Alex Popovkin, Bahia, Brazil

Alex V. Popovkin (1945-) was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and educated at the U. of St. Petersburg (1963-68), starting on a teaching career in its Dept. of Arabic Philology as Assistant Prof. (1968-77), before emigrating to the USA and settling in NYC. After 14 years in New York (banking clerk, Columbia University (library employee and graduate student in its Linguistics Dept.), and 10 years in the publishing industry), in 1991 he moved to rural Bahia, Brazil, where he still lives, dividing his time between freelance indexing and plant research.
