Tips edit

There is a set of about 90 Wikipedia:Special:xyz pages - e.g. Wikipedia:Special:MostLinked. See:

  • Help:Special page for a neat list, with descriptions,
  • Special:SpecialPages for the list you get when you click anytime on 'Tools > Special pages' on the left-hand side of any WP page (without descriptions), or
  • a full search list here.

Templates edit

Here's a colour. Here's another.

Adding {{Image requested}} to an article's talk page produces:

See Template:Image requested for documentation re using the above & allied media-requesting templates.
However, it seems best to use extra parameters, as in this suggested improvement.

Get emoticons like   by using various images at Emoticons (or smiley for short). And, you can make them bigger:
However, others may be better, e.g. this 'blushing' one:  . And there are many more useful [emot]icons here.

Archive my Talk page   Done (Use template:Done to produce this Done + tick). Also, icons like this -   Note: - are described here.

Warning msgs. , and again in a colourful table.

Wiktionary links. See also {{wiktionary redirect}}, as in the WP article brickbat,

and over 1,000 others also in Category:Redirects to Wiktionary.

Some more:

AnyUserName gives: AnyUserName (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)

Template:Archiveme adds friendly msg. to talk pages with >10 sections.

Can we rid WP of "will likely"? See User:Trafford09/AWB-WL. (Note use of template:search link.)

Template:flatlist ...

  • enables you to put a
  • in
  • between
  • parts
  • of a list
  • like this & many other examples above!

Template:Colour enables you to make text green, purple! or indeed any colour.

See Web_colors#X11_color_names for the whole range of colours.
(Don't use {{!xt2|make text red}}, as it does so on a new, indented line.)

See the disambiguation page Ubuntu, where both the following templates are used. Both templates have further parameters:

  • {{Lookfrom}} searches for page titles which start with given words, and
  • {{Intitle}} searches for pages which contain given words anywhere in their title.

Template:dynamic list produces this:

Sometimes people cite references even in Talk pages, which causes problems unless one uses say template:reflist-talk; see Talk:Go (game)#Women_players for an example of its usage.

Today, there are 859 Administrators - see Help:Magic_words for more.

See these (as used in AIUI):

To warn not to include WP:Red links, see Template:Editnotices/Page/List of Argentines. See also WP:TIPS, and then in this order:

Wikipedia:Suggestededit-add 1.0 explains why some edit summaries have this (un?)helpful summary, and ...

... mw:Suggested edits sheds further light on that, and ...

... User_talk:Enterprisey#User_HHHHHYYYY shows when I queried a (ro)Bot expert regarding this, and ...

... User:Qwerfjkl kindly gave more info.. I guess that (talk page stalker) (talk page stalker) is well up on things wm: and (ro)Bots.

Using <nowiki> </nowiki> around text - e.g. <nowiki> {{Image requested}} </nowiki> - saves that text being interpreted by Wikipedia.

From any revision history page

On any page's revision history ( like https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Papers_(information_leaks)&action=history ), there is a line, near the top, like this: "External tools:

Find addition/removal (Alternate) Find edits by user (Alternate) Page statistics Pageviews Fix dead links".

If you click on Pageviews, you can get into https://xtools.wmflabs.org/ec/en.wikipedia.org/Trafford09 which is interesting.

Citations edit

Here's a video tutorial - hit play, then right-click for "full screen".
(Many thanks to the stalwart User:Chzz for this subsection.)

All articles on Wikipedia should have in-line, numbered references after facts, showing the 'reliable source' (a newspaper, book, etc.) where the information can be checked, so that all information is verifiable.

Here's an example of how to add references:

Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref>

He likes tea.<ref> Smith, John. "[http://foonews.com/Article42 Interview with Chzz]", Foo News, 1 April 2010. Retrieved 2011-05-22. </ref>

== References ==

{{reflist}}

That makes the references automatically display as small numbers[1] which will link to the details in the section titled == References == at the end. You can see that example in action here.
