Microsoft Research Cambridge was founded in 1997 by Roger Needham and now numbers over 100 employees. It maintains close ties to the University of Cambridge.

Following the 1997 general election, Tony Blair "actively courted Microsoft" in connection with his schools initiative.[1] In return, Microsoft and Roger Needham founded Microsoft Research Cambridge.[1]
