Wendell H. Ford TFA edit

Hello - I've chosen Ford's article as the TFA on September 8 to mark his 90th birthday on September 8. Blurb is at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/September 8, 2014, if you want to tweak it. Best wishes, BencherliteTalk 19:10, 27 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Nice to meet another one on the Main page, on his 90th birthday! I recently wrote one for what I thought was the subjects 80th, - but my poor math: it was his 91st, DYK ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:36, 8 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thank you; it was a great choice by Bencherlite, and a date I would have overlooked. Not nearly as active at TFA (or on Wikipedia in general) as I used to be, but I'm still working on a couple of major rewrites to run the DYK/GA/FA gauntlet. Thank you. I'm trying to focus right now on aspects of Sartory's life not related to the murder. Goodness knows we can flesh that out later! There is a bit in that article that could be useful. Just seems a shame for the whole thing to get scrapped when there seems to be the hint of notability to the man himself, beyond his tragic demise. We'll see. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 18:01, 23 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Understood. I saw this bit (see pp. 4-5) last week, but I'm not sure a work-related newsletter qualifies as an independent source. - Location (talk) 20:31, 23 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
That's a good find. I'm actually wondering if it's considered a U.S. government publication. It comes from a government web site, anyway. If so, we could harvest the photo of Sartory for the article as public domain, assuming the wiki-article is kept. Either way, I think it should be a reliable source for what the invention actually does, and that might help establish that Sartory "made significant impact in [his] scholarly discipline, broadly construed", as required by WP:ACADEMIC. Thanks for sharing. Please drop me a note if you find anything else relevant. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 20:56, 23 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Same newsletter from two years earlier (i.e. 1975), just a trivial mention in the bottom right-hand corner of page 1: [1]. I'm afraid that it doesn't provide anything new. - Location (talk) 22:23, 23 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ran across this guy... edit

Monroe Edwards - supposedly the son of an Amos Edwards of Kentucky and relative of a bunch of Kentucky bigwigs. Monroe though was quite the bad boy - forger, swindler, and slave trader. Turns out he in a "trial of the century" trial in 1842 and defended by John J. Crittenden and Thomas Francis Marshall (among others - including William M. Evarts). I'll be working up Monroe Edwards (I stumbled across him because George Wilkes, an early horse racing writer in America, wrote a sensational biography of Edwards. Do you have the books on Crittenden still? And do they mention anything about Edwards? Ealdgyth - Talk 14:46, 17 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Kirwan's John J. Crittenden: The Struggle for the Union would be the most likely (only?) candidate. I don't have the book in my possession at the moment, but both of the libraries closest to me have it, so getting it wouldn't be a problem. Searching Google's snippet view of the book doesn't turn up any mentions, though. Several Edwardses appear in the index, but not Monroe or Amos. Sorry.
Crittenden is well-known for lots of stuff, so the Edwards trial might not have registered on the radar for most biographers. Marshall, however, is less well-known, and at some point, I ran across a reference to a book called A Handful of Bitter Herbs; Reminiscences of Thomas Francis Marshall, 1801-1964, Great Kentucky Orator. Perhaps there would be a mention there. Unfortunately, no Google preview (not even a snippet) and no copies near me.
If I get a chance, I'll also check some electronic library resources I have access to as well. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 17:48, 17 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
I've pulled everything from JSTOR ... and there are some things through older newspapers. Turns out this guy inspired some of Herman Melville's writings in Bartleby the Scrivener also ... got a couple of books on that that are heading my way. I just ordered the Crittenden biography through ILL... we'll see what shows up. Ealdgyth - Talk 18:11, 17 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Good luck. Sounds remarkably like the Beauchamp–Sharp Tragedy, which inspired Edgar Allan Poe's Politian. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 18:37, 17 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Anytime that the Dictionary of American Biography describes someone as "forger, swindler, slave smuggler"... you know you've got to research the guy more... Ealdgyth - Talk 19:01, 17 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Got anything cooking for FAC? --Laser brain (talk) 15:08, 1 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, my on-wiki time has been way down since my younger daughter was born last year. I made a run with Constitution Square Historic Site back in 2012, but it failed to get enough reviews, per usual. I still think it's probably in good enough shape to pass – although it may need a few updates since the park was undergoing some changes after the county government took it over. I placed my pursuit of a Governors of Kentucky featured topic on hold as well, although I considered nominating Lawrence Wetherby, since I think it's pretty complete. I should also probably get cracking on Steve Beshear, since he's wrapping up his term next year and is term-limited. Will need to figure out who the likely nominees are to succeed him so I can move them toward GA status, or I'll lose the Governors of Kentucky good topic after next year's election. I recently finished my rewrite of basketball-hero-turned-political-villain Richie Farmer, and it could probably pass FA as well, but I plan to take it to GA first, since I'd be in line for a FOUR award on him. What do you think about another run with Constitution Square or a first run for Wetherby? Do either look like they would pass to you?
BTW, welcome back. I was really bummed to see you drop out of the project, but I'm glad to see your hiatus was temporary. Thanks for your continued interest in my work. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 15:23, 1 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the welcome back. I think Constitution Square and Wetherby are both well-positioned, although the review traffic is a challenge as always. I am certainly available to provide reviews, and you can probably hit up the previous reviewers in the case of Constitution Square. Both look mature and in good shape, from a casual pass. --Laser brain (talk) 15:54, 1 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion edit

I was wondering if you might want to work together, at some point, on Richard Mentor Johnson, which I think would be a really fun article to get to FA. I don't have the Kentucky resources you do, but I bet I can cobble together a fair amount of info on him out of various books plus online stuff.--Wehwalt (talk) 23:00, 1 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Once upon a time, I did enough work to get RMJ to GA status. I had intended to go on to FA status, but the sources left so much uncertainty about some major issues in his life that I gave up. Having someone to bounce things off of might make it easier to sort through some of that. I suggest you might also reach out to Spacini (talk · contribs). I had some conversations with him about RMJ some time ago, and he had done some research about him in college, if I remember correctly. He and I have done some very basic collaborating in the past on Kentucky-related stuff. I think getting RMJ to FA status is a good idea. I'll help as much as I can, subject to work and family constraints.
One issue I know needs addressing is the incident at Bryan's Station. The sources I used talk about it as fact, but Kevin Myers (talk · contribs) later found that the Kentucky Encyclopedia entry on Bryan's Station refers to the event as "a popular story long believed true but now relegated to legend". It does not elaborate as to why it is now relegated to legend. I'd like to find a way to clean this up. Spacini says there are many such events in RMJ's life. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 14:46, 2 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
That could make it difficult. I will do some online research on him. No hurry.--Wehwalt (talk) 21:06, 3 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi, noticed this article at FAC and had a quick curiosity peek. In the section 'Charges filed' there is a sentence "Farmer pled not guilty to all five federal charges on April 25, 2014." Given the chronology of the story and the date of the citation should that not be April 25, 2013? --Wolbo (talk) 22:42, 14 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Wolbo: Good catch! Thank you. I fixed that. I hope you will be able to complete a full review at FAC. I would like to have your comments. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 16:13, 15 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

I believe my Article was notable enough this time edit

Hello. I believe my Article was notable enough this time however it is deleted without giving me any satisfactory explanation. The procedure i have followed: Make draft, join chat and spend 1 whole day to edit and compose excellent article based on suggestion and edits by experts at the chat, submit draft, draft accepted, draft reviewed and edited by WikiProject_Video_games editor and completely published. Then i ask chat again about isn’t this too much edit? then primefac opens speedy delete then it is deleted without giving me any explanation in matter of minutes. If you check the issue i appreciate ty very much : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MonsterMMORPG . And there were not any discussion it was deleted immediately. One more notice: I checked same genre games articles and majority of them have way more less authority references and even some have 0 references. Thank you very much for your help. Mugshots edit

In your GA or FA review for Richie Farmer, you mentioned looking for a mugshot of him for the article. I've been writing one about someone else who is in federal prison now. Do you know where I could find such a mugshot? And are they in the public domain as works of the federal government? Thanks, Coemgenus (talk) 22:30, 10 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Coemgenus: Last question first - because I assumed that a federal mugshot would be public domain as a work of the federal government, I began looking for the mugshot, figuring any other free-use photo of Farmer probably doesn't exist because he's so young. I'm no copyright expert, but I don't know why that PD logic wouldn't hold. As to where/how I looked, I literally just Googled his name and "mugshot". When that came up empty, I searched for mugshot websites. Didn't turn up anything there, either. I also did an inmate lookup on the web site of the prison where he is being held. Still no luck. I hope you have more success on your search. Thanks for your review of Farmer's article, btw. Looks like it has enough supports to pass FAC; just waiting on a close. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 13:31, 11 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, that's roughly the same pattern of research I followed, with the same results. I'll keep digging and see what comes up. Good luck with Farmer! --Coemgenus (talk) 13:38, 11 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
