Contributing to Wikipedia edit

Hello. I notice since you joined us three weeks ago that you've made over 140 edits, but not one has been to a Wikipedia article as yet. I'm sorry you seem to be struggling. I have left a welcome message for you above so that you can read more about how to edit with either of our two editing tools.

I'm afraid your question to the Teahouse on 1st November was inserted into the wrong place (at the end of another old thread) so we all missed it. Sorry about that! I have removed it and reposted it for you in the correct place, which you can see here.

You can visit Wikipedia:Task Center to find a whole range of ideas of simple tasks to get you started making small edits to improve articles. Alternatively, in 'Desktop' view, you may notice that you have a Tab marked 'Homepage' next to your Userpage and talk page Tabs. this is a place that offers small editing suggestions to get new users started.

I'm actually quite surprised you say you are struggling to edit Wikipedia when you have quite competently and endlessly fiddled around with Userboxes on your Userpage. It almost seems like you've done this before. So, I suggest you click the big blue 'Learn More About Editing' link above and follow the links to understand how to make small improvements to articles.

As this is an encyclopaedia, everything should be written in a neutral, encyclopaedic manner. Absolutely no opinions or 'stuff you happen to know' should ever be added to an article. Instead, any factual statement you make must be supported by a reference (=citation) to a high quality, published source, such as a printed book, major mainstream or media outlet. No adding stuff from personal blogs or social media, of course! Assuming this is your first time here, best wishes on your Wikipedia Journey! Nick Moyes (talk) 22:42, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hiya! I'm another editor here, and I second Nick's message above. It feels that you have a really good understanding of the underlying wiki-code and that you played around and explored a bit of the more social parts of the site. You would be a really good contributor if you'd start editing and doing a few of the tasks here, good luck! Justiyaya 05:11, 4 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi, a quick question: have you edited previously under a different account? Thanks, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 10:55, 5 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Not here to build an encyclopaedia - formal warning edit

@Anotaomo After four weeks of playing around - primarily with your userpage and doing other daft stuff (like this) - it is now time for you to decide whether you actually want to contribute to this encyclopedia. None of your 180 edits thus far have added one single thing to any existing article, and you have had access to all 6.7 million of them!

If you don't want to help improve the encyclopaedia, or simply can't be bothered to read the links to the help and advice you have already been offered in various places, I would respectfully suggest it is time for you to leave Wikipedia and go and play somewhere else. If you continue as you have been doing, I will feel obliged to remove your editing rights, per WP:NOTHERE, as I am now of the opinion that you are not here to help build an encyclopaedia. This is a serious project, so it's time to decide if you want to contribute to it, or just play around on the sidelines. You choose.

At the Teahouse today, you responded to someone who suggested you found some 'stub' articles to improve. You said you did not know how to edit a stub article. That's simply a category of encyclopaedia article which is seen as very short and inadequate for the topic, so can be easily improved. So, here's what you can do:

I see you joined WP:WikiProject Southeast Asia. So, scroll down to the colourful article assessment table on that page. It's headed 'Statistics' (see here). Look at the row entitled 'Stub' and click the number in the table. There are 3,940 Stub articles of varying 'importance' to that Project, plus a further 2,363 slightly less short articles, deemed as 'Start' class. Click one of the numbers and you will get a list of them. Just browse through those that sound of interest to you and see if there are any minor typos, grammatical errors , 'citation needed' templates where you can go off and look for supporting information from sources that you can insert. (Further guidance at WP:REFBEGIN). Please also read through WP:Contributing to Wikipedia.

Whilst we are happy to help new users who genuinely encounter difficulty understanding how to get started (and are pleased to answer specific questions) we do expect you to follow the links to advice pages and read and understand them for yourself. We also need to see evidence that you have actually attempted to contribute to an encyclopaedia article. You have not yet done that.

If you are too young, or simply don't know what worthwhile contribution you can make to this encyclopaedia, then Wikipedia is evidently not the place for you. The editing you've already done on your userpage, making userboxes and in joining WikiProjects suggests you know full well how to use our editing tools. So, I have to ask: Have you had a previous account which has been blocked in the past? Your actions correspond pretty closely with people I have encountered who create WP:SOCKPUPPET accounts so they can return and continue messing about here whilst their primary account remains blocked. When I see such behaviour I usually ask a WP:CHECKUSER to investigate.

TLDR: You must now decide what actions you are going to take. Continue messing around in Userspace, and your editing career here will be a short one. Show evidence that you want to contribute to improve and help build this encyclopaedia, and you are welcome to remain and we will support you when you encounter specific difficulties. You choose. Yep, and each project has a similar page. For stubs, you may have to track down reliable sources first, then just summarize and cite your sources. Check out:
