Robert "Bob" Klein (born October 3, 1964) is the 26th District Attorney of Susquehanna County. He took over the position of district attorney on January 4, 2016 as the successor to Jason J. Legg who served as district attorney from 2004-2016. Robert Klein will be up for re-election in 2019.
Career edit
Robert Klein was with the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office since 2000 and was the head of the Homicide by Motor Vehicle and DUI units until 2016 when he was elected. In addition, he was a Special Assistant County Solicitor for the Involuntary Commitment of Sexually-Violent Predators since 2004. Klein graduated from Binghamton University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. He graduated with his Juris Doctor Degree from Widener University where he was selected as the most promising litigator. While at Widener he interned at the United States Attorney’s Office in Binghamton, New York, and while interning he argued successfully before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Klein has handled thousands of cases involving virtually every type of crime, including assaults, arsons, DUIs, thefts, robberies, homicides, drugs, property crimes, financial crimes, sexual offenses, and child abuse cases. He has led investigative grand juries as well as been the lead prosecutor on drug investigations. He headed up the Lackawanna County Task Force on Synthetic Drugs, which lead to the seizure and forfeiture of money and synthetic drugs valued at over one million dollars. Klein was the first prosecutor in the state to utilize ACT 21 for the commitment of Juvenile Sexual Offenders and has been successful in having these violent predators recommitted for the past ten years. Klein is also assigned to the Community Prosecution team which is responsible for addressing community issues before they reach the level of criminal activity. He has worked with every school throughout the county leading proactive approaches to keeping our students safe. He has taught prosecutors statewide for the Pennsylvania District Attorney’s Association on drug investigations and sexual offenders. He has also taught for the Pennsylvania DUI Association on numerous areas of DUI and Homicide by Motor Vehicle issues. He has instructed local and state police on case law updates as well as new criminal trends and investigative techniques, policies, and procedures. He has also taught at several local colleges and been a guest speaker at schools, business organizations, and community organizations on topics ranging from internet safety, synthetic drugs, child safety, community issues, and various criminal activities, including gangs. Klein has been in charge of numerous projects, including the revamping of the Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition program, which has reduced the amount of non-compliance, directly reducing the need for additional court hearings. He also led the development of the groundbreaking movie “The Cost of Two Beers,” which has been viewed by thousands of students across the country, launching the “One and Done ” initiative. He has been recognized with numerous awards from business, professional, and community organizations, including the Child Advocate of the Year Award and Leader of the Year.
