Belated Happy New Year with a Toast!

float

Here's a toast to the host
Of those who edit wiki near and far,
To a friend we send a message, "keep the data up to par".
We drink to those who wrote a lot of prose,
And then they whacked a vandal several dozen blows.
A toast to the host of those who boast, the Wikipedians!

A Very Happy (belated) New Year to you Arbitraily0 :) Enjoy the Whisky!   ~TheGeneralUser (talk) 06:49, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Card of Thanks

Just a short note to say I appreciate the trust in me you gave when granting rollback rights. I have screwed up so many times since then, but I try to fix my mistakes and I always remember that my actions could reflect on you, even now that I'm beginning to use Twinkle and AWB. Hope you're continuing to do well, and continued warm regards. RiverStyx23{submarinetarget} 03:07, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

Meeting this week?

Happy new semester! I may have missed you guys last week, but are we all still meeting Thurs. nights this term? Not sure I can make it this week but that is generally a good time for me. Adam Kriesberg (talk) 03:54, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Greetings Adam! Yes, meetings will continue as last term. I will be out of town tomorrow, but we are aiming to set up our mass meeting / edit-a-thon for Thursday January 31. Best regards, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 03:47, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

January 2013

In a recent edit to the page Air ioniser, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. If you have any questions about this, you can ask me on my talk page or visit the help desk. Thank you. Escape Orbit (Talk) 18:46, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Please revert your changes, I see no reason for this change of spelling. Thanks. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 18:49, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
Greetings Escape Orbit, I believe my change was in argreement with Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Wikipedia:Manual of Style. The majority of the article (including the all of the sources, use "ize"). Your thoughts? Arbitrarily0 (talk) 18:52, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
What the cites use doesn't matter as we are not using the cites to verify the spelling. Are you suggesting that the article can now only use cites with the 'z' spelling? Because should anyone add one with an 's' the consistency you're trying to achieve would be ruined. Yes, consistency within the article matters, but I believe it was consistent using 's'. MOS guidelines say that unless there is a clear national connection in the article subject, spelling varieties should not be changed. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 18:58, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
My apologies, Escape Orbit; in my link above I sourced the wrong location. I intended to link to Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Consistency within articles, which addresses this. The idea is to use the spelling that is already most common within the article. In this case, "ize" was more common (2:1 or 3:1, without including the sources). The fact that the source use "ize" is an just a coincidental bonus, nothing more. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 19:04, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
Consistency is equally about sticking with how the spelling started out, unless there is good reason to change. If there was content added to the article that doesn't follow the spelling of the article name, no matter how many instances, then it is they that should be fixed, not the other way around. If I add a bunch more cited content, choosing to spell it with an 's', do we switch it all back again? That doesn't seem a sensible way of handling things. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 13:18, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
Hi Escape Orbit. I agree completely. I merely presumed, given the significantly larger frequency of American spellings, that American English was the pre-existing state of the article (it was even tagged with {{Use American English}}). Evidently not, but Jon C. has efficiently addressed this. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 14:16, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

Copy of deleted pages request

Hello. Would you be so kind as to provide a copy of some deleted pages please? I'm not bothered about restoring them as I do not want to get into the politics of why they were deleted. Two things...

Arbitrarily0, I've got a couple quick things for you:

  1. User:Malepheasant is the user I mentioned last night
  2. Could you please take a look at this for the Vladivostok Summit article and rate it objectively on our WP:GRF quality and importance scales?

Thanks and have a great weekend! Michael Barera (talk) 18:42, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for rating the Vladivostok Summit article! It's much appreciated! Michael Barera (talk) 20:25, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
Sure, Michael. I noticed that the page history of Vladivostok Summit Meeting on Arms Control when copying from Wikipedia:WikiProject Gerald Ford/Peer review was fragmented. Was this intended? Arbitrarily0 (talk) 20:26, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
Yes: when I write new articles like this (admittedly I've only done it a few times, but still), I like to develop them in a sandbox or sandbox-like space until they are ready to move to the mainspace. I've linked to WP:GRF/PR in the history, but I regard the article itself as being "created" when it was moved into the mainspace, not when I started working in my sandbox. If you think this practice is incorrect, please let me know, but I've been doing it for years and haven't had any problems with it (or even comments about it). Thanks and have a great break! Michael Barera (talk) 20:30, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
It is not a problem when you are the only contributor (as was the case here, or in your sandbox), but it causes an attribution issue when several users collaborate. The problem in this case is that next time there is a collaboration undertaken at WP:GRF/PR, the old history will be combined with the new, and will need sorting out (assuming multiple different users contribute). It should be noted that DYK agrees with you that articles are "created" when they are moved to the mainspace. Cheers mate, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 00:36, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

Request unprotection of List of best selling music artists

Hello. A year and a half ago, on 10 September 2011, you protected the article List of best selling music artists due to persistent vandalism. I'm sure the vandals have moved on since then. I would like to request that the article be unprotected. Thank you. 24.22.75.14 (talk) 23:00, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

Dear, 24.22.75.14. This is a very active page, therefore I think it would be better to bring this up at Talk:List of best-selling music artists. I am unfamiliar with the subject, and so I think the editors there will know the situation better. However, please let me know if you have any questions. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 00:39, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

Please help to provide fair information

The page related cTrader (of spotware limited) had been deleted by you - I do not understand why: the company operates on the market for a few years; won nomination of the year in forex industry for 2012; has a significant market share, authorised by various financial institutions in Europe, there is so much about it in the press; why do you object public learning more about the company? Please help me to find justice in this unfair world.

Kind regards Olga ---- — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.152.19.73 (talk) 20:29, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Greetings Olga. If you think that cTrader meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability (which it very well may), I would recommend that you collect all of the relevant secondary sources. Feel free to paste them here. Alternatively, it may be better to start by expanding the section in FxPro#cTrader. Let me know your thoughts; I do not wish you to believe that Wikipedia is stifling encyclopedic information. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 00:45, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

Dear Arbitrarily0 I took some time to research the topic from different angles: in terms of notability criteria I am convinced that cTrader meets the criteria because it is a trading platform for forex industry with the current client base (brokers) of over 40 companies and the number and as I understand is constantly expanding- so FxPro is one on these 40+ brokers, maybe it will be very biased to present cTrader by expanding the section on FxPro's page; they set new industry standards in the so-far monopolistic trading industry (where previously mainly operated Metatrader). I have checked the websites of their most notable clients although not all are presented in Wikipedia - they do indeed actively offer trading through cTrader's platform. By the number of players in the industry the company has acquired market share in excess of 10 per cent and that is only in the first year.

In terms of secondary resources - they have adequate press coverage for a new company; if you agree that they deserve to have a page I will start collecting more info from secondary sources and drafting a wiki-page for them.

Please let me know your experienced outlook on this issue. Many thanks. Olga 193.92.136.72 (talk) 19:09, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi again Olga. I think the most appropriate way to continue would be to add any noteworthy information about cTrader (information that is reliable sourced) to the page FxPro#cTrader. Note that coverage from major news sources is preferred over press releases. If the information on cTrader begins to dominate the FxPro page, then it may be worth considering splitting cTrader into its own article, but as it stands the article seems balanced. Please continue to feel comfortable in asking me any questions. Best regards, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 00:36, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

Dear Arbitrarily0, Do I need to agree text with you before I paste it to FxPro's article or shall I post it here and you will add it yourself? Olga 62.152.19.73 (talk) 07:48, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Regarding next week's meeting

Is there anything I should prepare before next week's meeting? I just want to make sure I come as prepared as I can. Thanks and have a great weekend! Michael Barera (talk) 01:01, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

A very interesting question. Are you speaking of this "self-analysis" meeting? I have realized that that is a very scary title. Perhaps next meeting we should simply talk and see if there is anything we should do to close out the year (end of year event, elections, etc), but regardless, it will be simple and assuredly disorganized. Bring any ideas you like, but I imagine we are still in the meeting about meeting stages. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 01:48, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Khoren Oganesian move

Hello. You closed the discussion as denied, but I wanted to point out that Khoren Hovhannisyan was born and has always lived in Armenia. That means he speaks the Eastern dialect. To put it in simple terms:

Oganesian = Western dialect

Hovhannisyan = Eastern dialect

Both are pronounced the same way. Even though the discussion didn't lean that way, I don't think this can really be debated because it comes down to the fact Hovhannisyan used the Eastern dialect. Will you please move the page anyway? --TheShadowCrow (talk) 00:53, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi TheShadowCrow. Interesting! Since there was already a discussion, I propose we start a new one at Talk:Khoren Oganesian, to be formal. I propose this because there were two other editors who originally opposed the move. Let me know your thoughts, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 00:57, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

Xbox TEN

At one point in the 2012 edits of Xbox One someone claimed it was a repost of Xbox TEN [1]. The AFD for this "Xbox TEN" is also mentioned in the article milestones. So shouldn't the history for Xbox TEN be undeleted & moved over to the Xbox One edit history? SNS (talk) 01:41, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Hello SNS! Please bear with me, the page history is quite complicated, but it seems like indeed, all of the old revisions of Xbox TEN are still stored in the deleted revisions at Xbox TEN. Possibly then the better solution is to remove the Xbox TEN AFD from the Xbox One milestones. The reason for history merges is for attribution purposes, but looking at the state of the old Xbox TEN article, it seems significantly different to the past revision at Xbox ONE here. Let me know your thoughts, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 13:02, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
My thoughts on the subject is that any serious attempt at making a previous article should be visible in some way (either through a history merge with the current article or as the edit history of a redirect). SNS (talk) 01:51, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
Ah, I think I understand you now. I have restored and redirected Xbox TEN (the name "Xbox TEN" as a rumored name appears in several places online). Does this take care of things? Arbitrarily0 (talk) 20:34, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
Yeah the redirect works out good, the only other thing I can think of is restorations of Xbox 3 & Xbox 180 as redirects but the former is already being handled by someone else & the latter probably won't work as a redirect. SNS (talk) 03:00, 25 May 2013 (UTC)
Alright. Revisions at Xbox 180 did not cover Xbox One, but rather discussed a new handheld gaming device by Microsoft (likely a hoax, see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Xbox 180). Arbitrarily0 (talk) 16:23, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Good morning indeed! Unfortunately, the article is lacking that information, and never had it since it is a relatively new page. If such information can be located (and sourced), it would be a great addition to the article. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 17:03, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Animal Crossing characters

I'm thinking of adding information to the List of Animal Crossing characters from the older List of characters in the Animal Crossing series. The latter would need to be restored. SNS (talk) 23:36, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi SNS, sorry for my lapse. Did anything ever come of this? Arbitrarily0 (talk) 20:04, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
No, I still need List of characters in the Animal Crossing series to be restored. SNS (talk) 02:06, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
Okay, I have done so. Remember to use {{copied}} templates to keep track of attribution. Note though that the concerns of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of characters in the Animal Crossing series may still apply to the new article. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 10:08, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

Moor Park (school)

Hello Arbitrarily0, or should I say, Dear Mr 0...

Advice needed please. Some years ago you took the decision to remove our page and redirect it to another. However we do feel we should have a page - all the schools on our local circuit do, such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abberley_Hall_School and we wondered why ours was removed.

We are a school of national importance, and feed children to national senior schools such as Rugby and Eton.

Please explain how I can give the page some weight and ensure it does not get deleted again. I have replaced the redirect with a short placeholder text.

Thanks

Greeting Jayartibee. Moor Park School was redirected due to a discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Moor Park School. Are there now secondary sources that we could build an article off of? Arbitrarily0 (talk) 16:48, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
Hi thanks for replying. Can a group of people who know the school well not write the relevant paragraphs? We can of course cite the various websites and so on. Jayartibee (talk) 15:59, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
Hello again Jayartibee. One must be careful to avoid a conflict of interest. In general, only information that exists in secondary sources should be used in Wikipedia articles. The information we contribute to Wikipedia must not only be true, but also verifiable. Let me know your thoughts, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 20:04, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Mark A. Fisher

In 2010, you deleted a page of Mark A. Fisher Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Mark_A._Fischer. The page has been recreated Mark_A._Fischer recently, and showed up in the list of pages to be patrolled, by a blocked user listed in Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Morning277. This SP investigation appears to be related to edits for payment. It appears to me that the Mark A. Fisher page could be nominated for deletion following the result of the 2010 discussion, but I can't verify how similar or different the page is from the 2010 version. In addition, my knowledge of the correct procedures is a bit limited. Since you were involved in the deletion of the previous version, I would like to get some advice on this. Rwos (talk) 12:37, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Greetings Rwos! The current article on Mark A. Fischer is vastly different than the one deleted in 2010. However, the article still must provide evidence, through reliable secondary sources, that the subject meets the notability criteria for people, irrespective of any past deletion discussions. To my estimation, the current article demonstrates sufficient notability, although perhaps it has a promotional air about it. This can be addressed through editing, however, whereas notability is more intrinsic. All this must be taken in light of the sockpuppet investigation, however, of which I am unfamiliar with. Hope this helps - and hope to continue seeing you edit Wikipedia! Arbitrarily0 (talk) 08:19, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

Paradigm City

The Paradigm City page should be restored as seperate page. Like the megadues's there was enough separate information shown in the anime. The fictional cities for the Batman and Superman comics are listed on individual pages. 174.22.9.141 (talk) 17:48, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

Greetings! In 2010 consensus was to merge Paradigm City because "a whole article of in-universe information is too excessive and goes against WP:WAF." Some fictional cities, perhaps like the ones you mentioned, have garnered significant coverage by secondary-sources. Is the same now the case for Paradigm City? Conlang Notability

Hello, you recently restored the Notability issues banner on the Angos (Constructed Language) page. The language does have a notable secondary source which mentions the language in substantial academic detail. Wikipedia, to my knowledge, does not have a standardized method for establishing notability among constructed languages, other than simply providing a third-party source that describes the language. Which criteria are you using to rate notability? Razlem (talk) 05:53, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

Greetings Razlam. You ask a fair question. I was basing my action off of the general notability guideline, in which a notable topic is expected to be the subject of multiple secondary sources, as opposed to a single one. Sources from news, books, or other such media would help this. However, I am very unfamiliar with this topic, so have opened a thread here. Best regards, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 11:22, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

Peter Nicholson Wikipedia article

Hi Arbitrarily,

Not sure if you remember, but back in 2010 I tried to keep my Wikipedia article up and running at Wikipedia. To no avail, despite your help! Well, in the interim, I have put up this article, with some additions, in two other places which you can see below at the links. I wonder if things would be more propitious now at Wikipedia—to try again—or not.

With kind regards, Peter https://asauthors.org/memberportfolios/peter-nicholson

http://peternicholson.cm.au/bio.html Waverleywattle (talk) 00:52, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Greetings Peter. The important criteria for establishing notability is the existence of multiple, secondary sources which discuss the subject. Have such been generated? Now, in the event that you are the Peter Nicholson in question, for neutrality reasons it is usually best if one avoids making an article about themselves (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest). Your thoughts? Arbitrarily0 (talk) 15:00, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

Brandon Berrey (born December 21, 1978) in Montgomery, Alabama, is an Artist, Illustrator and Poet. He embodies the spirit of art in the South. He graduated from Troy University in Advertising and Graphic Design, and became one of seven Southeast art students to study abroad with the Nature Art and Life League in France under Nall Hollis who studied under Salvador Dali. He was also a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.

In that same year, Brandon founded the Fallen Heroes Foundation after September 11, 2001 to raise money for the fire fighters families after the tragedy. In fact, one of his paintings created in honor of the firefighters was reproduced as a poster and sold by the Alabama Red Cross and featured on CNN memorial footage. Brandon later opened Berrey Art and Design, and began his work as Artist and Illustrator for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Brandon culls a great deal of his inspiration from his father, Bucky Berrey, a renowned place kicker under “Bear” Bryant who went on to sign with the Atlanta Falcons. Now, along with running his own art business and exploring the outdoors through his work with the Conservation Department, Brandon is also an avid kayaker, canoer, and all around outdoorsman, even teaching a hiking class for women called “Becoming an Outdoors-Woman.” He also writes, with his poetry nationally published and awarded. Brandon has overcome the stigma of starving artist and gone on to contribute his art and dedication to the great outdoors worldwide.

Michigan Wikipedians

Thank you for the invitation to Michigan Wikipedians. I would love to attend your meeting in the Shapiro Library, but I am an old alum living and working in New Jersey. Incidentally, I believe that the library is named for one of my old, great professors. Tobydavid (talk) 00:45, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

Dear Tobydavid, thanks for your encouraging note! Perhaps you refer to Harold Tafler Shapiro? In any event, hope to see you around the Wiki in the future. Best regards, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 13:02, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

Greetings Arbitrarily0! Thanks for the invite to the meeting! I am actually an alumni, but I will be in Ann Arbor for the next few days and could make the meeting. Would my alumni status be an issue for me to attend?

Excelartes (talk) 05:16, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

Hello there Excelartes! Feel most welcome to attend. It will be great to meet you. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 23:30, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for the invitation to join Michigan Wikipedians. Now in my 93d year, I really cannot attend meetings, but I'd appreciate rermaining on the roster and being informed. I use e-mail widely. I've added the following welcome message to the talk pages of everyone at the seminar on Monday...

Just to let you know, I've added the following welcome message to the talk pages of everyone at the seminar on Monday. It gives a link to the seminar page (in case anyone wants to go back and check out the intermediate tutorial), and it also mentions our regular meetings and invites everyone to attend and/or connected with us on-wiki. {{subst:Welcome}}
Thanks for coming to the Michigan Wikipedians' Learn to edit Wikipedia seminar on Monday. I hope that you found the seminar to be useful. If you have any questions about Wikipedia, please don't hesitate to ask me. If you have an interest, feel free to join the Michigan Wikipedians: we meet every Monday night, 8-9pm, in the PC Classroom in North Quad's Language Resource Center (the same place and time as the Learn to edit Wikipedia seminar). Again, welcome to Wikipedia! Michael Barera (talk) 04:26, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
A great idea. Thanks for doing this Michael. Have a nice weekend, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 00:08, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
I'm glad you think it was a good idea, and have a nice weekend yourself! Michael Barera (talk) 02:02, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Stupefying potency

I did, yes - thanks for the correction. Someone reused the exact same phrase in the next sentence (which does not appear to be a quotation); I was aiming to change that one (because it's redundent, two sentences in a row), but my aim was a bit off. Should be all squared away now. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:08, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

Excellent! Good work mate. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 21:43, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
