Visual editor edit

Hi again Afewthings. I'm going to strongly recommend that you stop editing with the "Visual Editor" and switch immediately to the Source Editor. People who try to maintain a wiki career using the Visual Editor usually have a very hard time adapting to Wikipedia culture and understanding what's going on. They usually switch to source editing at some point, after having wasted a lot of time not learning to use it. Much of the reason you can't follow what I and Hoary have been doing to and contributing to your article, and the reason we have had to spend so much time cleaning it up, is because of your use of the visual editor. The Wikipedia Adventure also makes much more sense using source editing. You also learn to post correctly on talkpages by nesting your replies correctly with colons (which so far you haven't learned to do because the visual editor doesn't show them). Anyway, please consider it if you wish to stick around Wikipedia for any length of time. Sincerely, Softlavender (talk) 06:07, 3 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

OK. Had no idea using the visual editor might be so consequential. Perhaps I've jumped the gun on editing in general, I need to spend a lot more time looking at the source editing to figure out how it works, so recommendation will be taken. I certainly wouldn't attempt to edit an item someone has already posted. I did look through the little Wikipedia 'adventure' you posted, thanks, but of course, it doesn't really cover much in detail. I think I'll stop work on this item now; I added a couple of photos at someones suggestion, but probably in the wrong spot. I'll just submit it now for editors, see what is recommended and leave it there. I'll try and find a place to practice source editing and see the results, and if I spin my wheels for too long I'll pass on the 'career' thing ha ha. Wikipedia isn't as WYSIWYG as I thought and I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Appreciate your coaching, cheers,Afewthings (talk) 06:54, 3 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for File:Bert Powsey world's greatest diver Margate Dreamland.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Bert Powsey world's greatest diver Margate Dreamland.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 07:30, 3 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

In your description of this and the other two files, you unfortunately confuse two matters: the copyright status of the photograph, and whether the use of a still-copyright photo would be "fair". One of the files is dated 1905 (and certainly the headgear of the spectators makes it clear that the photograph predates 1926), which in turn means that it's not only in the public domain in the nation, the Youkay, where it originated (which is necessary), but also in the public domain in the nation, the Youess, where the Wikimedia servers are located (which is necessary too). Because this file meets both these requirements, I added to it: {{PD-US-expired-abroad|pdsource=yes}}{{PD-UK|commons}} (my edit). If you have reason to believe that the Margate photo (or the Southport photo) predates 1926, please add this reasoning to the file, add the same couple of templates to it, and remove from it the template warning of impending deletion. (If you can't show that it predates 1926, then you're going to have to claim "fair use"; but unfortunately the requirements for such a claim are a lot more stringent than most people would suppose.) -- Hoary (talk) 23:28, 3 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Now fixed: see my comment in a thread above. -- Hoary (talk) 23:28, 3 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
yes I botched that picture upload sorry. All new to me. I've got ahead of myself. Thanks for re-adding and tagging that photo. I'm going to spend the next little while playing in sandbox and figuring out how to write an item adequately in the source, and if I can't figure it out I'll lay low. I will review all the tips and advice while doing so that you and softlavender have provided Afewthings (talk) 04:27, 4 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Another diver edit

Mr/Ms Things, I hope that your quietness is only temporary. Quite by chance, today I landed on one Frank Gadsby: right up your street! -- Hoary (talk) 12:35, 30 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello again Hoary, yes it's been awhile. I had seen the item on It's that Man Again and Frank Gadsby's inspiration of the gag. I have photos of Frank in my files. I hope to do some more in future if no one else does; it would be nice to see a page on the Pier Diving phenomenon in general and from it link to some of the performers, even if they are just 'stubs', so that others might add more info that accumulates. I think that the recurring cameos of 'the diver' in the radio show is indicative of how widespread the appreciation of seaside divers was in society, even coining euphemisms in relatively widespread usage. Hope you are well and thanks for saying hello and reminding me of this. I'm writing this in source but it's been awhile so I'm probably getting the protocols all wrong. Best Afewthings --
