VG characters edit

Hi Bigpigeon,

Thanks for your edits on Dragon's Crown. I see you've reinstated my removal of non-playable characters. The reason why I took it out is because it is kind of WP:GAMECRUFTy. Video game articles are aimed to make the reader understand the game, and the plot should be a concise summary. I'm not familiar with the game myself, so I can't really say for sure what should stay and what can go. Let me break it down, with additional advice on editing.

Citizens of Hydeland inhabit the game world, some offer help to the player while others serve as the games antagonists.

  • Tiki The Fairy: Tiki is a fairy that joins you -- Note: per WP:YOU, we try to avoid that word. "The player" or "the main character" is more suitable -- during your adventures and acts as a guide. She'll point out various things that may have slipped your gaze in the heat of battle.
  • Rannie The Rogue: Rannie is a rogue who has accompanied the player on many adventures. He has the ability to open locked doors and treasure boxes scattered throughout Hydeland. He is powerless in battle, preferring to let his allies deal with any foes they encounter.
  • Princess Vivian: Princess Vivian lives in the formidable Hydeland Castle. She will occasionall request your assistance on regal matters.[1] Note: regal matters? If she gives the player quests, that could be incorporated into the plot section.
  • Guildmaster Samuel: A seasoned adventurer and master of the town's Adventurers Guild, you must prove yourself to Samuel before you are able to register. Once you are a member, Samuel will assist you by offering quests and allowing you to hone your skills as an adventurer.[1]
  • Magician Lucain: Lucian lives in the laboratory located in the old tower in town. He is known as one of the realms foremost magicians. Lucian will provide you with aid on your adventure and sell you magic items.[1]
  • Magician Morgan Lisley: Morgan is the owner and shopkeeper of the acclaimed Morgan's Magic Item Shop. With her mystical skills, she offers her assistance to adventurers in need. Her help will be a vital part of your exploration into the dungeons.[1]
  • Prime Minister Gustaf: Prime Minister Gustaf will meet you at Hydeland Castle. He is a loquacious type, especially when compared to the silent Princess. He will offer a certain task to you.[1] Note: A certain task? Don't let the reader guess what this task might be (if it notable to mention of course). Right now, all these characters can easily be fitted into the gameplay section, otherwise is the character at all necessary to understand the story?
  • Guardian of the Temple: You will meet the monk at Canaan Temple, where he worships Althena, the goddess of compassion. It is said that the prayers of these monks can call upon miracles when they reach the goddess...[1]
  • Count Dean: Clad in is great cape, Count Dean stands before you with a presumptuous grin. The younger brother of the king, he requests that you hand over something that belongs to him. It seems he is in conflict with Prime Minister Gustaf and Princess Vivian...[1] Note: this reeks of WP:COPYVIO, and needs a style fix, it isn't at all clear what this character does or wants.

That certain characters embody a particular gameplay element doesn't necessarily mean that they have to be mentioned specifically. A merchant, a sidekick or a medic are typical video game roles. Just by themselves they aren't notable. I hope this helps a bit. Feel free to ask any questions or drop by WP:VG, the Video Game WikiProject. --Soetermans. T / C 12:34, 22 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Soetermans, I appreciate your points and will certainly change the section to be more inline with the standard, however as stated i feel the character section allows us the omit certain info from other sections that could see them becoming long and unwieldy.
For instance Princess Vivian, Prime Minister Gustaf and Count Dean are often used to carry the plot forward in game, but saying so in the plot section would add unnecessary length so i feel that it is better to list them here and imply this through the text in this section, after all it's a short and concise body of text that doesn't detract from the page as a whole.
I will admit this is the weakest section i have written (most of the text is pulled straight from the official site) but intend to get back to it as soon i have finished the development rewrite. if you have any ideas how we can make this better then i'd be willing to discuss it further. Hi Bigpigeon,
Sorry for my late reply, I am swamped this week! But I am always happy to help, feel free to ask questions :)
Right now, the plot section is quite thin actually. You might want to consider just incorporating the characters into the plot section (for instance, BioShock or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim don't have a characters section), or starting out with a setting and characters section, before describing the plot (see Final Fantasy X or The Last of Us). Don't worry about spoilers either, after all, it is a description of what happens (see The Last of Us - if you haven't played it yet, don't read the plot section!).
On a sidenote: pulling texts from official site can often mean it is a copyright violation, but as far as I can see there's isn't a copyright or trademark note on the website, which makes it okay to put here, but it still needs to be encyclopedic of tone and style.
I'll just leave the page for you to edit as you see fit, being busy and all I really shouldn't be wasting time on Wikipedia... Happy editing! --Soetermans. T / C 12:45, 24 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi Soetermans, I will certainly take your advise to heart when i return to the section, i know i may come across as a bit of an ass in the controversy section but i always try and discuss things politely and take criticism and advise.
Honestly i know exactly what you mean about being busy, i think the Dragon's Crown article would be finished by now otherwise. Bigpigeon (talk) 16:55, 24 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
