A serious effort to return journalism to the reputation it once had, and even more important, to restore the role of the press to its original purpose—that is, to serve as a breeding place for ideas and opinions

Fears: Some fear that this new direction in journalism will eliminate the traditional “proper” role of journalism, which is to be a fourth branch of government and to keep its eyes on those who really wield the power—that is, those who make laws and enforce laws. Community journalism demands putting the public interest ahead of the maximization of profit. The community journalists go beyond the facts. The only way for traditional journalism to survive is by abandoning its model of dispassionate, objective detachment and re-emerging as a proactive force for social change. They want journalism to drive corporate oligarchy out of the news business

Community newspapers, which throw much of their news and editorial weight behind providing local coverage and bringing the news home by finding the significant local angle to national and international stories, embrace their civil role by recognizing their public mandate to promote the general welfare of the community. The finest community newspapers recognize and accept this veritable covenant with their towns: that they are key stakeholders and players in the forces that help build and celebrate their communities
