User:Trevj/Articles which have subsumed others

Articles which have subsumed others is a list of articles where contents have been merged in, with the contents of original articles on (notable) subjects being redirected to the parent. I intend to further investigate and tidy some of these over time. If you'd like to help, please go ahead and resurrect any articles you feel to be notable. If you have any questions, please leave a note on my talk page. Thanks.

History edit

While editing Cambridge Cable, I discovered that NTL had been merged into Virgin Media. NTL was a notable company in its own right, so I sought to discuss the possible restoration of the article. After doing a little further research, I came to the conclusion that some (well-meaning) editors have perhaps been rather too keen in applying certain Policies and may not discuss their intended actions beforehand. Unfortunately, the results are sometimes to the detriment of the encyclopedia and its readers.

In some cases, editors may be dissuaded from continuing to contribute to Wikipedia. This is especially important where newcomers are concerned.

Proposed procedure edit

  • If notability is likely:
    1. In simple cases, restore the article (including an explanatory note in the edit summary)
    2. Tag the restored article for notability, tense, etc.
    3. Put a note on the talk page of both articles (and any related WikiProjects)
  • If unsure about likely notability:
    1. Initiate a WP:SPLIT discussion
    2. Invite members of any related WikiProjects to join the discussion
  • If notability is unlikely and the main article originator/editor is still active, place a note on their talk page and/or userfy the article.

Avoiding future occurrences edit

  • IMHO discussion should be encouraged before deciding to redirect such articles

Article list edit

Parent articles are listed first, with children below. Further children may be found by checking edit histories of redirects to the parent.
