KIWIX and EDIT - A - THON edit

The project is focused on connecting the unconnected in schools in Ashanti Region in Ghana and beyond.Teachers in various schools would be trained on using kiwix to access wikipedia offline.They would also be taken through using wikipedia for lessons and accessing information relative to teach a discipline.Students would be introduced to digital citizenship and information literacy.The project is focused on decolonizing education and access to information where there is inadequate internet infrastructure.

The project also seeks to organize community edit-a-thons for participants in the region.

GOAL edit

The project is using Kiwix to support students in developing skills about:

  • Information literacy;
  • internet ethics and search pattern;
  • critical thinking;
  • collaboration;
  • Research.

Teachers would use kiwix to :

  • Teach in the classroom with digital devices;
  • assist students with information search.


Increase community engagement on wikimedia projects through edit-a-thons,campaigns and advocacy. Tain kiwix facilitators for more installations.

ACTIVITIES edit


  • There is usually a presentation on Wikipedia 101 for about 25 minutes.This is followed by a focus group discussion on Information Literacy that takes about 30 minutes and the groups do a short presentation on what they learnt to improve their problem solving and collaborative skills a prerequisite

for being an editor.

  • Editors are introduced to the monthly thematic areas and also ideas are welcomed from new and old.

As part of our advocacy framework and strategy in being ambassadors for kiwix particularly in the Senior High School Levels.

  • This is an offsite project that editors are trained on Kiwix ,offline wikipedia,and getting partnering senior high schools with computers to do installations and train students on information literacy.

There are outreach Kiwix projects in some selected Senior High Schools.

PROBLEM TREE edit

Effects : Majority of students don't want to use any information on wikipedia. Most use wikipedia as their first source of getting information but would not admit it.

Problem : Wikipedia is not credible and that it is even associated with Wikileaks since their generic name Wiki is the same.

Causes : Mainstream media and Academia are negative about Wikipedia with the idea that anybody can contribute. Inadequate information on what Wikipedia stands for how information get on and are verifies


Effects : Low enthusiasm of editors to contribute and participation in Edit a thons

Problem : There are inadequate content from Africa on wikipedia and wikimedia commons

Causes : There are misconceptions on Wikipedia by authorities and Open Knowledge.


Effects : Students do not get means to access information without internet and textbooks are expensive

Problem : Inadequate Internet infrastructure and high cost of internet

Causes : Educators have no idea about wikipedia and how effectively it can help with students.

Objective Activities Impact
To provide an alternative to internet infrastructure for information access through Kiwix There is organised seminar for teachers on Digital Citizenship and the role it plays in Education in the 21st Century.Teachers are also introduced to Wikipedia 101 through workshops with breakout sessions in the schools that will have kiwix training. Students get access to information where the internet is available however information can still be accessed without the internet.The dependence on teachers notes and textbooks will have a better and open alternative to promote learning.
Evaluation
Survey questions to test teachers' understanding of Wikipedia 101 and Digital Citizenship.Students demonstration on the use of Kiwix on digital devices;smartphones and Computers.
