Kolkata civic administration

edit

Hi! Thanks a lot for your edits in the "civic administration" of Kolkata article. However, the edits need reference per WP:V. Can you please provide references for the edits? I tried to search on the web, but was not much successful to obtain adequate references for the information you provided in the article. Please help. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:56, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have long been a fan of the Wikipedia, but am new to the editing aspect of it. One consequence of that newness is that although I have been checking the main discussion page of the Kolkata article, I didn't know that I could receive messages on my individual talk page, hence didn't see the above from Dwaipayan till just now.

As regards my edits to the Civic administration section, I have heard the complete picture of my information only from one Kolkata lawyer who has much experience in both civil and criminal cases, and who has naturally had to become familiar with jurisdictions within Kolkata. However, I have found corroboration for all the information he gave me; from each of the following sources I found corroboration for some of the details of that information:

- another very knowledgeable Kolkata citizen
- a Kolkata citizen who is also a KMC official
- various maps
- direct observation

As direct observation, for example, it is possible to observe that the police in most of Kolkata (i.e., in most of the KMC area) wear the white uniforms of the Kolkata Police (exception -- the police guarding the Writers' Building and other state buildings wear the khaki uniforms of the West Bengal police), while the police in the southern and eastern wards of the KMC area wear the khaki uniforms of the West Bengal police. At places along the EM Bypass south of Science City, signs announcing the jurisdiction of the South 24 Parganas police are displayed; yet that area receives the municipal services of the KMC.

As regards the various people from whom I have learned about Kolkata, I have not asked their permission to quote them by name, and to do so might not serve any purpose anyway since their communications were purely verbal and they have not published anything. As another consequence of being new to editing, I am not very familiar yet with all the Wikipedia's content standards. Some of my edits, I now realize, might not be adequately documented, and some might qualify as "original research". Nevertheless, all the information that I provided should be public information that is not very obscure, though it might not be available on the web. For example, the northern and western boundaries of South 24 Parganas District must be accessible information (showing that S 24 P District overlaps with the KMC area), but one might have to go to the district headquarters in Alipore to get official documentation of that information. I will try to get better documentation, but don't know how much time I can budget for that. I appreciate Dwaipayan's efforts to find documentation, and I invite others to try as well.

This map – http://www.mapsofindia.com/maps/westbengal/westbengal-district.htm – is very sketchy, but it shows that Kolkata District is a very small area and that it lacks the eastward protrusion (a few kilometres east of Chingrighata) that is conspicuous on any map of the KMC area.

I have heard that the KMC is preparing a definitive book on themselves, which hopefully will answer all jurisdictional questions. I will be watching for that book.

I was concerned that the Kolkata article before editing might, for example, give the incorrect impression that the Kolkata Police are the only police functioning in the KMC area.

I have now made a correction regarding "the Kolkata Police's entire area", and provided a reference for that corrected information.

Hi! great effort. One thing, the resources/references need not be web references. In can be any book/publications/news reports etc. Indeed, it is extremely tough to get references for the info you have added in Kolkata article. Maybe only records in govt. offices would corroborate, and those are very difficult to get (given the time constraint we have).
Anyway, thanks a lot. And, welcome again. Enjoy your stay in Wikipedia! Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 08:47, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dear Dwaipayan,

I have prepared a map that illustrates and I think clarifies the "adjacent areas" and also other matters of jurisdiction as posted in the Civic administration section by me and others. I would like to post this map on the Kolkata Discussion page in order to first get feedback from others. However, I am not sure if it is possible to post such an image (a .jpg file) on the Discussion page. Consulting the Wikipedia Help pages, I have not been able to find a way to do this. Can you please advise me how to post this .jpg on the Discussion page, or otherwise bring it to the attention of you and other editors? Thanks.

Map

edit

First you have to upload the map in wikipedia at Wikipedia:Upload. Let's suppose you name the jpg map as 123mymap.

In the discussion page of Kolkata, create a section named "discussion on map" (or something like that), and place the map there (by writing [[Image:123mymap.jpg| thumb| the proposed map]]), and add text whatever you want to discuss.

You can go to edit mode of anu section of Kolkata article how images are placed. And yes, images can be placed in discussion pages. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:15, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
