2008 Oklahoma Sooners football team edit

Recruiting edit

On 2007-08-24 Herman Mitchell, a recruit from Houston, Texas who had verbally committed to play for the Sooners during the 2008 season, was shot and killed at an apartment complex in Houston. Mitchell was a first-team all-district linebacker for the Westfield High School Mustangs and had more than 110 tackles in the 2006 season.[1] As news of the death spread, an OU booster started a fund with the goal of helping to defray the cost of Mitchell's funeral. After raising about $4,500, he was informed by the University that donating the money would be a violation of NCAA rules prohibiting financial assistance to recruits and their families because Mitchell's younger brother also played high school football. The University applied for a waiver from the NCAA due to the extreme circumstances surrounding the fund and the request was granted on 2007-08-30.[2]
