Japan FAC edit

Hi, sorry to trouble you but the FAC was closed prematurely. It has now been re-opened, so if you could vote again at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Japanthat would help a lot. Thanks, John Smith's 20:04, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Japanese maps edit

Hi there! I see you've been uploading a lot of Lincun's maps from the Japanese Wikipedia for inclusion in articles here. It would be better for all the projects if you could upload them to Wikimedia Commons, as a lot of his maps are already in there. That way all Wikimedia projects can share map images, and you can make sure you're not duplicating efforts. Thanks, Amake 08:59, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

"City" labels edit

Rather than just silently revert each other's work, we should probably talk about this.

You seem to like adding the label "City" and "Town" to municipality names; while I appreciate the faithfulness to the original Japanese 市, 町 etc. suffixes, I think in English these are unnecessary and sound quite awkward (especially "Town").

Of course when there's a need to contrast between the two (a former town becomes a city of the same name, or a city with the same name as its prefecture) then you need to be precise. But even in those cases, I think "city of" and "town of" (lowercase) sound a lot better.

Why don't I like "X City" and "X Town"?

  1. As I mentioned before, they just sound awkward. Yes, this is a personal bias.
  2. Very, very few cities in the world are actually called "X City", either colloquially or officially.
  3. In Japanese it seems very few cities are colloquially referred to with the 市 suffix. In Ehime the only exception is Shikokuchūō, Ehime, which is always referred to as 四国中央市 because the name is so weird without the 市.
  4. From the opening sentence it's quite obvious that the municipality is a city or town; the suffixes aren't necessary from a clarity point of view (with the exceptions I mentioned above).
  5. The distinction between city and town is largely irrelevant to those outside of Japan. Anyone who's interested can follow the city and town links in the opening sentence.
  6. In my experience with US municipalities, the city government is distinguished from the city itself by simply capitalizing the phrase "City of X". This is what I recommend for things like the link to the city homepage, where it's clear that you're talking about the governing body, not the city as a whole.

So, in a nutshell, since the suffixes "City" and "Town" are both awkward and extraneous, I urge you to leave them out.

-Amake 23:28, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

First of all, I didn't intend to silent revert edits. I should have paid closer attention to the history pages, obviously! So sorry about that.
Secondly, I generally agree with you. And it seems that at least Neier does as well, as he reverted some of those edits I made back already. The main reason I made those edits is because the Infobox for Japanese municipalities has a variable that makes the name of the city entered at the top as "Name of Town Hall" in the City Hall section. If the name of the town is entered as "X" instead of "X City" it becomes "X Hall" rather than "X City Hall". I'm sure you can easily see this for yourself.
I agree that it sounds awkward, particularly with "town" as you said. However, I can think of plenty of times where I have referred to and heard other people refer to "Saga City" instead of "Saga" to differentiate between the city and the prefecture. That said I think it's most important to just have a standard. So maybe we should move this conversation to the municipalities talk page and/or just add a paragraph into the main page there that notes the standard of writing "City/Town/Village of X". At least two people agree with that way already, and honestly it would be fine with me to have it that way. BilabialBoxing 02:58, 23 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that I thought you were being underhanded.
I hadn't noticed the "Name of Town Hall" issue; you're right, that is awkward and should be dealt with. It's easy to change the template. I'll try to think of an alternate wording.
I'm glad you suggested codifying these things. I added a passage to WP:MOS-JA#Suffixes.
-Amake 03:12, 23 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I could have sworn that words like that were already in the MoS; which is why I reverted the changes that I noticed. Amake's update to the MoS pretty well matches what I thought was already there, so I have no complaints I guess. Neier 11:57, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Shiroishitownseal.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Shiroishitownseal.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 19:54, 26 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguation link fixing one-day contest edit

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 02:01, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite edit

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:19, 20 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
