Chien-Shiung Wu edit

Trying to find a wording that will not confuse readers without getting into excessive detail... American readers will know that Congress restricted international in 1917, and that communists were not normally allowed to travel abroad, and that during the Cold War the McCarran Internal Security Act restricted international travel, but may not know that there were restrictions even on travelling to countries like Britain and France. This resulted in Kent v. Dulles (1958), the first of a series of rulings on the matter by the liberal Warren Court that reversed the former policy of restricting international travel on the basis of political affiliation, but in Zemel v. Rusk (1965) it upheld the restrictions on travel to Communist countries. In Haig v. Agee (1981) it also upheld arbitrary restrictions on travel based on vague national security concerns. As far as I know, that is where things stand today; the use of the past tense is for WP:CRYSTAL, covering possible future changes. It is not clear whether Wu was unable to travel to China solely because it was communist country or because there were national security concerns as well. O.K. - thanks for the thoughtful reply. I was just concerned that the wording was overly broad; there are obviously dimensions to the issue which I am unaware... Bdushaw (talk) 23:29, 27 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Wikitext status edit

Hello, Bdushaw! I've noticed you are one of the main editors to Discovery of the neutron and also the confused copyright status of the article at its beginings. I'll ask some questions also put to JbHunley, namely: Can this article be embedded in a, say, PhD thesis and in what conditions? Should it be cited as from Wikipedia or just the sources used in it without mentioning wikiarticle? Can allegations of plagiarism appear if this wikiarticle is included as is as a subchapter in a thesis?--5.2.200.163 (talk) 15:08, 16 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

To my knowledge this article has been developed and written by wikipedians. Licences for using material from articles are rather liberal - I think you can use or quote whatever you like, just so long as the Wikipedia source is acknowledged. I am not an expert however, but I am sure there is a page on licensing/using wikipedia pages. We had problems of apparent copywrite violations, but that was just other web pages swiping the wikipedia page wholesale and not acknowledging that fact!!! Bdushaw (talk) (As for plagarism in a dissertaion...that would be a matter of checking university policies about whether that was ok or not.) Bdushaw (talk) 00:35, 24 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
OK, thanks for your answer.--5.2.200.163 (talk) 16:42, 24 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Edit description detail edit

Also about the article mentioned above Discovery of the neutron I see your edit from 10th of June, 19:32 with the description remove original research (?) and ambiguous reference). Can you specify what possible original research (?) is involved and how is the removed cited reference ambiguous?--5.2.200.163 (talk) 11:47, 6 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Copying within Wikipedia requires proper attribution edit

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Island of stability into Valley of stability. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. If you are the sole author of the prose that was moved, attribution is not required. — Diannaa (talk) 17:27, 1 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the notification - I was unaware that there were procedures for copying between wikipedia articles. I will look into how to properly attribute. It seems to be not a generally known policy - I see copies between articles all the time! Bdushaw (talk) 18:14, 1 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Copy-and-paste moves edit

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Gamow–Teller transition a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Beta decay transition. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. 🎄BethNaught (talk)🎄 11:50, 24 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks - that event was some time ago, and I recall now the merge/paste issue that caused. I had thought it was sorted out... That's the only page I did that sort of thing to, with the lesson learned. Happy Christmas! Bdushaw (talk) 14:35, 24 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Montjuïc (Girona) moved to draftspace edit

An article you recently created, Montjuïc (Girona), does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. PC78 (talk) 21:03, 26 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

I don't suppose I could get you to approve the (revised) draft article now? I've never had to go through the draft process before, and the notices tell me that a review at this point could take 8 weeks! Though I stumble around with such things as moving articles and other Wikipedia mechanics, I am not exactly new to article creation/writing! Bdushaw (talk) 19:36, 27 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Montjuïc edit

The guidelines for disambiguation page states that interlanguage links should go to the disambiguation page and not to individual entries, but it seems to me that no one actually does that. My concern with adding any interlanguage disambiguation page is that it usually just adds a bunch of unambiguous partial title match which is a constant problem for disambiguation pages in general.

I guess that my suggestion would be to pick only those interlanguage entries that follow our disambiguation guidelines (MOS:DABENTRY), like 'Montjuïc (Pinós)'. And add a link to an English language article that mentions the entry, if possible. If it seems that there is a long list of eligible entries on the other-language disambiguation page, then link to that disambiguation page instead.

There are a couple of ways to format interlanguage links. My preference for articles that don't exist in English Wikipedia is: {{ill|English title|language code|Other language title}} - for example {{ill|Montjuïc (Pinós)|ca}} which renders as Montjuïc (Pinós) [ca]. If the titles are identical in the 2 languages, you only need to list it once. This won't work for the Catalan disambiguation page, since there's an English article with the same title. I think that you would have to use [[:ca:Montjuïc]] (ca:Montjuïc).

Hope this helps, Leschnei (talk) 13:46, 28 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks - I think this is helpful. My thought was to have a "See also" section on the disambiguation page that is a direct link to the Catalan disambiguation page, rather than include particular links to the Catalan wikipedia. I'll try it...someone can delete it if is inappropriate

Montjuïc and Montjuïc (Barcelona) edit

If you would like to get some advice on moving Montjuïc to Montjuïc (Barcelona), I would suggest dropping a note at Wikipedia talk:Disambiguation and pointing them to the Move discussion. The folks that hang out there have much more experience than me. They can give you good advice about primary topic, etc, and also help with the move (which is a little complicated because you would be rearranging existing articles rather than just moving to a new title). Leschnei (talk) 13:49, 28 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks again - reading the comments there I learned about the "primary topic" policy, so that the move I suggested was not appropriate. Primary topic trumps basic logic and consistency of language. I don't object too much. Bdushaw (talk) 14:41, 28 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yes, on the whole I find it easier to fix problems than describe them. And I'm not sure why I remarked on the distance between subjects, because I've had some pretty wild swings (List of children's classic books, Corrupting Dr. Nice, Demining, Predation ...)
