Welcome to the Wikipedia! edit

Hello, and Welcome to the Wikipedia, Bobo12345! Thanks for the contributions over on the Minamata disease article. Here are a few perfunctory tips to hasten your acculturation into the Wikipedia experience:

And some odds and ends: Cite your sources, Civility, Conflict resolution, How to edit a page, How to write a great article, Pages needing attention, Peer review, Policy Library, Verifiability, Village pump, and Wikiquette; also, you can sign your name on any page by typing four tildes: Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:22, 20 October 2016 (UTC). Best of luck, Bobo12345, and most importantly, have fun! Ombudsman 05:54, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image:Minamata Chisso Industrial Waste.jpg edit

Perhaps leaving a request for assistance at the Village pump might be the fastest way to get help from editors more experienced with handling image copyrights. Judging from your comments, it seems likely that you might find more specifics about the copyright status at the website where you found the image; that could also speed the process. Good luck! Ombudsman 23:06, 9 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I dunno, but it's probably not a good idea edit

It looks like as if that site DOES NOT have the direct rights from a lot of those photographers for the use of their images. Therefore, copying anything from that site is dangerous from a legal perspective unless you can prove that the work is so old it is in the public domain. But very few works are in the public domain; they have to be created before 1923 or 1924, I think.

Fair use might be possible but I really doubt it. You'd have to use a small portion of the work (for example, a tiny corner might suffice), or resample it at a very small size until it's barely recognizable, etc. Fair use is usually very difficult to get away with; the exception is parodies, which are protected under fair use thanks to Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc..

The point is that no one can just go around licensing stuff which they themselves do not hold the license for. It's like that old joke about the guy who asks you if you'd like to buy the Brooklyn Bridge. --Coolcaesar 20:09, 10 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Two reasons, one of them misplaced edit

First, it looked like a cut&paste. Second was that axe murder junk is being used by the Colbert Report vandals. The revert was probably badly placed though and the colbert vandals have been distracting me. As for moves though, the GFDL requires that all edits be attributed. Axe_Murder_Incident looks like a slight rewording for a changed title, except Operation_Paul_Bunyan has a long edit history which should be preserved for the GFDL. Here's what I propose you do. Go to Axe Murder Incident, tag it with db-author, but copy your text to a private place for safekeeping. An administrator will be along shortly to delete the article. Then, go to Operation Paul Bunyan and click the move tab, just to the right of the history tab. Enter a the axe murder name in and move the page(check the talk page move too). From there, open the editing of the article again, and paste in your new naming scheme. In this way, you will have moved and renamed the article, but given it a new name while still preserving the GFDL. Let me know what you think of this. Kevin_b_er 06:04, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Links to redirects edit

Hi, I see you've been replacing links to Operation Paul Bunyan with links that read Operation Paul Bunyan. Please don't do that, as it's unnecessary and it complicates both the source code and the logical structure of the affected articles. For details, see Wikipedia:Redirect#Don't fix links to redirects that aren't broken. Melchoir 17:09, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

link to British edit

Hello, when you want to link to the article about something British, please do not link to British, as that is a disambiguation page (which nothing should be linked to). Instead link to the one of the options found on that page such as United Kingdom or Great Britain by writing out British or British. Re Macrons and the Infobox Prefecture Japan template edit

Hi Bobo12345,

...Any way of doctoring [Infobox Prefecture Japan] so that we can get rid of [] and get it to point to ?

Hmm... In other words, if I've understood correctly, for the template to "de-macroniz/se" names automatically...?  If so, I'm afraid I don't know, although I suspect that if it is possible, the code might be cumbersome...

A solution that would seem to work with rather than despite macrons would be to permit them in category names, to which those versions without macrons are categoryredirected...?

Sorry not to be more helpful, David Kernow (talk) 11:56, 3 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've fixed this (there was an existing DistrictCategory parameter). -- Rick Block (talk) 14:21, 3 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Seconded – thanks Rick!  David Kernow (talk) 21:30, 3 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Just a question, but why not move the category to Category:Districts in Ōita Prefecture (and, all of the other Ōita-related categories)? WP:MOS-JA only mentions that items in categories should be sorted as if it had no macrons, but I don't see any place which prohibits the changing of category names to meet the standards for the rest of the articles. Neier 23:19, 3 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ah, so it does. It seems I misinterpreted the MOS. I'll go ahead and rename the categories as needed. Bobo12345 06:49, 4 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of various redirects edit

Hi Bobo12345,

You proposed deletion of various redirects. They probably should be deleted, but Wikipedia:Proposed deletion states, "Items other than articles, including images, templates, Wikipedia essays and redirects are dealt with through other processes." A good place to list them is Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion. They appear noncontroversial and can probably be deleted without any problems.

Thanks for suggesting deleting them.

Fg2 08:05, 4 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for letting me know my mistake. It can be pretty confusing sometimes when there are so many different procedures for deleting/renaming/moving! I've relisted all those redirects for deletiong on the WP:RFD page as you suggested. Bobo12345 08:32, 4 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Honshu and Kyushu edit

I just found out that Honshu and Kyushu are English words!

Both appear in Merriam-Webster! See [1] and [2]

Therefore I strongly oppose macronization for those two. WhisperToMe 03:43, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Kyushu and Kyūshū are the same word, although probably only the unmacronised version appears in the dictionary, as you pointed out. The issue is whether or not to use the macronised version on Wikipedia. The WP:MOS-JP indicates that for very common Japanese words, the unmacronised version should be used (eg. Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto) but for less common words, the macronised version should be used to aide pronunciation (eg. Tesshō Genda, Ōita Prefecture). Note that you will also find Oita in the MW dictionary. The survey over at the MOS page is more about where to draw the line between common and non-common. Bobo12345 05:25, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
From what I can tell, news articles, municipal websites, and informal publications tend to omit macrons, while maps and formal encyclopedias keep macrons. EDIT: Brittanica does not use macrons for Kyushu, while Encarta uses macrons. WhisperToMe 05:33, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Unintended consequence? I see you've macronized these words in some U.S. Navy ship articles, and I'm sure there are many good reasons for doing so. But I can no longer find these words in an article when I enter "Kyushu" or "Honshu" in the search box on my browser. (And, no, I'm not ever going to enter the macronized versions--too much trouble, don't know any Japanese, too hard to keep up with places that macronize and don't macronize, etc.) Lou Sander 15:35, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
When you say the "search box on my browser" do you mean a search function of your browser, or a website search engine like Google? Bobo12345 01:11, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
On 7 October, 2006, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Tomoko Uemura in Her Bath, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Copyright violation? edit

Is the "release" provided by User:Dshallard on Osu-Kannon's talk page really satisfactory to prove that permission has been obtained? Bobo12345 12:19, 9 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure. I've never dealt with released copyrighted text before (just spotting apparent copyright infringements and tagging them as such), so I'm not certain of the procedure and how claims get verified (I was planning to deal with this properly a bit later anyway). Do you think it should be taken to Copyright Problems for a week instead of just db-copyvio, or what? ~Matticus TC 15:34, 9 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

AWB edit

I think I read somewhere that you used AWB to update many of the Ōita articles? Did you also use it to move the towns/cities to their new names? Neier 13:03, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes. After doing the Ōita Prefecture and Ōita, Ōita pages by hand and realising what a painful process it was, I got authorised to use AutoWikiBrowser. I moved all of the pages over manually but the used the AWB to convert all of the links to the macroned versions. It was still a long process. Do you use AWB? If not, I suggest you get signed up! It will make the job of converting much easier. Bobo12345 13:07, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

JET Programme wiki edit

Hey! As I recall, someone once tried to do something similar. He was a BigDaikon poster too.

Here it is:

http://www.takipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

If you want to do it, then that's cool. Probably not something I would really want to contribute too, just because allthough it is my job, I'm not really interested in the JET programme on the whole...

But let me know how it goes!

MightyAtom 12:38, 16 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Agreed, good idea, but it may be hard to find contributors. I think Ithinkimlost (.org? .com?) has a wiki set up, by the way, so you might just want to piggy back onto that one. Good luck! -- BrianSmithson 06:23, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

WikiJET edit

Hi there! I think the idea of a JET-related Wiki is a good one, especially if a) you can get a wide range of people to contribute and b) it doesn't turn into a forum for slagging off JET and Japan (a lot of people I know are turned off by Big Daikon because they feel it falls into the latter category). I just had a look at what you have so far and there are some good ideas there. A place for people to put lesson activities/plans/ideas is always good, as would be links to pages of interest to JET participants (Hyperdia, Weather information, Yahoo groups, etc) and also guides to cities and places of interest.

In my second year I was a Regional Prefectural Advisor (because Gifu prefecture is so huge, it's very difficult for the PAs to cover the whole of it, so it is split into five areas and each area has two RPAs who report back to the PA), and at our monthly meetings we decided to make a website called GifuGuide, featuring information for JETs (and other gaijin) in the area, information for people who may be visiting, and things like that. The three or so Wikipedia-savvy people at the meeting said that starting a Wiki would be the best thing, but as we were a minority that idea was scrapped in favour of getting all the JETs in the area to contribute articles. So I think there'll definitely be interest from the JET community. Off the top of my head if you want to pursue this further and if you haven't already done so, talk to one of the AJET representatives in your area and see if they can get it in the monthly AJET bulletin; that should get a lot of people involved, for sure.

Unfortunately, since I left the bubble of Japan I haven't had as much time to spend on Wikipedia (in my last few months on JET my classes had been reduced to two per week; I think I was one of the most underused ALTs ever, hence my prolific Wikipedia input!), but if I have time I'd see if there's anything I could add to the site. Hope that's okay! Phileas 18:13, 16 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the welcome message, but I was logged out in error at the time I submitted changes to the entry. I still signed it with my wiki username though. Ryukyu Islands edit

Ryukyu Islands should remain de-macronised according to WP:MOS-JA. It is not the same as Ryūkyū Shotō, according to the what is already explained in the Ryukyu Islands article. These are explained in the two articles, please read them. —Tokek 03:34, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. The WP:MOS-JA states in rule no. 10: "Island names should always include macrons". Bobo12345 04:01, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Indeed, it's sometimes hard to keep track of macron policy as it tends to change constantly. Whehter or not macrons should be included, Ryukyu Islands is defined in English-language dictionaries as the set of islands between Taiwan and Kyushu. This definition corresponds to the Japanese term Nansei Shotō. The set of islands is further subdivided into Satsunan Shotō and Ryūkyū Shotō. Hence Ryūkyū Shotō is a subset of Ryukyu Islands (a.k.a. Nansei Shotō), not the equivalent. The two terms should not be equated when they do not share the same definition. —Tokek 08:21, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, please feel free to make the changes you see necessary. I'm not an expert on the Ryukyu Islands myself, or the terminology. Bobo12345 09:00, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image:Tazeen Ahmad.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Tazeen Ahmad.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add Replaceable fair use disputed, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Chowbok 23:08, 12 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Poll: "Ryūkyū" instead of "Ryukyu" edit

Hello, Bobo12345. I noticed that you've previously voted in Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles)/Prefectures and macrons. A similar poll on macrons is taking place until Dec. 13 at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles)#Poll: "Ryūkyū" instead of "Ryukyu". The voting seems to be deadlocked, with many outside voters rather than frequent contributors to the WP:JP project like yourself. It would really help if you can either comment or vote there, although I'll understand if you would prefer to stay out of the controversy. Thank you for your consideration.

Kiyokawa, Kanagawa edit

You reintroduced a dablink on top of Kiyokawa, Kanagawa that points to Kiyokawa, Ōita. Why? —Tokek 12:05, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

My apologies. I was under the impression that the a search for "Kiyokawa" forwarded straight to the Kiyokawa, Kanagawa article, but since there is already a disambiguation page, then the dablink is not really needed, is it? I've changed it back. Bobo12345 23:19, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Minamata fishing.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Minamata fishing.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 17:36, 2 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use Image:Masazumi_Harada.jpg edit

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Masazumi_Harada.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 21:49, 29 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Minamata Chisso Industrial Waste.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Minamata Chisso Industrial Waste.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:17, 12 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Questionnaire edit

In an effort to assess the progress of Wikiproject Cheshire, it has been decided to send a questionnaire to members. To answer, please copy this questionnaire and paste your answers on the answer page. While participation is, of course, not compulsory, thoughtful answers will help the project to develop and improve. Thank you.

1. The project is always looking for new members, so we want to find out which ways of attracting and approaching potential members work best. Do you remember how and why you joined?
Answer:
2. How would you describe your involvement in the project? What activities do you undertake and how often do you edit Cheshire-related article?
Answer:
3. Do you feel like you receive adequate support/contact from project members?
Answer:
4. The project talk page is intended to be the hub of the project, where members discuss articles and help each other improving them. Until very recently it has been almost inactive, but do you check the project talk page?
Answer:
4a. If the talk page was more active, would you get involved in discussions there?
Answer:
5. When viewing Cheshire-related articles, are there any issues that have stood out as needing attention or frustrated you? (Traditional counties POV, poor coverage about a particular subject, vandalism going unnoticed etc)
Answer:
6. Maintaining the Cheshire portal is one of the Cheshire WikiProject's main aims, providing a display of the best and most up to date articles that are part of the project. There is currently a drive to promote it to featured status, but input from a wide range of members is needed. Do you have the portal on your watchlist?
Answer:
7. Would you be interesting in subscribing to a newsletter covering North West England, with details of work done by WikiProjects representing Cheshire, Greater Manchester, and Merseyside?
Answer:
8. Finally, are there any improvements or initiatives you'd like to see WP:CHES undertake, or general comments you'd like to make?

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite edit

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:22, 20 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Possible removal of AWB access due to inactivity edit

Hello! There is currently a request for approval of a bot to manage the AutoWikiBrowser CheckPage by removing inactive users, among other tasks. You are being contacted because you may qualify as an inactive user of AWB. First, if you have any input on the proposed bot task, please feel free to comment at the BRFA. Should the bot task be approved, your access to AWB may be uncontroversially removed if you do not resume editing within a week's time. This is purely for routine maintenance of the CheckPage, and is not indicative of wrongdoing on your part. You will be able regain access at any time by simply requesting it at WP:PERM/AWB. Minamata disease Bobo12345, are you, or do you know, Shabnum Nami? edit

 • Bobo12345, I hope that you are the same person as Professor Shabnum Nami, but if not, I was stunned to see that Nami's 2014 chapter on Minamata disease, Toxic Effects of Mercury, is word-for-word identical to what you had written eight years earlier on Wikipedia. [3]. I don't see any indication that of an edition of the book earlier than 2014, nor a statement that it's reprinted from a previous article that Nami had written, but he mentions Wikipedia only as the source of his illustrations. It's clear that your work came first; if he and you are not the same person, then it would be fair to say that you are the victim of plagiarism. Mandsford 19:48, 20 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mandsford. As you can see from the long interval I'm not a regular editor of Wikipedia any longer due to other commitments but thanks for informing me of this. No I am not Shabnum Nami, so I can only assume that they have taken "heavy inspiration", shall we say, from the Minamata disease Wikipedia article which I helped to write...
