January 2012

Hello! On two articles involving Gilbert and Sullivan, you had indicated that the parody A "G. & S." Cocktail has music in Sullivan's style but contains no Sullivan quotations at all. Before we make these changes, would you please elaborate on either of the articles' talk pages (or here) to describe the basis for your belief that there are no Sullivan quotes whatsoever in the piece? Can you point us to any reviews of the piece that say so? Separately, with respect to the disambiguation page Hervé, you attempted to make a change, but the edit caused a formatting mess, and it was not clear what the purpose of your change was. Israel Zangwill

Hi, I'm writing as both a Wikipedia administrator and as someone very interested in Zangwill (so in local parlance I'm an "involved administrator"). The edit you made to Israel Zangwill here is unfortunately in violation of policy. You can only insert material which is published in "reliable sources". A letter in private hands or an unpublished archive is not allowed as a source. This is explained at WP:V and WP:NOR. If you know of some book or published article that reports on this letter, or a web page under rather strict conditions (see WP:RS for guidance), inclusion would be ok. Otherwise, please remove it. Hi Zero, Thanks for your comments about my edit of the Zangwill page. I have changed the reference to reflect a better source for the quotation as follows: "This passage is quoted on page 131 of Theodore Roosevelt and the Idea of Race by Thomas G.Dyer 1980 Louisiana State University Press (Paperback edition 1992). A footnote shows the letter to have been written on November 27, 1912. This letter is held in the Roosevelt Collection, Library of Congress."Bkesselman (talk) 14:34, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

I edited the page in a slightly different way - happy if you want to change it. I am running a project on song-settings of the poem which references this. It's work in progress, and still being expanded. Thanks. Since this is an article about Sullivan's version rather than Procter's I think it's too much. I changed it into footnote 15, but I kept most of your text about the versions. However, the ref to the British Library is not very good. Do you have a ref that would bring someone to an article about the various versions compared with Procter's? -- Ssilvers (talk) 20:31, 19 February 2023 (UTC)

That's fine - I thought it was a bit much. I don't have an article reference yet, such as you mention, as I think I'm the first person to make an in-depth study of this subject. Online references that do exist have incorrect information. I will be writing about it on my site (link in previous answer) very soon. There's already something there, but it needs expanding. Thanks for this. I think that it's probably ok as you have adjusted it. The most important matter is that "I Long for the Sun", which is published in the vocal score with no mention of Grace Torrens, is credited to the correct composer, since that is one of the most important numbers in the show, and the score, by not including her name, implies that Frederic Norton wrote the music for it. This information comes from the back of the sheet music for the interpolated song "My Desert Flower" for which Norton wrote both words and music. Separate sheet music for "I Long for the Sun" is advertised on the back page under the title "I Long to be Free" (together with the music of the first line of the refrain), with music credited to Torrens.
