Medicane Leucosia was a powerful Mediterranean tropical cyclone that looped twice over the Mediterranean. It looped once in the Mediterranean, and after weakening, looped again, and dissipated.

Meteorological history edit

A cyclone in the Mediterranean Sea was detected on January 24th. It began to move north, and began to quickly intensified, and by January 26th, 2 days after its formation, its pressure had fallen 20 millibars. It moved to the west on January 27th, and the storm executed a full loop as a strong tropical-storm force Medicane. The storm was reduced in size, and got a more hurricane-like appearance, with a distinct eye having developed, and a well-defined warm core in the center of the storm; the center of the storm was 6-8 degrees warmer than the surrounding air in Celsius. The 1 kilometer wind span showed winds of 65 mph near the storms center; however, due to models in the 1980s not being able to correctly estimate the pressure and intensity of a medicane, it is said that the storm was as intense as a Category 1 hurricane.

The day after, the storm began to weaken, and executed another loop as a weaker tropical-storm force Medicane. After passing between Greece and Crete, it dissipated on January 28 over the island of Rhodes. [1]
