David Freidel moved to draftspace

edit

An article you recently created, David Freidel, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Hey just wanted to check if this works a little better now. It's tough because there aren't really very many sources about female martial artists from the 1800s because their achievements were ignored during their lives and many details on them were destroyed during the Okinawa bombings, but that doesn't make them less important; I think it's better that there's a stub than no information at all. Wak Chanil Ajaw

edit

Hello!! I saw your changes to the page of the Maya queen Wak Chanil Ajaw. It was you who placed her as regent for her sons? With which source? I'm no expert in the matter, but I must confess this edit confused me. She is titled "Ajaw" like the kings in that time, and she has a very long regency for the second son. Even if it was an interregnum and not a regency in the period c.728-741, shouldn't she be reigning effectively? I'm considering: if Yax Mayuy was her son, like K'ahk Tiliw, by the time of K'ahk Tiliw's death, shouln't he be an adult already? So why a regency? And, even if Yax Mayuy was her grandson (and K'ahk Tiliw's son), doesn't a twenty year regency feel too long? I'm talking with no experience on the matter (but very interested on it), but I always thought that Lady Six Sky's case was similar to Catherine the Great (only instead of succeeding a husband she succeeds her son): she ruled after the death of K'ahk Tiliw until her own death; that's why Yax Mayuy succeeded so late on the throne. What's your opinion? Greetings, 01:51, 4 August 2022 (UTC) Mhmrodrigues (talk) 01:51, 4 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • It's a graet question. The source is Helmke's Heart and Stomach of a Queen, which is one of the major sources in this article. Calling her regent during the Yax Mayuy years is possibly a stretch but Helmke does it, but the truth is she probably had less political power during this time than during K'ahk' Tiliw's admin, not more--and she may have even left Naranjo entirely. The problem is, we don't have many inscriptions from this time, but in the ones we do have, she seems to be centering Yax Mayuy. (For example, the back of an older monument about Six Sky is recarved to provide info about Yax Mayuy.) There's no evidence she was ruling herself. Her name glyphs don't change.

K'ahk' Tiliw makes it seem as though she wasn't ruling directly earlier, either. He counts himself as the 38th in line to the throne instead of the 39th as it would be if she were a full king. As for the ajaw title, it could better be translated as holy lord, not king, and there are many women who were not the paramount political figures who used it: Lady Wak Tuun of Yaxchilan calls herself an Ix Ik'a' Ajaw though she was the wife of the king, not a leader herself, as does Lady Winikhaab Ajaw of Piedras Negras. Even a three-year-old girl who was definitely not queen at the time uses the ajaw title on Piedras Negras Stela 3. Lady Six Sky calls herself Ix Mutuul Ajaw because she's from the Dos Pilas royal family; she never calls herself Ix Sa'al Ajaw, which would be the name for someone from Naranjo. At the same time she was using the term, there was a king in power in Naranjo (her brother), so the term isn't restricted to people who are in that paramount political position. As for her name, Lady Six Sky's name was probably actually Wak Chan Jalam Lem; Ajaw may have been a part of that name or it may not, though it looks like the ajaw glyph in many drawings, it's either the Jalam glyph or the Jalam glyph infixed with the Ajaw glyph. It's also worth noting that it was common practice for a Maya queen from an outside polity to come into a city and serve as high-ranking representative for the city of her birth; at Waka' the queen wielded an incredible amount of power, but she still identified as an outsider and served with a king. In his article, Helmke uses the term regent for her relationship with Yax Mayuy and describes her like a specific Japanese empress known as Cixi who basically served as regent for multiple emperors, which is why I used the term. (He does also mention Catherine the Great so that's an apt comparison.) But you do make me wonder if it would be better to say she wasn't regent because I'm not sure what her role was in that government, and again she may have even left the city since she appears to have been buried in Dos Pilas, not Naranjo. That said, if we deleted the second regency, it would mean demoting her, not making her an independent queen, since there is no evidence she served as such. If that isn't a satisfactory answer, please let me know! Thanks

@Arqueogato: Hi! It's a very satisfactory answer, thank you for your understanding and patience with me!! But, we can say at least that she held the paramount power in 682-693, right? The same power held, for example, by Lady K'abel in El Peru (Waka), or the Queens Lady Ch'een and Lady K'awiil in Cobá (although these two were married). I mean, Six Sky'son K'ahk Tiliw would not base his power continuous and exclusively on her if she was only a foreigner and didn't held at some point the paramount power, right? Because if so, K'ahk Tiliw would make more references to his father and underline his relation to the previous dynasty (as it seems that his father was a cousin of a previous ruler). Refering to the period 728-741, I didn't know that she left Naranjo! Thank you for the info! I thought she died when doing a simple trip to home, and died there. But leaving Naranjo completely? That'new for me. But do you know when? And why Yax Mayuy ascended so late, exactly in the year Six Sky died, as he only appears reign officially since then?
