a fun way to organize things. I might visit there when I want to playfully browse. But if I want to work, or find a specific thing, then I need categories that are better thought-out. -- Fplay 15:53, 21 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals edit

On Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, you said that you don't find Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals useful. May I ask what it is you don't find useful about it? I'm asking this because we can always do with feedback and suggestions. Aecis praatpaal 16:05, 22 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

  • Thanks for the explanation. One minor point though. The 60-stub minimum is not a strict threshold. The thought behind it is that stub templates/categories shouldn't be created for every brainfart, but only when there are a reasonable amount of articles that would use the template. The number of 60 stub articles is more of an indication of what constitutes a reasonable amount of articles than a strict minimum. It's not like categories with 58 or 59 articles won't be approved. But thank you very much for the input. I'll see what we can do with it. Aecis praatpaal 00:23, 23 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Transparent deletion edit

I have undeleted Pussy City Pimps. I am quite sympathetic to the concern that only admins are able to see the content- I think this is wrong. I know of other that think that "transparent deletion" would be a good thing to implement. Are you interested in talking about this idea? (By "transparent deletion", I mean deletion done in a way that would still allow editors to see the deleted content.) I've been kicking around the idea of making Wikipedia:Transparent deletion and also posting about it on Wikipedia talk:Deletion reform. Friday (talk) 01:24, 8 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the response. The idea is, things like attacks, personal information, or copyvios WOULD definitely be "hard-deleted", same as now. However, content for which there was no compelling reason to hide it would be transparently deleted. I know, folks are willing to undelete, but maybe you noticed, this thing was deleted AGAIN after I undeleted it. I just figure, sure, we have admins willing to respond to undelete requests, but why bother? It's quicker and simpler for all if this is not neccessary. Maybe it's because I've been hanging out on WP:DRV, but I see people frequently wanting to at see deleted content. The software change is thought to be trivially easy - we already HAVE page history. Only difference would be there would be some way of indicating transparent deletion (either blanking the article or maybe checking a box on the deletion screen). It can even be done right now today, with no software changes at all, just by using a template, but this approach has a couple slight disadvantages over an actual software change. From where I sit, it seems like this simple idea would remove a lot of the controversy surrounding deletions, and giving people fewer things to argue about HAS to be a good thing. Jew haters like yourself edit

The authors are obviously Jew haters, and are using Wikopedia as a weapon to both slander Jack Abramoff and by inference all other Jews. Why else would you have to write about his Jewish upbringing or his friend in the ultra orthodox city of Bietar Illit. Most educated antisemitic vermin like yourselves realize that you can't spill forth your venom by claiming that the Jews own the media and banks so you do it with subtleties like mentioning how he changes his "Yarmulke" at will in order to fool his clients. Or refer to him as a "SUPER ZIONIST using references from articles by other antisemites as if having been printed lends legitimacy to your slander.
