Pieter Uyttenhove is full professor in Theory and History of Urbanism and was Head of the Department of Architecture and Urbanism at Ghent University until 2014. He studied urban planning at the Institut d’urbanisme de Paris (IUP, Paris XII) and engineer-architect at Leuven University. He made his doctorate at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris in 1999. He is adviser of doctoral research in 19th and 20th century theory and history of urbanism : the imagery of landscape during the first half of the 20th century ; Paul Otlet’s analogous spaces of knowledge ; the history of modern road infrastructure in Belgium ; the development of landscape design in Flanders ; the narratology of urban design and urbanism, etc. Current doctoral research under his direction deals with Cold War heritage ; the planning and design of green infrastructure, etc. Co-director of the UGent laboratory for urbanism Labo S, he has developed and directed in recent years research on urban design, heritage and landscape, and on topics as (chrono)photography ; urbanized landscapes ; urbanism and heritage of First World War landscapes and villages.
He also taught at Leuven University, Ecole nationale supérieure d'architecture de Clermont-Ferrand and Columbia University, and gave numerous international lectures.
He published in numerous national and international periodicals as A+, A+U, Archis, De Architect, European Planning Studies, Faces, L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui, Landscape Research, Library Trends, Planning Perspectives, Storia Urbana, Techniques & Architecture, Urbanisme, Perspectives, etc. He is author of several books, e.g. Beaudouin et Lods (Éditions du Patrimoine, Paris, 2012); Stadland België. He was curator of exhibitions in the Centre Pompidou and the Pavillon de l’Arsenal in Paris, and of ‘Recollecting Landscapes 1904-1980-2004’ in the Museum of Contemporary Arts (SMAK) in Ghent, 2006.
