Gordon Lord Byron (28 March 2008–9 June 2020) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse.
Background edit
Gordon Lord Byron was a bay horse with no white markings bred in Ireland by Roland H Alder. As a foal he was consigned from the Owenstown Sttud to the Goffs sale in November 2008 and was bought for €2,000 by Jessica Cahalan, the secretary of the trainer Tom Hogan.[2] The plan was to "pinhook" the colt, meaning that he would be re-offered for sale at later date in the expectation of turning a profit on the transaction[3] but when he returned to the Goffs sales ring in the following year he failed to reach his reserve price of €5,000.[4] During his racing career he was owned by Morgan J Cahalan in partnership with Cyrus Poonawalla and was trained by Hogan at Nenagh, County Tipperary. Hogan made an attempt to offload the colt in early 2010 but Gordon Lord Byron was rejected by the sale organisers. One of the horse's quirks which may have deterred potential buyers was that he refused to walk and instead "nervously jig-jogged" when asked to move slowly.[3]
He was the best horse sired by Byron, a British stallion who recorded his biggest wins in the Mill Reef Stakes and Lennox Stakes.[5] Gordon Lord Byron's dam Boa Estrela, was an unraced daughter of the Queen Anne Stakes winner Intikhab. She was a descendant of the American broodmare Blazon who was the female-line ancestor of Barney Roy and a half-sister to both Exceller and Capote.[6]
Racing career edit
2010: two-year-old season edit
On 5 July 2010 Gordon Lord Byron made his racecourse debut in a maiden race over seven furlongs on good to firm ground at Roscommon Racecourse. Starting a 20/1 outsider he raced for a furlong before losing his action and was pulled up by his jockey Ben Curtis.[7] He was found to have sustained a fractured pelvis exiting the starting stalls and was off the track for over a year. Hogan explained "He was taken away in the horse ambulance and they asked whether we wanted him to be put down. I said ‘Definitely not’. We brought him home and stood him in a box packed with used car tires so he couldn't lay down, because if he did, he could stretch the fracture and that would have been curtains for him."[3]
2011: three-year-old season edit
Gordon Lord Byron had been gelded before he returned to the track on 16 July at the Curragh and finished last of the fourteen runners, more than fourteen lengths behind the winner in a maiden race. He was placed in maidens at Bellewstown, Killarney and Listowel before running fifth in a similar event at Cork on 15 October. For his four subsequent races that year Gordon Lord Byron was campaigned on the synthetic Polytrack surface at Dundalk Racecourse. The gelding recorded his first success in a six-furlong maiden on 28 October in which he was ridden by Wayne Lordan and won by half a length from the Jim Bolger-trained favourite Glor Na Mara at odds of 14/1.[8] He followed up by taking a handicap race over the same distance on 18 November, winning by a neck despite veering left a furlong from the finish.[9] In December he finished third in two handicaps over the same course and distance.
