RGSAO

Regarding your message about RGSAO which I have just seen, I would like to make a few points of information. Firstly, the Alice Ottley School did used to be a charity as can bee seen on the Charity Commission website [1]. On this topic of charities, charitable status is not renewed on a yearly basis and new charities are formed only when new charities are created or changed! (see the Charity Commission website for further details). These are merely facts which I wish to bring to your attention and do not represent any of my personal views regarding any articles on Wikipedia. Regarding the old pupils association, there is no visible link to the AO Old Girls page on the RGSAO web-page as you claim. If the website has not been updated the information on there should nevertheless be considered correct and representative of the views of the school. Otherwise one would be dealing with speculation, which as you rightly say is not recommended by Wikipedia. I still have an issue with the supposed name of the school. Since you admit people do call the school RGS Worcester (albeit out of potential ignorance) this should still be made clear on the website. I feel many of your points are far too subjective for Wikipedia articles, but objectivity will come with research experience. At the Cambridge OE dinner the headmaster made it clear that people locally and within the school would refer to it as 'RGS Worcester' (this may be checked with any of the teachers who attended that dinner). I am sure this last point will remain contentious, but I wish to make it clear that Wikipedia does not tolerate one sided views in articles. The way I have mine set up is explained here - User:Werdnabot/Archiver/Howto (though Werdna isn't the one running the bot anymore, and its configuration system is showing its age) - there is also a more recently made bot that I've never bothered to switch to, that is explained at User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo and may be a better option (looks like it's more flexible, and does stuff like switch over to a new archive automatically) —Random832 23:11, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Hello Btline, I take your point that there is a perfectly good source for The Royal Grammar School article but as a pupil of this school I can tell you that the wikipedia page isn't true (If you read the page and the edit I made, no body calls it RGSAO) Therefore I edited the page.

How can I ensure that this will not be flagged up again and therefore not have to go through this stage again?

A fair use image should only really be used to illustrate the subject of the article it is placed on. Thus, Image:Class_172.jpg is OK for the British Rail Class 172 article, as it shows what a Class 172 will look like. It doesn't, however, show anything specific to London Midland (or to Chiltern Railways); if it was in their livery, it might be acceptable, but it isn't. As for the other images, as the pictures are of different (albeit similar) types of unit from those they were illustrating, that could be seen as misleading. Hello. I see you think I've vandalised this article by removing the deletion template and the disambiguation note. Please take note of the following:

1. The rule on proposed deletions says I am permitted to remove such a notice, provided I give a reason. I gave a reason – a few minutes of Googling told me that this band existed and was covered in some heavy metal-oriented sources.
2. The rule on contested deletions says that once a notice is removed, it should not be restored.
3. This guideline on disambiguation advises not to add a "hatnote" when a name is not ambiguous.

In other words, I have not vandalised the article, but tried to follow Wikipedia's rules.

Firstly, you are allowed to remove such notices only, and I mean only, when not only you have given a reason, but have validated it with sources etc. Therefore, you were not following Wiki policy, and I was perfectly allowed to re-add the template. Just to let you know, on the News at Ten page, it was me who added the piece on the possible axing of NaT. This was sourced from the Express. Not one other major media source has ran this story. It seems very unlikely that News at Ten is going anywhere at the moment. As for the late news, Radio Times, The Sun's TV Guide and itv.com are just a few of the TV listings still billing ITV's late Friday night news as The Late News. As we aren't going to agree, I suggest we rename the article as ITV Late News, as that is most likely the name now used among insiders.

The situation is this. Whoever filmed the video (i.e. the person who stood on the platform with their camera) is the owner of the copyright. It's that simple. Just because they then decided to upload it to YouTube doesn't change that. Now, if I take a photograph of something and upload it to Wikipedia (or to the Wikimedia Commons, e.g. [6]), then in order to comply with the rules, I effectively relinquish my ownership of the image and it becomes "free". (Specifically, I licence it under the GFDL.) However, YouTube doesn't have such a requirement on its contributors, and has a much more lenient approach to copyright issues (basically, as they are owned by a very rich corporation, they can afford good lawyers!). As a result, you don't have the legal rights to something you find on YouTube, whether it's a Hollywood feature film, and old episode of a BBC comedy, an old ITV logo, or some video of a train that someone took with a digital camcorder, so you can't upload it to Wikipedia. You a probably right when you say that the original taker will not mind, as they put the photo on YouTube, but unless you have their explicit permission (or they have licenced it appropriately), you still can't upload it.

Wikipedia does, however, allow non-free images but only under circumstances when a free replacement is impossible to obtain (for instance, a photograph of a historical event). As Adambro has explained, as it is perfectly possible for someone (whether that be you or somebody else) to go down to your local railway station and take a photograph. As the new livery becomes more widespread, this will become easier. You just have to be patient! --RFBailey (talk) 17:51, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Firstly, I don't think that's a good idea becasue it looks all the railway stop articles are titled "......railway station." But its an unfamiliar subject to me, so I won't get to involved. In regarding to moving a page (which is what you want to do), usually all you have to do is use the "move" tab at the top of the page (for more info, see Help:Merging and moving pages). But if the page that you want to move is already a redirect, then usually you won't be able to move it unless you're an administrater. I'm not an admistrater, so I can't help you with that. But you can ask any admistrater that you know, and see what they say. Alternativly, you post the request here: Wikipedia:Requested moves, but that takes a while. Thanks for your post. I've only later noticed what you mean by the 'scientific notation' on the inches. think the template must be broken as it wasn't doing that before. Hopefully it'll get fixed soon. As for the image, it was a good image - and of a size that would work in the body of the article, but was the wrong size for the infobox. Cheers. Hello, again! You didn't create the page on Commons but created the page on Wikipedia. An image on Commons can be seen in all Wikipedia's languages. So, if the Wikipedia don't have a image, on that page is displayed the image page of Commons, and just by editing the Wikipedia's page if nobody had edited the same page on Wikipedia, it will be created and the first editor the creator. Just for the record, that's incorrect and based on a misunderstanding. Btline, you didn't create the page - it's simply because of the "hole" in history that occurs when moving things between various wiki's. Regardless, the person who requests a page deleted should always inform the person who uploaded/authored it, not some random person who commented on it. In this case [7] for example, the person who should have been informed by Sdrtirs is Loganberry (or alternatively his account on commons). Rabo3 (talk) 19:49, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Regarding this comment. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing what you added below the file, considering that the original presumably is gone, and only the Commons remains (with the file that appears on English wiki simply being a hotlink to the Commons). A vague memory tells me that a few wiki admin's can see pages that have been deleted, but it isn't something I've ever had to use, and therefore haven't spend any amount of time actually finding out how it works (a place to start might be reading through WP:Undeletion to see if there's anything useful). Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

Island Line Trains and templates

Hi,

You undid my recent edit to this article, with the edit summary "please do not collapse templates". May I ask why this is? All the templates on the page are relevant and only the {{tl|Transportation on the Isle of Wight)) one could possibly be removed (and that's debatable). It's not that I don't like the TOC templates, but they take up an awful lot of vertical space. Surely Wikipedia:Avoid template creep would suggest collapsing templates other than the core one is sensible... --Peeky44 (talk) 20:00, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Firstly, I did not undo the whole edit. Concerning the templates, the TOC ones are the main ones on this article- esp due to the history of the various TOCs. All other such pages do not have the templates hidden. As it is only a small page, the templates are not such a big problem. That is why I changed your edit. Apologies, the word 'undid' was inappropriate. Personally, I would have thought the danger of templates becoming overwhelming is a bigger problem on smaller pages such as this, rather than (for example) Gatwick Express.
