Decision Education Foundation edit

Decision Education Foundation (DEF)[1] was founded in 2001 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Palo Alto, California to improve the lives of young people by empowering them with effective decision skills. They create and distribute educational materials including classroom curriculum, self-paced videos, teacher and advisor training, workshops for parents and educators, and custom-tailored classroom experiences. They offer various length workshops that engage young people in independent exercises and group activities designed to stimulate their problem solving, divergent thinking, and decision-making capacities. DEF provides educators with courses and curriculum in decision quality that are based around a framework for decision making, pioneered at the Stanford University School of Engineering[2] and the Strategic Decisions Group[3], an international management consultancy.

The Decision Education Foundation's mission is: "Improve the lives of young people by empowering them with effective Decision Skills."

Evaluation edit

Decision making is rarely taught in high school, even though effective decision making is an essential life skill and improved decision skills could benefit young people facing life-shaping decisions. While decision competence has been shown to correlate with better life outcomes, few interventions designed to improve decision skills have been evaluated with rigorous quantitative measures. A randomized study published in the peer reviewed journal PLOS -1[4] showed that integrating decision making into U.S. history instruction improved students’ history knowledge[5] and decision-making competence, compared to traditional history instruction. Thus, integrating decision training enhanced academic performance and improved an important, general life skill associated with improved life outcomes.

In another study, "A summary examination of the quality and efficacy of decision-making training using the most effective methods and resources available". The study was conducted by the Doerr Institute for New Leaders at Rice University[6] (The Institute). After an extensive survey of existing materials and courses, the Institute concluded that the model produced by the Decision Education Foundation was the best they could find[7]. [8]

Quality decisions help students engage in healthy behaviors. Effective decision making is an essential life skill that is rarely taught in a formal classroom setting. When students are taught how to make better decisions, their decisions improve, leading to better life outcomes. Therefore, DEF posits that students need opportunities to acquire and apply decision skills as a part of their education. The principles of decision science provide valuable guidance for a lifetime of decisions.

DEF also works to create awareness that decision competency is important to a well-rounded education (on par with literacy and numeracy).
