Constructive vs. Nonconstructive efforts

I've recently found this and it really irritated me. I don't intend to waste my time by protesting against the decision, but I think this is not constructive trend for several reasons. First, we lost one of our active friends[1] who made not only had a lot of articles but also a task force for Hadith as well as some other task forces. Second, we lost many articles easily and now we should make them again due to the fact that most of them are important issues. Finally, all of the discussions[2] didn't lead to any guideline for hadith articles and now we should start from the beginning Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Islam#Hadith of warning.--Seyyed(t-c) 16:00, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Biman Bangladeshi Airlines

Hi, you removed the hijacking details saying it was flight GMG042. The source says BG042, although it has been changed from a hijack to an inflight disturbance. What is your source for GMG042? Hiya, the press have had a field day with this newstory and goes to show that some of them can't be trusted to do any research. The airline involved is GMG Airlines a private Bangladeshi airline (unlike state-owned Biman). Here are a few links to the actual story in the Bangladeshi papers: [3], [4], [5]

Wa-alaikumus salam, yeah - been a bit busy with real world stuff lately so haven't been able to do much here. I've made a comment on the SSP page and looked long and hard to find the articles with anonymous edits by him, but can't remember which ones they were. I remember trying to track his socks and did come across his use of IPs in both Lebanon and US and came to the conclusion he was based in Lebanon but used proxies in US but since he got block pretty quickly abandoned that line of investigation. Irrespective of whether it's him or not, just try and stay clear of getting involved in an edit war and engage in discussions and make use of a sandbox to progress the articles in dispute. Compact navigation script

Hi AA. I came across your script today after being forced to get rid of SixTabs due to its inability to work with Lightmouse's date script. I was wondering if it would be possible to add an extra pull-down field to the discussion tab, where you could pick "new section" instead of "edit lead", which isn't really necessary on talk pages unless you're playing with Wikiproject templates. Sylheti language

As you say Sylheti is not a dialect, but if you view many sources it is regarded as a dialect and not a language on its own. Because it shares many similarities with Bengali, about 70 to 80% similar. Plus you would know that many people may ask 'do you speak Bengali' other than 'Sylheti'. Mohsin (talk) 11:22, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

If the fact is (as you agree) that it is a language, then the articles need to state that. It is regarded by the international organisations on linguistics as a language, has it's own Unicode IDs and ISO codes so therefore it is a language. If some parts of the world regard it as a dialect, then this also needs to be mentioned but the factual statements needs to come first. If you look at the ethnologue reference, there is no mention of it being a dialect. The STAR reference makes it clear it's not a dialect "There are two things that make Sylheti an important language in its own right, and not a colloquial or 'peasant' corruption of Bengali as some have alleged.". I am unable to see any references which support the theory that it is a dialect and if they exist then this needs to be referred to in the article although I am aware that in general a lot of non-sylhetis in Bangladesh want to think of it as a dialect but that doesn't make it so. → AA ^(talk) — 16:35, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I see you have reverted. We have decided what todo and that is to have my edits but without the removal of the history. Could you please make these changed to the infobox to match WP:AIRLINES standards:

• Fleet size = 12 (+14 orders)
• Key people = Air Commodore (Retd.), Md Zakiul Islam (CEO) (with the <'br'> minus the ' inbetween names)

Hi AA, I noticed you were able to add pictures of Biman's new Boeing aircraft. I was wondering, how did you get these images? I would like to upload pictures of Iraqi Airways new CRJ-900's and one of their Boeing 737-700's, but I do not know the process, so I was wondering if you could upload pictures of the following Iraqi Airways aircraft:

Hi, I have a friend who's involved with Biman and has "behind the scenes" access in Bangladesh to their aircraft. He had taken the photos and I helped him upload them for use on Wikipedia. You can only upload images that you have taken/own the copyright for so if the images you are referring to are you own, then just click on the Upload file link and add them. But if you found them on the net, then you cannot upload since you do not hold the copyright. Hope that helps - if you need anymore info, let me know. Arabic transliteration

AA's edit summary "Wikipedia uses 'ad-Din' etc. and not 'al' " implies that Wikipedia has a policy on this issue, and I know of no such thing. If you start at ad-Din and follow the links given there, you will discover that there is a wide variety of practice. Any attempt to standardise should have been made, if at all, several years ago, when WP was small. To standardise now would be hopelessly laborious. Modern names of this form usually have a transliteration chosen and used by the bearer of the name, and in that case policy is certainly to follow that choice. For medieval names we ought to follow the form used in the best sources. Quite often those sources vary amongst themselves, and in those cases some guidance for decision might be useful. If this is worth discussing, perhaps we can continue at Talk:ad-Din. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 20:17, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

I don't have strong opinions one way or another and treat each article in the same manner as british vs american spelling (i.e. whatever is appropriate or common). The Saladin article uses ad-Din when referring to him and all the names in the infobox so any change should be discussed. Hope that clarifies. Ranger Peak

So we really have to go through the hassle of an AFD to remove a page that obviously goes against guidelines, just because of one user who either doesn't know or doesn't care that the guideline exists? There's absolutely nothing controversial here. A disambiguation page that links to only one topic is not a disambiguation page. As WP:D spells out: "Disambiguation is required whenever, for a given word or phrase on which a reader might use the "Go button", there is more than one existing Wikipedia article to which that word or phrase might be expected to lead." That is why we have a speedy-delete template that clearly and objectively spells out that "removing a disambiguation page that only points to a single article" is a reason to speedy-delete. It would be more beneficial to Wikipedia to create the stubs for the other two redlinks that were on the disambig page rather than remove it. Unless "Ranger Peak" is a well known term that refers to the Wyoming one over all others, it is better to have a disambig page so anyone searching can see there is a list and select the appropriate one. At Talk:North South University? There is an ongoing dispute regarding whether the article should include information about a recent sexual harassment incident. And apparently, some new/unregistered users are being accused by other users as "agents" of the university administration. So, it complicates the whole scenario.

Hi Axel, no bother at all and I am happy to explain. The article was tagged under the speedy deletion criteria A7 (No indication of importance). This is a Wikipedia policy which says that if the subject does not meet notability guidelines, then it can be deleted. You can review the specific guidelines for websites to understand what is required for a website to be notable. Hope that helps but if you have any further queries, don't hesitate to ask :). Reverts on Biman Bangladesh Airlines

Survey on gender

Hi! I'm Liria Veronesi (User:Akoha77) and, together with Paolo Massa (User:Phauly), I'm starting an empirical research on "Gender and votes in requests for adminship". For this reason, we need to know the gender of Wikipedians who were candidated to become admins.

We tried looking for the templates User:UBX/male and User:UBX/female but only 4 admins use it. We also used the API for getting the gender field in the profile but, out of 1744 admins, only around 400 have filled this field. But we would benefit from a larger coverage, i.e. possibly knowing the gender of 100% of candidates.

So, after asking for advise to 3 admins and receiving 2 positive replies (1 and 2), we decided to try to ask directly to Wikipedians.

Thus, would you be so kind to write your gender [Male / Female / Other], together with a text comment if you want, on my talk page at User_talk:Akoha77? If you prefer to send me this information privately, you can send me an email, the information will be kept confidential and never shared.

MSU Interview

Dear AA,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Is this possible to rename article page? The article M. A. G. Osmani refers to a great national personality of Bangladesh. So the page should contain the full name of him e.g. Muhammad Ataul Gani Osmani.

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year).
