Flughafensee Bird Protection Reserve

The Flughafensee Bird Protection Reserve (German: Vogelschutzreservat Flughafensee) is a 43 ha nature restoration project bordering Berlin Tegel Airport, Berlin, Germany.[3] Started in 1983 by NABU, the project is located next to Flughafensee, a flooded gravel quarry. The reserve is described in an official publication.[1]: 110–113  See also.[2]: 162–164

Jungfernheide forest (Jungfernheide Forst) lies to the west.

The reserve is contained within a larger 99.9 ha landscape conservation area (Landschaftsschutzgebiet or LSG), established on 1 July 1990.[a] Its official designation is LSG-27, Bezirk Reinickendorf, Berlin.[4][5][6]

There are calls to extend and upgrade the status of the area covered by the bird reserve to that of a nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet or NSG) following the planned closure of Tegel Airport.[7]

Events edit

NABU volunteer group edit

The NABU volunteer group is known as the Arbeitsgruppe Vogelschutzreservat Flughafensee.[8]

Natural history edit

Notable birds include the little bittern.

Outlook edit

The planned closure of Tegel Airport after the opening of the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) has lead to NABU and other citizens groups to call for an expansion of the area under nature protection.[7] As of January 2017, no decision has been made in relation to this matter. BER is slated for completion in 2018 at the earliest.

The Berlin state government (Berlin Senat) released a report.[9]
