A flip trick is a type of skateboarding trick in which the skateboard does a flip. In many tricks, the skateboard flips upside down and/or end over end. Many simple tricks, such as a kickflip and heelflip, as well as a pop shove-it, can be combined to form more complex flip tricks. Flip tricks are performed whilst the skateboarder has momentum.

Flip Trick Concepts and Principles edit

Here is a list of the four most basic flip tricks which are usually the first real flip tricks most skateboarders start off with. They are, in alphabetical order; the kickflip, the heelflip, and backside/frontside pop shove-its; these are the two most basic pop shove-it variations that there are.

A heelflip is the same as a kickflip, only the board spins toe-side (towards the toes). For a regular skater (left foot in front) the board spins clockwise from the perspective of one behind the skater. Again, there is a kick as part of the ollie but unlike the kickflip it is directed forward and outwards away from the rider's toe side (diagonal), so that the last part of the foot to leave the board is the heel, hence the name.[1]
Invented by Rodney Mullen in the mid '80s, this trick came about as a failed attempt at the new trick he had created, the flatland Ollie. He noticed that if he ollied and dragged his feet off the board, it would flip. Kicking or flicking out imparts enough force to flip or spin the board on an imaginary axis running from the nose to the tail. If flicked harder, two or three full flips can be imparted on that axis, these are called double or triple kickflips. The original name for this trick after conception was the "magic flip" because no one understood how it worked or flipped.[2]
A Pop Shove-It is a combination of an Ollie and a Shove-It to get the board to do a 180 degree turn and get off the ground at the same time. This trick can be done Backside or Frontside, just like a regular Shove-It. Backside Pop Shove-its were first done by Tony Hawk on a vert ramp. He was trying to do a Backside Varial without grabbing the board. He learned to do a backside Ollie and scoop the board so it turns an extra 180. Despite being invented on vert, the trick is a rarity on any kind of transition and is more commonly seen done on street terrain.[3]

Other Flip Tricks edit

360 Flip/Tre Flip/3-Flip/etc.
A combination of a backside 360 shove-it and a kickflip. It was invented in 1985 by Rodney Mullen.
360 Heelflip / Laser Flip
The 360 Heelflip is simply a heelflip merged with a frontside 360 shove-it. Lesser known than its opposite trick, the 360 Flip, many skaters consider the 360 Heelflip to be much harder than the 360 Flip mainly because the 360 shove-it involved rotates behind the skater.[4]
BigSpin
The board spins 360 degrees, while the rider spins 180 degrees in the same direction. Can be done frontside or backside. Sometimes it is combined with a Kickflip making a "Bigflip" or a Heelflip making a "Bigheel". The trick is named after Brian Lotti, whose name sounds like "lottery." His friend named the trick after the California Lottery's Big Spin game.[5]
Casperflip
A Casperflip is a single midair trick comprised of two parts. Part one is a half-kickflip that is caught upside-down with the back foot on top of the tail and the front foot cradling the downward facing forward portion of the deck. Part two is a backside shove-it spun from this brief aerial stall. An Anti-Casper is a nollie Casperflip. [6]
Discoflip
The heelflip version of a sex-change (see "Sex-Change" for more info).
Fingerflip
To flip the board in any direction by using your fingers on the nose.[7]
Forward flip/Dolphin flip
A more advanced and fairly awkward trick, it is usually performed by popping the tail straight down and sliding the front foot directly off the nose of the board instead of off one of the sides causing it to flip vertically between the riders legs, the rotations of this trick could be described as a inverted vertical varial kickflip or an ollie late nollie hardflip.[8]
Front foot Impossible
a Front foot Impossible is an Impossible but using your front foot (or the foot you didn't pop with when referring to fakie or nollie stance) to Spin the board 360 degrees vertically.
Frontside/Backside Heelflip
A Heelflip combined with a backside or frontside 180 ollie. This trick is also known as a frontside/backside heel. [9]
Frontside/Backside Kickflip
A kickflip combined with a backside or frontside 180 ollie. A frontside flip is generally considered more difficult, as the skater rotates the same way he or she kicks. This trick is also known as a frontside/backside flip.[10][11]
Gazelleflip

This is a 540° shove-it where the rider also spins a 360° body follow and either a Kickflip or a Heelflip. Not surprisingly, this trick was invented by Rodney Mullen.

Hospital Flip
A Hospital Flip is similar to a Casper Flip, but are two different tricks. In a Casper Flip you turn the board onto your foot (Grip-tape to shoe laces) with your "sliding" foot, and rotate the board back with a 180 degree turn with your back foot. A Hospital Flip still turns the board, grip-tape side down onto your foot, but then that same foot pushes it back right-side up with a 180 degree turn, instead of using the back foot. This is considered easier than a Casper Flip because you only train one of your feet to do all the work instead of both.
Kickflip Underflip
After performing a kickflip the rider uses the front foot under the board to propel the board in the heelflip direction.
Late flip
A kickflip or heelflip (much more uncommon) performed at the highest peak of an ollie. These are normally (but not always) done with the back foot (always, regardless of positioning on the board, the foot one pops with).
Ollie Impossible
An ollie impossible, commonly known as an impossible, is an ollie where the board completes one rotation by rolling around the skater's back foot, in much the same manner as spinning a baton with one's hand. It is considered good style to make the board flip as vertical as possible. If the board spins laterally or comes off the back foot it tends to end up looking more like a 360 Pop Shove-it.[12]
Pop Shove-it Sex Change
A Shove it sex change is a backside pop-shove it and a frontside body varial, or a frontside pop-shove it and a backside body varial. It can be performed in all stances i.e. regular, switch, nollie, fakie. This is sometimes known as a Kastellarial or a Twisted shove it.
Pressure flip
Any flip trick that gains its rotational direction from the same foot that snapped the nose or tail. Pressure flips are executed using a scooping technique that is largely considered to be the downfall of technical street skating style.[13]
Sal flip
This maneuver involves catching the nose of the board after popping an ollie then spinning the board 360 degrees while in the air.
Sex-Change
This is when a standard kickflip is done while simultaneously doing a body varial(spinning of the actual human body not board) in either direction, the heelflip version of this would technically be called a heelflip sex-change but is more commonly referred as a "Disco Flip"
Twisted flip
A varial kickflip in which the rider does a body varial (body turn) in the opposite direction.
Underflip
Flipping the board by using one foot that is under the board and flipping it in a heelflip direction.[14][15]

Flip tricks are performed whilst the skateboarder has forward momentum, although it is not unusual to find skateboarders new to the skateboarding scene, practicing these tricks without it.

'Bold text'Bold text'==Flip Tricks==

Kickflip, Double Kickflip, Triple Kickflip- Kicking or flicking out from an ollie imparts enough force to flip or spin the board on an imaginary axis running from the nose to the tail. If flicked harder, two or three full flips can be pulled off.

Heelflip, Double Heelflip, Triple Heelflip- Kicking or flicking out with your heel from an ollie imparts enough force to flip or spin the board on an imaginary axis running from the nose to the tail. If flicked harder, two or three full flips can be pulled off.

Underflip- A half kickflip or a half heelflip that is then flipped the other way to land

Kickflip Underflip- After performing a kickflip the rider uses the front foot under the board to propel the board in the heelflip direction.

Heelflip Underflip- After performing a heelflip the rider uses the front foot under the board to propel the board in the kickflip direction.

Shove It, 360 Shove It, 540 Shove It- This is a mere 180 degree rotation of the skateboard on aan imaginary axis running through the middle of the board either in front of you (backside shove it) or behind you (frontside shove-It) using your back foot. If adding more of a kick then a 360 or 540 shove it can be pulled off.

Bigspin- 360 shove it or a larger degree of a shove it combined with a body varial the other way.

Varial Kickflip, 360 Flip, 540 Flip- A combination of a kickflip and a backside shove it, making the board kickflip while spinning. If the shove it flips 360 or 540 degrees, it is a 360 flip or 540 flip.

Varial Heelflip, 360 Heelflip, 540 Heelflip- A combination of a heelflip and a backside shove it, making the board heelflip while spinning. If the shove it flips 360 or 540 degrees, it is a 360 heelflip or 540 heelflip.

Inward Kickflip, 360 Inward Kickflip, 540 Inward Kickflip (A.K.A- Hardflip Variations)- A combination of a kickflip and a frontside shove it, making the board kickflip while spinning. If the shove it flips 360 or 540 degrees, it is a 360 inward heelflip or 540 inward heelflip.

Inward Heelflip, 360 Inward Heelfleep, 540 Inward Heelflip- A combination of a heelflip and a frontside shove it, making the board kickflip while spinning. If the shove it flips 360 or 540 degrees, it is a 360 inward heelflip or 540 inward heelflip.

Twisted Flip- A varial kickflip, varial heelflip, inward kickflip, or inward heelflip in which the rider does a body varial (body turn) in the opposite direction.

Sex Change- Any flip (Usually a kickflip, whatever trick preformed the name would be involved) that involves the body to rotate 180 degrees the other way.

'Hospital Flip (A.K.A- Casper Flip')- A half kickflip caght with one foot on the bottom and the other on the top. Using the bottom foot the foot slides the board 180 degrees vertacly to land.

Impossible, Frontfoot Impossible- Where the board completes one verticle rotation by rolling around the skater's back foot, in much the same manner as spinning a baton with one's hand. If using the foot not used to ollie, it is a frontfoot impossible.

Dolphin Flip, (A.K.A- Cockflip)- Performed by popping the tail straight down and sliding the front foot directly off the nose of the board to flip it verticly and in between the legs.

Late Flip- Any flip (Whatever trick preformed would be called the flips name would be involved) performed at the highest peak of an ollie.

Fingerflip- To flip the board in any direction by using your fingers on the nose.

Pressure Flip- Any flip trick that gains its rotational direction from the same foot that snapped the nose or tail. Pressure flips are executed using a scooping technique.
