Re: Hamas & Beit Lahia

Hello abn al Amir, Thanks for contacting me. For the Hamas article, I think there were two points:

1. You added a paragraph about the assassination of Sheikh Yassin under the new heading of "truce violations", however you probably didn't notice that his assassination, as well as those of Abd al Aziz Rantisi and others, are already mentioned under the timeline section.
2. In the section briefly mentioning the Gaza beach blast, you inserted seven who belonged to the same family, however in such a short section that information, while painful, seemed to be too much detail (imagine all the other details one could insert, then it would no longer be a summary).

For the Beit Lahia article there were also two main points:

1. You adopted a narrative framing it as an intentional massacre, however that view is seriously contested, and wasn't accepted in the manner you presented it for the main entry (Gaza beach blast).
2. The list of victims' names doesn't belong because this is an article about the town, with only the briefest mention of the Gaza beach blast. That main article contains an even more detailed list, since that is the place to cover it.

Note that in both cases I preserved parts of your edit (Arab nationalism, Yasser) I hope that I was able to ease your concerns, but if you have any more questions, feel free to ask again. Re: Shagor History

Hello again,

I noticed your message on Ynhockey's Talk and I wanted to clarify why he [and I] have been removing that passage. The main issue is that any information added to an article, especially when potentially controversial, must be attributable to a reliable source. Otherwise there is no guarantee that our entries are factual, since anyone could add anything, even if they believe it to be true. Even if I witnessed something with my own eyes, there is no reason for you to take my word for it, and we call that original research. The best solution is to find the account published in a reputable source, and then there will be no problem adding it.

As for renaming, I suggest you read the naming conventions, as it is easy to make a mess by improperly moving things :-) In this specific case, you should find out if Bakri prefers a specific spelling, and if not, check to see if there is a standard spelling used by professional organisations like the IMDB. If not, you can try a Google test, or check the Arabic Manual of Style. I'll try to look into this if I get a few minutes. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have. To add to what Tewfik said, you also keep adding obviously pro-Palestinian sources (sometimes to ridiculous points, like palestineremembered.com and robincmiller.com, which definitely do not qualify under WP:RS), and hope to support wild stories about massacres based on these sites and books written by proven anti-Israel authors with no well-known research). You must understand that in order to include information in Wikipedia, it must not only be sourced, but the sources must be neutral and/or reputable. Pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli sources are accepted as long as they're reliable (to pro-Palestinian examples are The Guardian and Benny Morris).

I wish to reach a compromise with you, but please discuss major changes which you think may be contentious before making them, and find more reliable sources.

However, we came across a similar case before where the town rejected the government's spelling, so perhaps you can show that the town rejects that and instead embraces Rama? Got your message, and I made the move to Rame. I also saw your post, and PalestineRemembered can be helpful as it presents certain sourced information in an accessible manner. If and when information on the website is attributed to Morris or Khalidi (or whoever), then there is no reason not to cite the actual source. If information is not attributed to a such an RS, then it shouldn't be cited as it doesn't conform in and of itself to the policy on reliable sources as a self-published source not subject to any type of review. Would you have any objection to renaming the article to something unambiguous, e.g. az-Zakariya or Zakariyya (Arab village)? Can you tell me whether the Jewish town of Zekharya mentioned in the article is the same location as Kfar Zekharya which gave its name to Zekharyah Airbase, now Sedot Mikha Airbase? There are many acts out there which may count as militant attacks, such as assaulting soldiers on foreign soil or military bases, but suicide bombings against civilian buses? There is no way you can classify that as anything but Terrorism, and that is exactly what is refered in Operation Defensive Shield. Read the background. Boldface in transliterations

Please don't write Hebrew/Arabic transliterations in bold. This serves no purpose, clutters the text, and (especially in the case of Arabic) makes it much harder to read. The fact that the transliteration is in brackets next to the English word (which might be in bold if it's the subject of the article) makes it obvious that the Hebrew/Arabic text corresponds to it, even without the boldface. Good work, though Number 57 beat me by only a few minutes :-) I notice that you've added a lot of current villages to Category:Arab localities in Palestine 1948. My understanding is that it is supposed to be a reflection of List of villages depopulated during the Arab-Israeli conflict, and in any event, pretty much every current village existed in 1948, so it wouldn't really be helpful to include them alongside those that were depopulated, since the category would cease to be useful. I can't say I really understand the point, and this seems like overcategorisation to me. I don't think there is any precedent for such categorisation - imagine Jerusalem in categories relating to mandatory Palestine, Ottoman control, Mameluke control, etc. all the way back to the dawn of time :-) OTOH, depopulation is significant enough for a list, and even for a category. Starting new articles

It might be better if you created an article in your UserSpace along the lines of Al-Walaja and invited us to add to it, rather than creating a stub that will quickly be targetted for deletion. I can see that you are a genuine and highly productive editor [3] so I'm not trying to put you off. But the encyclopedia has sometimes suffered a blizzard of credible-sounding new articles related to this area, which have turned out to be fantasies. PalestineRemembered 21:22, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

What I said was just a suggestion. There is a danger that, if others do not/cannot add to your new articles, and they remain as little more than a stub then, in a few months or a year, they will be tidied away. Keeping them in your NameSpace means you launch them only after you've had the feedback and so forth. (When you've discovered how to get a directory listing of what you're keeping, do tell me!) I'm pretty sure if you click on the first link I provided aboveAl-Walaja you will be taken to a blank page to which you can add your text, and then save. This will then be in your own UserSpace, not in MainSpace. Create your article and then ask (selected?) others to help you with it. If nobody does so, and you're not in a position to turn it into a proper article yourself, then you'll know the project is not yet ready for this article to be included! I don't know how long it will be before this project page is auto-deleted, but it's probably quite a long time. I translated what was on the cc-by-sa license tag from the german wikipedia and I got this:

“ This file became under the conditions "of the Creative Commons denomination passing on under same conditions Germany"- license (shortened "CC-by-SA") in the version 2.0 publishes. ”

As far as I can tell, the two Abasans are just that - separate municipalities. What is sorely missing is an explanation of the system of local government, as while the source that I linked to on the muni template suggests that places like the Abasans are "B" level municipalities (towns?), it does not say so outright. Hi Al Ameer son. Sorry, but I don't really have time to look at it in depth over the next couple of days, but a couple of things I noticed from skim reading:

• The Arabic name in the intro does not appear to be the full one given in English - it misses out "Abdel Rahman" and then "Arafat"
• The second sentence in the "Formation of Fatah", Although he originally struggled to obtain a visa to Canada and later Saudi Arabia, Arafat was unsuccessful in both attempts does not appear to make sense - was he successful or unsuccessful? If the latter, it shouldn't start with "Although".

Fatah flag

I'm sorry, but while I respect your request, I'm not going to stick my foot into the flag issues of any of the Arab/Israel conflicts. While I understand your request, Palestine, while a dispossessed nation (and even that will no doubt have people arguing with me, but it is my belief), is not a sovereign state, and neither is using the Fatah flag, and as such, it would be incorrect for me to add the Fatah flag to the page in question, per Wikipedia flag rules. If anything, the logo should also be removed, but since the page is currently locked, and a sensitive subject, I'm not going to remove it (I would tend to remove all of them; though a graphic designer, there's a time for images, and I don't think 7 pixel high images actually add anything), and instead suggest you take this to the protecting admin, Xaosflux. --Thespian 14:12, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

The Assessment box is on the projects main or front page; It lists all of the articles of the project based on their quality (stub, GA, FA, etc.) and their importance (low, mid, high, top) to the project. Here are the additional stats:

• Matriculation % - 43.5%
• Weather averages - not available (moreover, I think CBS publishes only yearly averages and not monthly, correct me if I'm wrong)
• Apparently there's a Maccabi Bi'ina in Liga Bet (could be in Liga Gimel), also Beitar Bi'ina and a team in Deir al-Assad in Liga Gimel. Not sure how correct or up to date the information is, as it's from Wikipedia and not an external source.
• I think that the articles on each 'component' should be kept separate, although if you want to include the overall history inside Shagor, maybe you should merge the 3 articles into it, as in the Hebrew wikipedia. If I'm in the library in the coming days, I'll get you some info on each of the 3 villages.

1. No, as I said, it's from Wikipedia itself and it's not very reliable. I'm not sure that CBS even has info about sports, and if it does, it wouldn't be an authority probably.
2. No, one team is in just one league at a time, although in the low-level leagues (B and C), many teams jump between the leagues very often and it's hard to acquire up to date information. There's probably a league website will all the info you need but since I'm not into soccer (hockey FTW), I'm not really sure where to look.

About Sebastia (town)

It's an interesting suggestion, but I think it's better to retain the English spelling for the town which is Sebastia. It's only transliterated Sebastiya by those unfamiliar with its proper English name. It think it's important for us to use the most common, proper name in English, rather than the Arabic transliteration used only by those who are unaware of its English form.
