Perhaps leaving a request for assistance at the Village pump might be the fastest way to get help from editors more experienced with handling image copyrights. Judging from your comments, it seems likely that you might find more specifics about the copyright status at the website where you found the image; that could also speed the process. Good luck! I dunno, but it's probably not a good idea

It looks like as if that site DOES NOT have the direct rights from a lot of those photographers for the use of their images. Therefore, copying anything from that site is dangerous from a legal perspective unless you can prove that the work is so old it is in the public domain. But very few works are in the public domain; they have to be created before 1923 or 1924, I think.

Fair use might be possible but I really doubt it. You'd have to use a small portion of the work (for example, a tiny corner might suffice), or resample it at a very small size until it's barely recognizable, etc. Fair use is usually very difficult to get away with; the exception is parodies, which are protected under fair use thanks to Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc..

The point is that no one can just go around licensing stuff which they themselves do not hold the license for. It's like that old joke about the guy who asks you if you'd like to buy the Brooklyn Bridge. --Coolcaesar 20:09, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Two reasons, one of them misplaced

First, it looked like a cut&paste. Second was that axe murder junk is being used by the Colbert Report vandals. The revert was probably badly placed though and the colbert vandals have been distracting me. As for moves though, the GFDL requires that all edits be attributed. Axe_Murder_Incident looks like a slight rewording for a changed title, except Operation_Paul_Bunyan has a long edit history which should be preserved for the GFDL. Here's what I propose you do. Go to Axe Murder Incident, tag it with {{db-author}}, but copy your text to a private place for safekeeping. An administrator will be along shortly to delete the article. Then, go to Operation Paul Bunyan and click the move tab, just to the right of the history tab. Enter a the axe murder name in and move the page(check the talk page move too). From there, open the editing of the article again, and paste in your new naming scheme. In this way, you will have moved and renamed the article, but given it a new name while still preserving the GFDL. Let me know what you think of this. Kevin_b_er 06:04, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Please don't do that, as it's unnecessary and it complicates both the source code and the logical structure of the affected articles. Hello, when you want to link to the article about something British, please do not link to British, as that is a disambiguation page (which nothing should be linked to). Instead link to the one of the options found on that page such as United Kingdom or Great Britain by writing out [[United Kingdom|British]] or [[Great Britain|British]]. Re Macrons and the Infobox Prefecture Japan template

Hi Bobo12345,

...Any way of doctoring [{{Infobox Prefecture Japan}}] so that we can get rid of [[[Category:Districts in Ōita Prefecture]]] and get it to point to [[Category:Districts in Oita Prefecture]]?

Hmm... In other words, if I've understood correctly, for the template to "de-macroniz/se" names automatically...?  If so, I'm afraid I don't know, although I suspect that if it is possible, the code might be cumbersome...

A solution that would seem to work with rather than despite macrons would be to permit them in category names, to which those versions without macrons are {{categoryredirect}}ed...?

Just a question, but why not move the category to Category:Districts in Ōita Prefecture (and, all of the other Ōita-related categories)? WP:MOS-JA only mentions that items in categories should be sorted as if it had no macrons, but I don't see any place which prohibits the changing of category names to meet the standards for the rest of the articles. Proposed deletion of various redirects

Hi Bobo12345,

You proposed deletion of various redirects. They probably should be deleted, but Wikipedia:Proposed deletion states, "Items other than articles, including images, templates, Wikipedia essays and redirects are dealt with through other processes." A good place to list them is Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion. They appear noncontroversial and can probably be deleted without any problems.

Honshu and Kyushu

I just found out that Honshu and Kyushu are English words!

Both appear in Merriam-Webster! See [1] and [2]

Therefore I strongly oppose macronization for those two. WhisperToMe 03:43, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Kyushu and Kyūshū are the same word, although probably only the unmacronised version appears in the dictionary, as you pointed out. The issue is whether or not to use the macronised version on Wikipedia. The WP:MOS-JP indicates that for very common Japanese words, the unmacronised version should be used (eg. Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto) but for less common words, the macronised version should be used to aide pronunciation (eg. Tesshō Genda, Ōita Prefecture). Note that you will also find Oita in the MW dictionary. The survey over at the MOS page is more about where to draw the line between common and non-common. Bobo12345 05:25, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

From what I can tell, news articles, municipal websites, and informal publications tend to omit macrons, while maps and formal encyclopedias keep macrons. EDIT: Brittanica does not use macrons for Kyushu, while Encarta uses macrons. WhisperToMe 05:33, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Unintended consequence? I see you've macronized these words in some U.S. Navy ship articles, and I'm sure there are many good reasons for doing so. But I can no longer find these words in an article when I enter "Kyushu" or "Honshu" in the search box on my browser. (And, no, I'm not ever going to enter the macronized versions--too much trouble, don't know any Japanese, too hard to keep up with places that macronize and don't macronize, etc.) Lou Sander 15:35, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Copyright violation?

I'm not sure. I've never dealt with released copyrighted text before (just spotting apparent copyright infringements and tagging them as such), so I'm not certain of the procedure and how claims get verified (I was planning to deal with this properly a bit later anyway). Yes. After doing the Ōita Prefecture and Ōita, Ōita pages by hand and realising what a painful process it was, I got authorised to use AutoWikiBrowser. I moved all of the pages over manually but the used the AWB to convert all of the links to the macroned versions. It was still a long process. Do you use AWB? If not, I suggest you get signed up! WikiJET

Hi there! I think the idea of a JET-related Wiki is a good one, especially if a) you can get a wide range of people to contribute and b) it doesn't turn into a forum for slagging off JET and Japan (a lot of people I know are turned off by Big Daikon because they feel it falls into the latter category). I just had a look at what you have so far and there are some good ideas there. A place for people to put lesson activities/plans/ideas is always good, as would be links to pages of interest to JET participants (Hyperdia, Weather information, Yahoo groups, etc) and also guides to cities and places of interest.

In my second year I was a Regional Prefectural Advisor (because Gifu prefecture is so huge, it's very difficult for the PAs to cover the whole of it, so it is split into five areas and each area has two RPAs who report back to the PA), and at our monthly meetings we decided to make a website called GifuGuide, featuring information for JETs (and other gaijin) in the area, information for people who may be visiting, and things like that. The three or so Wikipedia-savvy people at the meeting said that starting a Wiki would be the best thing, but as we were a minority that idea was scrapped in favour of getting all the JETs in the area to contribute articles. So I think there'll definitely be interest from the JET community. Off the top of my head if you want to pursue this further and if you haven't already done so, talk to one of the AJET representatives in your area and see if they can get it in the monthly AJET bulletin; that should get a lot of people involved, for sure.

Unfortunately, since I left the bubble of Japan I haven't had as much time to spend on Wikipedia (in my last few months on JET my classes had been reduced to two per week; I think I was one of the most underused ALTs ever, hence my prolific Wikipedia input!), but if I have time I'd see if there's anything I could add to the site. Ryukyu Islands

Ryukyu Islands should remain de-macronised according to WP:MOS-JA. It is not the same as Ryūkyū Shotō, according to the what is already explained in the Ryukyu Islands article. These are explained in the two articles, please read them. —Tokek 03:34, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Indeed, it's sometimes hard to keep track of macron policy as it tends to change constantly. Whehter or not macrons should be included, Ryukyu Islands is defined in English-language dictionaries as the set of islands between Taiwan and Kyushu. This definition corresponds to the Japanese term Nansei Shotō. The set of islands is further subdivided into Satsunan Shotō and Ryūkyū Shotō. Hence Ryūkyū Shotō is a subset of Ryukyu Islands (a.k.a. Nansei Shotō), not the equivalent. The two terms should not be equated when they do not share the same definition. —Tokek 08:21, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Why is your name part of Minimata disease?

Why is your name part of Minimata disease? The disease does not formally include your user name. It is terribly tragic if you or any of your family are afflicted with this; but this does not mean that your name should be in the disease name. Dogru144 13:45, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi Marcav. I would be most happy for you to use the map in your textbook. It is licensed under the GPL and Creative Commons licence, so I believe all you have to do is attribute me as the source (Wikipedia user Bobo12345) and make a note that the map remains under that licence. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Minamata disease Bobo12345, are you, or do you know, Shabnum Nami?

• Bobo12345, I hope that you are the same person as Professor Shabnum Nami, but if not, I was stunned to see that Nami's 2014 chapter on Minamata disease, Toxic Effects of Mercury, is word-for-word identical to what you had written eight years earlier on Wikipedia. [3]. I don't see any indication that of an edition of the book earlier than 2014, nor a statement that it's reprinted from a previous article that Nami had written, but he mentions Wikipedia only as the source of his illustrations. It's clear that your work came first; if he and you are not the same person, then it would be fair to say that you are the victim of plagiarism. Mandsford 19:48, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
