Reading International Solidarity Centre (or RISC) is a development education centre in Reading, Berkshire.[1] The centre also houses a shop and café.[2]
Activities edit
Staff of the centre have been involved in producing resources for use in global citizenship education.[3]
Activism edit
The centre is somewhat known for hosting events which may attract activists. Some peace campaigners attending the centre in July 2011 to watch a screening of the nuclear proliferation documentary Countdown to Zero were placed under surveillance by officers of the Thames Valley Police (TVP) and the Ministry of Defence Police.[4] Speaking after the event, TVP chief constable Sara Thornton said, "Officers were also tasked with conducting general observations in the Reading area to help us ascertain the likelihood of any protest activity... with hindsight I would have preferred for them not to have attended the event."[4]
