Furness College, Lancaster University

Hi,

I understand that you probably strive to ensure clarity of information and presentation of information on a wide variety of wikipedia articles, but it seems you have gone a bit overkill on the Furness College article. The article is never going to be up to a standard that would probably satisfy your expectations, nor those of Wikipedia, but by definition, there has to be an article. It would be better if this contained some relevant and useful information rather than be completely empty. A lot of the information cannot be referenced to online checkable sources, both the official Lancaster Uni website and the official Furness College page are lacking in information.

So, enforcing such a rule would strip the article of any relevance to the reader. The article is edited by staff and members of the College who either know the information personally or can find it dotted around the College's building or in the internal records. This is the exact same way that the other articles on Lancaster University colleges are maintained and checked for accuracy. If you wish to collectivly edit each of those college's pages and enforce the same rules then fair enough, and good luck to keeping those changes in force, but to slam those rules on just one college is unfair and pointless. I am going to revert the changes you made and I ask that you leave us to continue editing it ourselves.

Hello, I can understand why you might be frustrated, however there are a number of reasons for making the changes. "The article is never going to be up to a standard that would probably satisfy your expectations, nor those of Wikipedia, but by definition, there has to be an article." I kind of disagree with you, the article can be as good as any material out there but you cannot claim thinks on wikipedia is you can't provide relevant references. If there are no references then there probably shouldn't be an article. Just like writing an academic paper, an encyclopaedia needs to be reputable and reference anything it states. You can refer to archives of the college or material if you can reference it.

I don't think anything I removed was relevant or useful. List past JCR presidents and staff isn't relevant to an encyclopedia. Most of these people are not notable, and by that I mean have a national or international presence and so cannot be included. If you want to keep a record of this information I suggest you start a personal website or ask the college to record it on their website. Wikipedia is not your personal website. I refer to WP:OWN, be careful to claim ownership of pages otherwise it could get you blocked in future. Also, I would be cautious if you have a conflict of interest and are involved with the college, wikipedia needs to keep to a neutral point of view, WP:NPOV.

I believe the other college pages follow similar rules since I went through these pages and removed similar material. I'm not picking this college in particular. Check if you need to. Sorry if any of this seems harsh and i'm happy to explain more. Aloneinthewild (talk) 21:56, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Im still trying to learn how to do references, and so if I could I would rectify some of these issues. There seems to many people these days on here that are all to happy to go through articles removing information because its not cited or they challenge it, without actually researching. A few months ago someone removed the College motto from the page, because it wasn't cited, even though its clearly on the Lancaster University official page. I agree it does need to be reputable, but I think the information should remain until we have a chance to learn to reference with wikipedia and decide what information is useful to be on here. Even in an academic paper, the reader has to place some trust in the author and editorial processes, especially in arts subjects, ideas and information can be provided but cannot be necessarly backed up by hard proof, especially ones that are of an online digital nature.

I am a college staff member, but I am well aware of Wiki's code of conduct and I just wish to ensure information is presented on equal terms with the other colleges. I see you have actually recently gone through and edited the other college pages. It will be interesting to see if this stays. Is there an actual wikipedia suggestion that says that people have to be notable internationally and nationally to be listed, I have not seen one? If a headmaster of a School is not well known, does that mean he is not listed as the headmaster? Im going to point to 5th pillar of Wikipedia and do my best to improve the article as I can, if you would like to join in by helping with references or other presentation ideas and such, then that would be great. Removing as much information as you did, helps nobody in my opinion.

The references is a lot better now. I'd be happy to help out but i'm afraid I don't know much about the topic. I still don't agree with listing jcr committees, this has been discussed with lots of other pages and will always cause debate. As you remark a headmaster would be ok as it sticks to the topic of the article, however lists of student positions which change every year is not relevant. Thanks for contributing to the list. I think heads of state and government should have a separate section. When "heads of state and government" is in alumni section, it would be inapt to include a head of state/government who is a faculty member or staff at the university. Queen Mary University of London founding date

Queen Mary University of London was not founded in 1934 Aloneinthewild, which is why I changed it to the date Westfield College was established in 1882. The university was established between 1885 and 1887.

Queen Mary College didn't gain its royal charter until this year (even though it had been formed years previously)

The established date for all those in the list is the date Royal Charter was given. Westfield College may have been founded then, but it was not the current institution that now exists. I can understand that date of establishment is debatable but the date of royal charter is a good standard to use and has been used through university articles.
