The 2020 Cadillac DPi Clash was a fictional sports car race held at the Daytona International Speedway combined road course in Daytona Beach, Florida on July 22nd, 2020. The race was held over the course of one hour, and run using only Cadillac DPi-V.R entries which had previously completed a race in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The race was won by Dane Cameron in the #31 Whelen Engineering Racing entry, overtaking A. J. Allmendinger on the final lap after he ran out of fuel.

Entry list edit

The entry list included 12 entries from nine different teams, with Mustang Sampling Racing, Wayne Taylor Racing, and JDC-Miller Motorsports entering two cars into the race. Several drivers, including Oliver Gavin, A. J. Allmendinger, and Simon Pagenaud, entered without having previously competed in a Cadillac DPi entry in official competition.

Qualifying edit

Qualifying was commenced through a random drawing of lots, with no entry being seeded. Dane Cameron was awarded the pole, while Will Owen drew second place. A. J. Allmendinger and Renger van der Zande drew third and fourth place, respectively. The two JDC cars, after failing inspection twice, weren't included in the qualifying draw and had to start at the rear of the field.

Race report edit

The green flag dropped at 11:00 AM eastern time, with Dane Cameron jumping out front early. A collision between Simon Pagenaud and Filipe Albuquerque in turn one caused the former to head to the garage with severe suspension damage. Albuquerque would retire just over a quarter of an hour into the race with gearbox issues unrelated to the accident. Allmendinger took the lead with just under 40 minutes to go after opting for a one-stop strategy as opposed to the rest of the field. Cameron retook the lead around the half hour mark, but relinquished it again during his second stop. Oliver Gavin, who had been running third, suffered a cut right-front tire and fell back to eighth with around fifteen minutes remaining. Allmendinger held the lead until the final lap, when, coming around turn four, he ran out of fuel, falling back to finish fifth.

Results edit

A. J. Allmendinger led 18 of 41 laps, finishing fifth.

All entrants utilized the Cadillac DPi-V.R chassis paired with a Cadillac 5.5 L V8 engine.
