It is easy to use References Segregator when you know how. Here's the short version of the information from User:PleaseStand/References segregator.

Installation

1. Make sure that you are using a supported "modern" browser.
2. Copy the following code into your skin JS file or your common.js file:

   importScript("User:PleaseStand/segregate-refs.js");
   

3. Bypass your cache if you do not see a green button (labeled "Segregate refs for editing") below the text box.
   • This only applies to normal edit pages (not when editing a single section of an article).

Usage

1. To invoke the script, click the green button labeled "Segregate refs for editing".
   • This button is located just below the text box when editing a page, and it is not visible when editing a single section.
   • Section edit pages easily can be identified. If the "Editing" line at the top of the screen ends in "(section)", you are editing only one section of the article. Due to a technical limitation, you will need to use the "edit this page" or "Edit" tab at the top of the screen to use the script.
2. Edit the article in the top text box, the citations in the bottom.
   • If the article's source citations are located within the text, these have been moved to the smaller textbox below. That textbox was added when you invoked the script.
   • Citations that do not have identifying names temporarily assume names such as "AutoXY-1". Unnecessary automatic names are removed when you preview or save the page.
   • In some locations, the word "ref" may be capitalized in the text (as "REF"). This is an intentional feature that helps to keep the citations from unnecessarily moving within the article.
3. Preview or save the page.
   • In either case, the citations become part of the text again.
   • The script will warn you if you have accidentally deleted all instances of a citation from the text, but it cannot warn you of accidental deletions from the list of citations. You may wish to use the "show changes" feature to ensure that this is not the case.
