Image of Canadian PR Card

Hi. You uploaded the image of a Canada Permanent Resident Card to WP [1]. I suspect this must be your PR card or you would have had to seek permission from the person who's card it is to uploaded it. Anyway, are you sure you want to display the card image with the full name, date of birth and signature clearly visible? May I recommend uploading a new image with personal details blanked out, as is common for such documents uploaded to WP.

re U-Pass etc

Honorific prefixes

Hi, I noticed that you've been adding prefixes to some biographic articles (i.e. Michaelle Jean, Iona Campagnolo. The Manual of Style states that such titles should not be mentioned in the text inline, but can be discussed elsewhere. I don't particularly agree, but I don't think it's going to change anytime. I just thought I might let you know.

Very Sorry. I wasn't familiar with the styles of a Canadian lieutenant-governor, and I thought that "Her Honour The Honourable" came from a copy-and-paste mistake or a needless duplicity for a member of the Canadian Privy Council. Hey,

Yeah, I do realize that passports are always the property of Her Majesty, but by that same token the photo should be able to be posted under Crown Copyright, as it is held in Right of Her Majesty. This differs from many of the other federal content/photographs, which are held by the Government of Canada and therefore have different reproduction rights.

Monarchy in Canada

It seems to me that instead of saying "the Governor General and Lieutenant Governors", it's more succinct to say "the Governors General and Lieutenant." Why repeat the word Governor twice? --G2bambino 19:10, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

I understand that the official title is "Lieutenant Governor of ...." However, all eleven vice-regals are governors (ie. they govern), of which there are two types: general and lieutenant (one that governs generally and ten lieutenants to govern below him/her). Hence: the Governors General and Lieutenant. In fact, now that I think about it, the words should probably not be capitalized, and the instead should read "the governors general and lieutenant." --G2bambino 19:26, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

I apologize, but, while saying "Most of the Queen's domestic duties are performed by the Governor General and Lieutenant Governors" is accurate, I fail to see how the sentence "Most of the Queen's domestic duties are performed by the governors, both general and lieutenant" is either incorrect, or even confusing. It is aready explained in length that the Monarch is represented by a Governor General at the federal level and Lieutenant Govenrors at the provincial level. As well, the article is already long enough. But, if you feel so stongly that it needs to be repeated yet another time, and it seems you do as you've already changed it, then so be it. However, there really is no need to explain again that the Commissioners are not vice-regals. --G2bambino 19:54, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

I don't want to nit-pick on this too much, but I think you're a little confused about the role of the Canadian governors and their titles. The governors in Canada are called governors because, well, they govern. One is a governor general because he/she governs the country over all, ie. generally. As the Constitution Act states, the Governor General is the "Chief Executive Officer... carrying on the Government of Canada on behalf and in the Name of the Queen." The provincial governors are subordinate to the federal governor, and thus are called his/her lieutenants. Neither has anything to do with military ranks. The nature of the offices inspires their titles, not the other way around.

The Canadian governor general did indeed exercise executive power after 1867, as did the lieutenant governors. That usage of the reserve and constitutional powers has diminished, but the powers remain, meaning the governors continue to govern, making them not simply ceremonial bodies.

As per the GG being Commander-in-Chief: the Constitution also states that it is the Queen who has command in chief over the Canadian Armed Forces. The Governor General, through the 1901 Militia Act, performs the functions of this position as the Sovereign's representative. Thus, the office of Commander-in-Chief is shared between the Queen and her vice-regal, and is accorded to them through law, not merely as a ceremonial function. Of course, due to the principals of constitutional monarchy, neither person will exercise their powers as C-in-C without the advice of their ministers, but the principal remains the same.

The Lieutenant Governors are appointed by the Governor General, not the Sovereign (as Australian state Governors are). They cannot defer any reserved provincial bills to the Monarch, but only to the GG, who may then defer them to the Queen. Ergo, though they are the representatives of the Queen in Right of their respective province, they remain subordinate to the Governor General. Granted, this relationship between the vice-regals is ever-evolving.
Further, the 1947 Letters Patent allowed the Governor General to exercise the powers of the sovereign, but explicitly do not "transfer" the powers to the GG. They say "We do hereby authorize and empower Our Governor General... to exercise all powers and authorities lawfully belonging to Us in respect of Canada." The powers... lawfully belonging to us part is what's important here. Therefore, the Sovereign remains C-in-C by the Constitution, while the GG has been allowed to fulfill the functions of said office, and hold the title, by both the Letters Patent and the Milita Act.
I'm interested, though, in where you see that the Queen can no longer declare war. The link to the Emergencies Act 1985 that you provided did not give me the Act, and a read through it here revealed nothing that revokes her power to do so. It seems to merely deal with the Governor General (note, referred to as the "Governor in Council", not "Governor General in Council") and how he/she declares a "war emergency," which, it seems, wouldn't arise unless war itself had been declared. --G2bambino 23:01, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

That's interesting information, thanks. I won't debate you on the issue of who is authorised to declare war (though, unless I'm really missing something, I see a "war emergency" as different to war itself), but I still maintain that the 1947 letters patent did not strip the Sovereign of any powers - nothing in them says that any part of the Constitution Act is repealed, and explicitly state that the powers belonging to the Sovereign continue to belong to them. Thus, that, plus the fact that members of the Armed Forces continue to swear allegiance to the Queen, and not the GG, and that the Queen is still vested with all executive authority in and over Canada, would mean that she continues to be C-in-C of the forces, despite having the GG act, and be titled, as such in her place. --G2bambino 15:54, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Sam Sullivan

"His worship" is an honorific prefix, not a title, and should not be used in the caption. The title that comes with the Mayor's Office is "Mayor," as in "Mayor Sam Sullivan. The source you provided clearly states that "His Worship" is a "style of address"; the honorific article states that "English honorifics are usually limited to formal situations" and notes that they are only incorrectly mistaken with titles; the Your worship article states that it is used "in spoken address"; and the Style (manner of address) article specifies that it is an "oral address." According to the Wikipedia:Manual of Style, honorifics "should not be included in the text inline but may be legitimately discussed in the article proper," and since your addition, it is discussed in the article. Other relevant conventions on Wikipedia are to use the most commonly associated name for the subject, and to accept a person's self-identification. The context of those are arguably somewhat different (i.e., article titles and personal identity), but they do embody a principle; I've met Sullivan and follow Vancouver city politics, and can't imagine him ever insisting, or even asking, to be referred to as something so hoity-toity. The city's website does not use "His worship," but rather Mayor Sam Sullivan, as does his official website. As for other articles that use honorific prefixes, many, if not most, don't. In any case, how other articles do something is not conclusive evidence that it is correct, but as far as that goes, the relevant comparison is not elected officials at other levels of government, but other Mayors of major Canadian cities, none of which use "His Worship." You are probably right. I was actually just watching the Hong Kong 10-year ceremonies, and thought I'd change it to suit what is done in practice. UBCO vs UBC O

I think that point is that UBCO is the commonly use abbreviation. The administration has specific wishes on that point indeed, but the public have not embraced them. I don't think that Wikipedia's mandate extends to supporting one agenda over the other. As for examples of common usage, see:

A few things:

1. The image you uploaded Image:CoatofArms new.jpg is redundant to Image:SFU-Crest.png. If this crest is indeed "new", you could replace or nominate a replacement for that file.
2. You uploaded the image in JPEG format, when it should probably be in PNG format with transparency for the background; see {{BadJPEG}} or {{ShouldBePNG}} for some details.
3. Your image lacks a source, and I highly doubt it is a "Public domain image".

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Re: UBC/SFU Coats of Arms

Hi,
I apologize if my tone was taken as being rude (this wasn't my intent, but is a common perception with text-based communication and nasty deletion templates). Really what I'm trying to get at is a listing of sources (i.e., URLs) to verify credibility, and possibly improve the quality of graphics, etc. (you can probably tell already I'm no fan of JPEGs for this purpose—I try to track down a PDF or other vector format and reproduce a quality graphic if I can). Thanks for your detailed explanations about CoAs, as I was unaware that they can be legally considered PD images. I had assumed that these materials were inheritently covered by copyright, as explained in this common template {{Non-free symbol}}. Your wording just appeared suspiciously similar to images uploaded by users whom claim to have made images and "released" it to the PD, even though they just found it and wanted to pass it through. Rather than this rational, I think all you really need are:

1. {{logo}} for the licensing rational (other rational I don't think are necessary for Wikipedia); and
2. (most importantly) a URL to the source image, or other information on how you created the image (this is why I tagged them with {{Di-no source}}, since I had no clue where you had obtained/uploaded these images).

UBC

I've kept you additions to the article, except that I have converted your reference regarding the UBC CoA to a proper reference (using <ref>{{cite web}}</ref>), and moved your addition down in the "History" section (and I've even tagged it as a {{Sectstub}}, so it can be expanded). If you can, provide a source URL where this image is from

SFU

I did notice little differences, but I had no clue where you had obtained this crest image and information, which should be provided on the image page.

Again, my intentions were not to delete/remove these (despite using a deletion-style template), but to include the sources so that they could be improved (graphics and/or info). Regarding the edits to the UBC/SFU articles: I restored the common logos to the top, since they are more common and identifiable (the CoAs are not); furthermore, the CoAs have (or potentially have) encyclopedic content, and it is convenient to show the CoA and text side-by-side. +mt 07:09, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Metro Vancouver water

Your ref is correct except that it is actually the GVWD (water district) that doesn't flouridate water, this doesn't include all areas of Metro Van. Also, why is it "interesting"? Is there a more correct and neutral way to word this? Cheers, Franamax (talk) 09:24, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

As images of living individuals, it is possible to find an existing image or create a new one which is available under a free use licence or which is in the public domain, therefore these non-free images fail the first non-free content criterion.
