Hi ARMcgrath! I think you should file a requested move so that other editors can respond and provide input and support first. Last time I did this, I unilaterally moved the article Dunkin' Donuts to Dunkin', and other editors followed up with me with opposition and fair reasons and guidelines to support it (including a discussion that, if I remember correctly, came to a consensus to leave the page title alone). I don't exactly know enough about Wikipedia to know how to formally go about accusing someone of sockpuppetry, but this Reddit post seems to have some convincing evidence of a new case.

All of the accounts listed at the link you provided haven't been active or made any edits for over 8 years. The most recent active account listed made their last edit back in 2016. There would be no point at all in pursuing this matter and filing any kind of sock puppet investigation report would be a waste of time. I appreciate your diligence and for bringing this matter to our attention, but we're simply talking about very old accounts where action simply isn't needed; they're probably long dead and forgotten by now. :-) ~Oshwah~^{(talk) (contribs)} 18:00, 10 March 2019 (UTC)

FIFA World Cup

Hey Oshwah, I think I'm having a little difficulty. I will have this content in bold and I hope you agree with me that it's not needed when it comes to specific countries at the FIFA World Cup.

The FIFA World Cup, sometimes called the Football World Cup or the Soccer World Cup, but usually referred to simply as the World Cup, is an international association football competition contested by the men's national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946, due to World War II.

The tournament consists of two parts, the qualification phase and the final phase (officially called the World Cup Finals). The qualification phase, which currently take place over the three years preceding the Finals, is used to determine which teams qualify for the Finals. The current format of the Finals involves 32 teams competing for the title, at venues within the host nation (or nations) over a period of about a month. The World Cup Finals is the most widely viewed sporting event in the world, with an estimated 715.1 million people watching the 2006 tournament final.

For a specific country (e.g. Germany) this content is unnecessary. I feel like I have been treated poorly. Hell, this even led to me losing rollback rights after I reverted someone's reversion of my edits (by @Ivanvector:). I was honestly not misusing rollback, I just wanted to revert to a correct version because they act like they don't give a four-letter word if the bolded irrelevant content is there. So Ivan incorrectly removed my rollback rights. I wonder when I can get them back. It even led me to a useless 31-hour block just for removing unnecessary content. I have been in general a good faith editor because I have taken down vandalism a lot.

See Spain for example. I don't know why users are reverting my removal if countries like Spain don't have the content. And I also wonder if I can get my rollback rights soon.

(edit) Now it's resulting in more edit warring, for example at England.

Any comments?

Hi Dolfinz1972, and thanks for leaving me a message here. It appears that Iridescent has sufficiently explained the situation and the issue to you here. What the perceived issue is with the lead section isn't relevant; what is relevant is that this is a content-related issue and it appears that you had your rollback rights revoked due to using them to revert edits in a content dispute and to engage in edit warring, which you've been blocked twice over the span of two days for and just over a week ago. The revocation of your rollback privileges by Ivanvector was a completely justified action to take; using rollback to revert the edits of others in a content-related dispute and to facilitate edit warring is perhaps the most severe manner in which you can improperly use the tool - and given your recent block log, it's going to take quite some time and your rebuilding of community trust before those rights will be restored onto your account again in the future. I highly recommend that you follow-up with the response and explanation that I linked you to, and make sure that you read and understand Wikipedia's policies on dispute resolution and edit warring. Understanding these policies and guidelines are going to keep you out of trouble. If you have any questions, you're welcome to ask me and I'll be happy to answer them - but if it's specific to this content-related issue and dispute, you'll probably receive a better answer by asking Iridescent or Ivanvector, or another editor whose involved directly and has more knowledge of the dispute at-hand. User Alvinwebster

Hi, Oshwah, it's one of your talk page stalkers here, looking for your assistance.

I found a strange case of a user, who seems quite new here (account created on 8 January 2019) but has lots of very advanced information on his user page (User:Alvinwebster). After a closer examination I discovered the page was mainly a copy of Girth Summit's user page (User:Girth Summit). As a first step towards explaining and fixing the situation I asked Girth Summit for comments. Then I plan to ask Alvinwebster. I'm not sure any action should be taken until G.S. replies, but I hope you could assist in further proceeding as an uninvolved admin, if you don't mind.

Meanwhile I'd like to ask you a question (just out of curiosity): do we have any standard routines for resolving cases like this one, when user boasts about achievements, skills and privileges they actually do not have?

Thanks CiaPan for brining this to my attention. I have indeed dropped the user a note, hopefully they'll remove the irrelevant content. If not, I'd appreciate any advice you can offer Oshwah - I wasn't sure weather to flag for CSD as vandalism, remove the dubious content myself, or what. I don't care about the imitation (the sincerest form of flattery, right?), but linking to my CVUA students' pages and claiming rights they don't have seems... dubious. Hi again, CiaPan! It looks like you've done what I would've done myself, which is to let the editor that the user copied their user page from know about it (which in this case was Girth Summit). However, unless the user is trying to impersonate Girth Summit, or make false statements like stating they have user rights that they don't (like being an admin), it's not a violation of policy for editors and users to copy the user page and information of someone else and use it for their own. In these situations, we must always keep Wikipedia's policy on ownership in mind and remember that nobody actually owns anything on Wikipedia - even the user pages of accounts. Hi Oshwah - just to be clear, they were originally claiming to have permissions they don't have - not admin rights, but rollback, new page reviewer, etc. I left them a note on their talkpage, but I noticed they hadn't logged in for a few days so I went ahead and removed stuff that was directly about me, while leaving everything generic. Multiplicity

Oshwah, you really need to clone yourself. Three would be a good number, which would enable the clones to take 12-hour shifts, and sleep for 8-10 hours, ensuring two of you are always available round the clock. Thegooduser - I figured so. ;-) That's (at least partially) because you're setting the color of a number of styles on your common.css page to be the color set by the variable 'colorname', but you don't declare that variable or set it to a color before setting styles to it. That's at least what I believe is going on. I don't know where you copied this code from, but the comments don't appear to point to where it came from. Let me know if the changes I made to your .css page result in any links turning red... this is what I set the variable I declared to be (just so we can see if anything changes). To answer your question: All pages that are created by an account must be looked at and checked, and marked as 'patrolled' or 'reviewed' by an editor who is a new page reviewer (an account that has been approved and given the necessary privileges to mark new pages as 'patrolled' or 'reviewed'). The notice you received just now was simply letting you know that I marked the user page you created as patrolled... that's all. :-)

Since you're brand new to Wikipedia, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial before you venture into making any major edits or changes. (edit conflict) Hi Wuhoo15 and thanks for leaving me a message here with your question. I'll be happy to explain the administrator role to you, and outline exactly who administrators are, and explain the process and expectations of users and how they would potentially become one.

Administrators on Wikipedia are volunteer users who are given (literally) a few extra buttons in order to carry out advanced actions that, for obvious reasons, can't be given out to everybody. That's the only difference between a Wikipedia editor and a Wikipedia editor who is also an administrator. Administrators have to follow all of the same policies, guidelines, rules, and norms that non-admins have to, and they have absolutely no "authority" above other users or accounts, nor do they have any kind of access to hidden "special things" like any exemptions from certain policies or rules, or more rights or "status" above other users to edit articles and content. Apart from the few extra buttons that administrators have in order to carry out those few additional actions and tasks, they are absolutely 100% equal and are exactly the same as non-administrators in regards to everything else - authority, power, "status", importance, and the right to make edits and changes to articles and content. They don't make up rules, block who they want, protect what they want, or do whatever they want - their responsibilities are to carry out the tasks that the community has allowed and outlined in the appropriate policies to carry out and only in situations that are deemed necessary and acceptable by those policies.

That being said, the administrator user right is a senior-level toolset that's only given to highly experienced editors who can demonstrate many years' worth of above-proficient and consistent policy knowledge, judgment, community trust, appropriate use of tools and policy, and other requirements the community deems relevant to examine before giving their support. It is not a user right that's given to new, novice, or even established editors on Wikipedia. To give you a good idea and perspective: I've been an editor since the beginning of 2007 (12 years), and I've only been an admin since August 2016 (2 1/2 years) - meaning that I was an editor on Wikipedia for just shy of 10 years before I was considered for the tool. You can refer to this guide, as well as this guide - for more information about how users become administrators, the process, the various requirements, and (in a nutshell) how difficult it is in order to become one. Most requests by users to become administrators fail, even by users with years of good experience. There are many good editors and contributors on Wikipedia who will never become administrators (for various reasons), and there are many requirements before even being considered for the role or even having your request taken seriously. In a nutshell: It's not easy.

Chris troutman touches on something that is absolutely true... most administrators (at least the good ones) are those who were repeatedly told by other editors that they consider them to be "admins without the tools", and are repeatedly approached by other editors and told that they'd be an excellent administrator, that they're waiting for the day that they'd run, and have their "support vote" already. ~Oshwah~^{(talk) (contribs)} 00:17, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

The page for Zali Steggall has been regularly vandalised since the announcement that she is standing as a candidate in the seat of Warringah against a former prime minister. Can we return it to a version of 20:10, 26 January 2019 and have the page protected until 31 May 2019, or a date after the federal election please?

Hi Oshwah, Zali's page is still being edited by people posting incorrect and inappropriate updates - the latest of which is a lingerie shot that has been photo-shopped as if it is Zali in it. It looks to me like Martin.j.fox is the person doing this. I'm not really sure what's going on as the lingerie photo is posted, then disappears, then appears again. Is it possible to get Zali's page completely locked (it seems to be semi-protected at the moment, not sure who initiated this) from editing until at least the Australian Federal Election, the date of which hasn't yet been announced but is expected to be mid May. Obviously we can't monitor the page minute-by-minute and given Zali's profile at the present time, these edits are proving extremely detrimental, time consuming and disruptive, an members of the public and media are quoting these updates in social media and in the press. Hi CiaPan! Thank you for the message and the very kind words. They mean a lot to me to read them, and it makes me happy to see that my edits and actions have at least some impact to this community and some other editors who see them. For someone who says that they don't speak or write English well, I think your English seems to be just fine. Apart from some grammar and sentence structure issues once in awhile, you definitely don't need to be afraid that you're going to say something completely wrong or incorrect. Your comments and writing are usually well stated, and I don't see any issues with your ability to articulate exactly what you're meaning to say.

I was busy with some real life things over the last two weeks, which is why you saw my activity level drop for a little awhile. Things are fine for the time being, but I'll be going back and fourth between being active and needing to step away for a little bit to take care of some things in my life. Don't worry - I'm not going to disappear and I'm not going away or anything like that. I just have had a weird schedule which has allowed me to have the availability and activity level you mention, and I'm working to change that in order to be more consistent and less "editing 24/7 for almost a week, then disappearing for a week"... haha. A lot of my edits are semi-automated (I do a lot of recent changes patrolling that's mostly responsible for my edit count), but I also take extreme care to be available and able to respond and help other editors when they ask for it. :-)

Since IP addresses can change from user-to-user, you're definitely seeing a message intended for someone else but who was editing through your IP address back when it belonged to them. Semi-protecting ITN/C

I was wondering if you would intervene. It concerns the user Admanny and the Australian Grand Prix page. The issue is that I was prepping that page for the upcoming race, something that is normal when the race is only a few days away. Johnsmith2116 - Unfortunately, unless there's a serious violation present on the current revision of the article (such as a BLP violation or violation of copyright), the current revision needs to stay as-is. When applying full protection to the article, I don't get to go back and pick a "good revision" that I favor or think is better and revert anything. I'd be choosing a side over another, playing favorites, and giving an editor an advantage over the other. That would be inappropriate and unacceptable behavior on my part, and I would be violating the protection policy and the community guidelines and norms if I did this. You two need to work things out on the article's talk page and come to a consensus and resolution together. I'm here to help; please don't hesitate to come to me with any questions, concerns, or if you need my input, advice, or mentoring over this dispute. Thank you for your effort. Initially, after the first reverting, I went to the user's talk page to leave a message, but it went ignored. After that, I didn't see the usefulness in leaving a message on that article's talk page, because no doubt the result would have been the same. ... I have two question, though. First, did you not see the merit in my edit? I thought that perhaps you would revert the page to show my edit, and then perhaps you could have frozen it there, as opposed to having frozen it where that other user had put it. And second, when that block is finished in a couple days, there is no doubt that the same behavior will continue, because, as I said, there was no getting through to that editor, which will very likely mean that they will continue to revert my page preparation as he did today. Johnsmith2116 - From what you described in your initial message regarding what you were trying to do on the article, your edits seemed completely reasonable to me. I had no issue or qualm with what you were trying to do. So long as what you're doing is with the intent to help us improve the project and make the article better, I care less about the content itself (assuming no serious policy violations are occurring, of course). However, stepping in as an uninvolved administrator means that I don't get to take these efforts and thoughts into account. Regardless of what you believe is correct and what Admanny believes is correct - what it all comes down to is the fact that this is a content-related dispute and you two need to discuss things and come to a consensus. I do not cherry-pick "the right revision", nor do I look first or touch the article when applying full protection. What the revision is at the time it's applied is essentially the "luck of the draw". Unless there's a serious policy violation which warrants me to remove and fix it immediately, I don't care about whose revision is currently published while the article is protected.

When investigating a dispute between editors and the editing warring of an article and its content, the content itself is pretty much irrelevant to me (outside of the content being serious policy violations, of course) - what I care about is the disruption that's occurring, the behavior of the editors involved, and the policy and guideline violations that are going on. It doesn't matter who is "right" or "correct" regarding content-related disputes, reverting the article in a repeated back-and-forth manner is not allowed by anyone. This is why I added full protection to the article, warned you both for the edit warring on your user talk pages, and why I'm working with you here to provide input and assistance and to help you with what to do next. What matters to me is that the editors refrain from reverting disruptively, that they behave civilly toward others, and discuss the dispute, come to an agreement, and work things out.

I understand that the other editor has been ignoring your messages. Keep at it, and if the user continues about their business after the protection expires, don't revert the article. Come to me (or another admin) for help, or file a report at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring. (edit conflict) Johnsmith2116 - No worries; edit conflicts happen and can be a mess sometimes to merge and handle. :-) To answer your question: Yes, if the user resumes making disruptive edits to the article after the protection expires, I have the ability to take things to the next step and I can step in and take the actions necessary in order to stop the disruption and assure that a positive editing environment is maintained. I would reach out to the user directly, let him/her know about the full protection and explain that you two need to talk and work together to resolve the issue. Point the user to the article's talk page and ask them to talk to you there. Then, start a discussion on the article's talk page and ping the user to notify them. Hi Tatzref! I'm not sure about what's going on exactly regarding this issue; my concern was just about the link you posted and the fact that the information contained another editor's personal identifiable information. What I can say is that I've had "campaigns" started in order to attack, harass, doxx, and "discredit" me multiple times. The best thing you can do about it is to ignore it, continue editing, be civil and respectful to everyone, and follow Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If these attempts to "discredit you" involves things that aren't true and you've done nothing wrong, then you have nothing to worry about and their attempts will be feeble and useless.

I know it's very stressful, frustrating, and is a very hard matter to just ignore... I'm not saying this to blow off your issue nor am I trying to imply that your situation is nothing. It's certainly not nothing... but if you can put these feelings and emotions aside and just tune it out, you'll be fine and nothing is going to happen to you. Most attempts like these are just an effort to scare you, wear you down, intimidate you, and chase you away... if they have nothing on you, then they have no ammo in which to fire. If you have any additional concerns, or if you need more of my input, mentorship, and/or advice, or if you have any questions - please let me know and I'll be happy to help you with anything and everything I can. Tatzref - I can't control the things that you and other people do outside of Wikipedia, nor do we have the power or ability to investigate matters and issues that are occurring outside the project... no one here will be able to do anything about what's happening on other websites. I would not advise posting the link until you know for sure that it won't violate any of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines - and even then... I absolutely would not add any external links to off-wiki issues, drama, fights, or attempts to harass or harm another person in any way. Zero can absolutely be divided just fine. If we represent the equation as represent as y = 0/x, dividing zero objects into any number of groups x will always result in y being equal to zero. Essentially, dividing zero items into groups will always result in each group having... zero items! Because you'd be taking a group of things (which is in one group by default) and trying to split them evenly into zero groups - it's not possible. It would be like trying to take 10 chickens (which, by themselves, is one group) and split them into zero groups. You can't have zero groups of things. Huggle

Hi,

Several times tonight, Huggle refused to send warnings to users whose edits I reverted because it thought they were older than a day, even though most were at most minutes prior. Is this a bug? Hi Adam9007! Warnings are usually skipped being left by Huggle if the user just received another warning within a few minutes of you attempting to leave yours, and if the warning is following an edit made by the user that's very old. This can be disabled in Huggle's settings under the "Warnings" tab (it's the very bottom option with a tick box). Adam9007 - The next step would be to use a different internet connection. Just connect your computer to your phone's data network, and make enough interactions within Huggle until you can determine whether or not this is still an issue. Huggle shouldn't eat up very much data. All it does is make API calls between Wikipedia, which is the transmission of simple text back-and-forth. Adam9007 - There has to be something wrong that involves the system time or something... There's something that's causing Huggle to read the time incorrectly when looking at edits in the queue, and skip taking actions because it thinks that those edits are older than what they really are. What time is it for you right now? What's your local time currently? Are you in a timezone where it's now the 13th of March? Yes, it's 13 March for me, and it's 1:57AM (GMT). I don't often have the opportunity to use Huggle during other times of the day. I was just wondering if it could be an integer overflow or something like that; maybe it's adding or subtracting 2 timestamp values so close together that they go below 0 or over a certain value and ends up with a really low or high value, which Huggle interprets as the edits having occured over a day apart? The edit I did on the PrimeTel Communications page was done based on independent research. My information regarding the MCI trunks was based on doing a RESPORG lookup with one of their sex lines ( https://www.somos.com/our-solutionsenduring-power-voice/find-toll-free-number on 800-244-8587. The company returned should be Coore, Inc with a trouble reporting number of 215-922-1707. A local number portability lookup indicates it was ported to Verizon Business in 2016: https://apeiron.io/lrn ). Using this information, I noticed the publicly listed addresses for Coore, Inc and Mayfair Communications are the same physical building with different intersections (732 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA and 101 S 8th Avenue, Philadelphia) - this information can be verified using Google Streetview. Additionally, attempting to originate the toll-frees directly on MCI's long distance infrastructure (this handles toll-free calls) results in the call being completed, whereas non-MCI toll-frees will not complete in this context. Finally, the Asterisk information was inferred from their use of the default Asterisk PBX prompts on their infrastructure. Additionally, while various public articles online point to the same thing (https://www.triplicate.com/csp/mediapool/sites/Triplicate/News/story.csp?cid=4395035&sid=923&fid=151), the RESPORG labels for Mayfair note their PrimeTel lineage: https://dipvtel.com/list-of-resporg-id-s-user/273-myr01-mayfair-primetel-3-1016.html .

Hemel Hempstead changes

Hi, I notice that you have blocked a user, 139.180.67.225, for making unexplained edits to the article on Hemel Hempstead. It seems to me that their edits were actually correct, they just didn't say what they were for. For example, s/he removed a header saying 'Further reading' - in fact, there were two such headings, one underneath the other, and they'd removed the second, uneccessary, heading, so it was a correct edit, just not explained. Hi Oshwah, good afternoon. I need help and advise. I had received 2 messages from my email "Someone (probably you) recently logged in to your account from a new device. If this was you, then you can disregard this message. If it wasn't you, then it's recommended that you change your password, and check your account activity." last week and as such I changed my Wikipedia password. I then received another email today with the same message. Is there a 2 step/level security log in in Wikipedia which I would set up and / what should I do? @CASSIOPEIA: Those emails are for successful logins. If you clear your browser cookies and/or change your IP address you would probably get these emails if you login again. There is a good chance you don't need to worry but it's still a good idea to enable 2FA. Notifications for failed logins should read like this: "There has been a failed attempt to log in to your account from a new device. I had got those message many times in the past as I travel frequently and using airport, facilities and friends devices with diff IP addresses in diff countries but I was a little concern that I received 2 emails back to back in 2 days last week. From the above explaination, I guess I had received those 2 notification because I changed my IP addresses (moving around a bit lately) and received the same message again today because I changed my password. CASSIOPEIA - Yup, that'll definitely cause emails to be sent if you're logging in from new IP addresses while you're traveling. It's a good notification to be alerting editors about, as this will bring compromises to their attention right away. I, however, receive the other notification that I described above and all the time - the one where lots of failed attempts are being made to log into my account. Does that channel being his official verified channel not count? And the fact that the link that was there went to a non-existent channel. Both his twitter, facebook and his creator page on the "Shorty Awards" all link back to that channel. Two out of the three references already present support "gustoonz" being his official channel name/link. Bullyology

Hi -

I had previously created a submission using someone else's username and password (which I didn't realise was a no-no, and she didn't either). I would now like to re-submit this under my own username/password. I am not being paid for this, but do know the subject of this entry (the owner of the business Bullyology). I believe when I submitted the first time, it was deleted by you on the grounds of being unambiguous advertising. I would like to submit again, but have no idea which part has been dee,ed 'advertising' by Wikipedia. Can you clarify?

Continuation of Demographics of Mexico discussion

Greetings Oshwah, I was meant to reply in the section I opened weeks ago [1] but I see it's been archived, I couldn't reply sooner because I spent the last week abroad. As an answer to your reply [2] yes, I think I'd like your help to solve the conflict in the article, to which I've made some modifications today, firstly, I restored the data [3] that, as I have previously said, was removed by the opposing editor under claims that shouldn't have place in wikipedia (i.e. dark blond hair and green/light brown eyes not being white people's traits) and had nothing to do with the sources he was presenting, sencondly I reincorporated the text that produced the discussion with a disclaimer of being "under discussion" [4], thirdly I incorporated the claims of the opposing editor and his sources to the article [5], followed by my claims and my sources [6] (I believe the discussion is easier to follow this way, presenting the sources as they are, because if you look to the talk page, the replies of the opposing editor are enormous and very hard to follow through). I'd like that you help me monitor the evolution of this discussion and give your opinion about it in case the other editor becomes conflictive again, thanks in advance. @Aryavirbhalla: (talk page watcher) If I may be so bold, it had a number of problems. It was promotional in tone. It used wp:puffery. Please use user:dlohcierekim/g11 for information about that. It also did not meet user page requirements. Please see user:dlohcierekim/u5 for lots of info on that. To be an article, it would need content cited from reliable sources that are unconnected with the subject and have a reputation for fact checking. Hope this helps. Hello, while I was looking overList of Malayalam-language authors's revision history I came across 2 users (Midlaj Khan basheer) and (Midlaj Raza Khan) who have very similar names along with editing the same article within 2 hours of each other.

Hi A 10 fireplane! Great question. Seeing two accounts that have very similar usernames can certainly arouse suspicion. However, you should also see if there's any evidence of these user accounts being used in a manner that violate's Wikipedia's sock puppetry policy (a list of uses that would violate this policy can be found here). It's entirely possible that the same person just stopped using their first account and then created another account with a username they thought was better. That happens quite often, and it isn't a violation of policy to do that. However, if you see attempts to be deceptive, perform good-hand / bad-hand editing, evade blocks, warnings, sanctions, etc or use them in order to cause disruption together - then you can file a report at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations; just scroll down the page, expand the "how to open an investigation" instructions, and follow them carefully. These instructions will help do most of the hard work for you and create a report on a new page. Once this is done, you'll need to edit the page and fill in the information missing (again, read the instructions). My revert here on Battle of the Beanfield was in response to your edit here that removed an entire section from the article with the edit summary stating that the content was repeated and already stated in the article's summary paragraph. I definitely understand why you removed the content, and I completely believe that you did this in good faith and believing that you were improving the article - so no worries! You're taught here to be bold and edit what you think should be improved. Mistakes made in good faith are completely normal; just listen to the feedback you receive and don't take offense if an edit is reverted (like in this situation). The reverts and the feedback are there to help you. :-)

Just know that articles on Wikipedia that are written properly contain a summary paragraph that does exactly what you removed the content for: It's supposed to summarize the information that's been added to the body of the article. Please help to stop an edit war in Merge sort

It all broke out when a user removed an illustration (special:Diff/887750333), which has been there for about 13 years (see Special:Permalink/91583531#Analysis). His edit summary seemed untrue and confusing to me, so I asked him for some explanation for his action (User talk page#Merge sort). He gave a reply at Talk:Merge_sort#animation which I do not comprehend. Anyway, I don't think the removal makes a big harm, whether justified or not, so I just left the talk.

However, some other user seems to think the image was important, and reinstated it (Special:Diff/888502969) improving the caption at the same time (Special:Diff/888502969 Special:Diff/888503335 – the link fixed by CiaPan on 23 May 2019) to explain what aspect of the algorithm it depicts. The remover removed the image again, even though he has declared before:

if you really think it's better to include, then feel free to put it back; I won't continue to object.

Neither my level of English nor my mediating skills entitle me to intervene in this conflict (the more so because I initially have been on one side of the barricade, even though there was no barricade yet at the time). Hi CiaPan! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your concerns and your request for help. I obviously can't cite my personal experience and career (since it would be original research), but I can definitely tell you that the .gif animation removed from the article absolutely depicts a merge sort. ;-) From the image, you can see that the algorithm divides the list of numbers into smaller sub-groups, sorts them, and then sorts the larger sub-groups up until the entire list is sorted. I believe that his response to you is simply stating that the animation doesn't show what he believes should be. I don't agree, but my opinion is irrelevant when acting as a neural party and purely in an administration role. From there, Jrheller1 restores the image, then Deacon Vorbis reverts the restoration, and things go back-and-forth from there....

I've applied full protection to the article and will apply it to any other articles that this edit war is affecting, and I'll be warning both users involved in regards to edit warring and following Wikipedia's dispute resolution protocol to discuss the dispute and come to a consensus. Please let me know if I can do anything else for you, and I'll be happy to do so. AFAIR, I did not reveal my professional experience at Wikipedia, too, but ...with decades^{[The exact number available via e-mail on request.]} spent on computer programming I have no problems with interpreting and understanding the dot-cloud illustrations of sorting algorithms. My question to Deacon was not 'what does the animation depict' but rather 'why do you think it's not what all belive it is'. I know the image is correct, and I think it is appropriate in the article. Anyway, if it is any problem for User:DV, I would let him have the image deleted. It wouldn't harm much.

I'm not happy though to see edit warring on such detail, and that's why I turned to you. Just for moderation. • The animated image conflicts with the algorithms presented in the article. What the animation depicts is a merge sort implemented using a queue instead of a stack (recursion). A queue based implementation results in a breadth first repeated splitting of the array until the size of runs is reduced to 1 element per run. The queue approach is not normally done because the queue space complexity is O(n), and the queue approach is not mentioned anywhere in the article. A stack approach is depth first, left first: the array split in two, the left half split in two, the left quarter split in two, ..., then and only when the leftmost two runs of size 1 are produced does the merge process begin, following the stack chain up and dawn in a depth first, left first order. A simpler fix would be to show a bottom up approach. In one step, the initial array is separated into n runs of size 1 (this is really not a step, as the array is just treated as n runs of size 1 without any actual data manipulation), then typically even and odd runs are merged in breadth first order. Rcgldr - Thank you for responding to this discussion and for providing your input. If the .gif animation is inconsistent with the other images, media, and examples published in the same article, I agree that it using examples, images, and animations based off different and inconsistent assumptions would be potentially confusing to readers. Consistency is absolutely essential when it comes to making article content easy to read and follow, and I take absolutely no issue with your (and other editors' efforts) to resolve these inconsistencies. My data structures class assignments and labs were mostly focused on building each sort so that they work with linked lists and arrays of lists, not so-much queues and stacks (though the application of such would definitely be common in the wild) - this information is what I didn't see when I took a look at the article, so I really appreciate you for clarifying and for explaining the issue.

My concerns here were mostly over the edit warring and disruption that occurred on the article, and not who was correct, what content is incorrect or missing, or whether or not any of the content, media, animations, or images needed fixing or improving. The disruption is where I step in and with the "administrator hat" on, where the root of the issues concerned me, and was ultimately what needed to stop. The content-related issues and concerns, while being the cause and the reason behind the edit warring and disruption that occurred, are things where the details are mostly irrelevant in regards to the disruption and the need for it to stop. They're things that I direct the editors involved to go and work out among themselves, discuss on the article's talk page, and refer to Wikipedia's dispute resolution protocol in order to properly resolve. I obviously can't do that part for anybody... :-)

Anyways, I hope that my response here helped to clarify where my main concerns were in regards to this dispute and discussion and where I step in and take appropriate administrative actions. Anything outside of that is (for the most part) irrelevant and where it's up to the editors involved to discuss and resolve, not for me to step in and fix. ;-) Thanks again for the input and for clarifying the issue and what exactly is being seen as problematic. Learning the ropes!

Hi! I just wanted to thank you for your kind words on my talk page earlier, and thought I'd ask for some advice on how I can better combat vandalism. So far I've been using Twinkle and following the recent changes page, but I'd love to know if there's anything I can improve / any way I can get more involved. Hi Vwilding! You're very welcome! I'm happy that my message earlier brought you happiness and encouragement. Excellent question! The page on recent changes patrolling is a great start. Since you have Twinkle installed, the top half of the page won't be very useful since Huggle handles what it's detailing for you automatically. However, the bottom half of the page is extremely useful and provides a ton of great information and links that you'll find to your liking. You should also check out this page as well as this one; both are lists of all the different tools, applications, and scripts that you can enable and use to help make patrolling and removing vandalism much easier.

What tool or page do you use to monitor changes and find edits that may be vandalism? When I was new to patrolling for vandalism, I used Lupin's Anti-vandal Tool (now a very old tool that's mostly forgotten) to list the changes that were likely vandalism. Look through those pages and find a tool to do this and that you're comfortable with and feel is easy for you to use. Another good place to browse through is the counter-vandalism unit page, which will contain a great deal of good information as well. Once you get comfortable with patrolling and reverting vandalism, and you've been making consistent good reverts, warnings, and adding good reports to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism - you'll be able to request and be granted additional user rights, which allow you to patrol, monitor, edit, and handle disruption in even more places and areas.

For now, just give those pages a read, and let me know if you have any questions about them. Hi Mynamemeansnothing!  Done. Next time you need to report any edits that need rev del or suppression, email those to me instead; you don't want to post them on Wikipedia publicly. As an example: My user talk page (this page) is currently on 924 editors' watchlists, which allows them to immeditately know when someone has made an edit to it. If you know about the Streisand effect, users who see your edit pop up on their watchlist and notice that you're making a revision deletion request will quickly run to the edit diff you provided so they can view it before it becomes hidden to them. We want to avoid this as much as possible, which is why all rev del and oversight requests need to be emailed privately. ;-) No worries though; I handled it quickly, and it's not a big deal. Thanks for the message and for the request, and please don't hesitate to let me know if you run into any more edits that need to be redacted. Hi Adam9007! Generally, no... draft pages should not have sub-pages, since they're supposed to be put together in the same manner that live articles are (just in a different namespace and with "Draft:" at the beginning of the title). ;-) It looks like the user accidentally.... He must've..... umm.... yeah, he messed up somehow.... LOL. It's formatted and written almost as if it's an article, and it's in the draft space.... but the content is clearly worded as if this is supposed to be this editor's user page. Long time no chat! ;-) Given that the page was created and edited only by this user and for his class / assignment, I'd say that the IP user is almost certainly Nche9147 and I went ahead and suppressed the IP address. Next time you need to report any edits that may need rev del or suppression, email those to me instead; you don't want to post them on Wikipedia publicly. As a perfect example that applies here: My user talk page is currently on the watchlist of 924 editors, and if you know about the Streisand effect, users who see your edit here and notice that you're making a revision deletion request will quickly run to the edit diff you provided so they can view it before it becomes hidden to them. Greensborough college page recent protection mistake

Hello, I requested protection for a school page not long ago (not under this account but I had to make one to talk here) after an ongoing edit war with what is more than likely students of the school. Our Social media, Wikipedia page and even website have been constantly bombarded with trolls, fake negative reviews and in general things that will hurt the reputation of our college and it is getting hard to keep under control.

The problem we are most concerned about in regards to the Wikipedia page is the editing of the principals name. It’s been through several stages of trolling over the past few months but has largely increased very recently. Recently it has been being changed to the name of a principal (Pauline Barker) who worked at the school for a few weeks but was fired quickly after making seriously offensive comments directed towards children that I would prefer not to go into for obvious reasons. This became a popular ‘joke’ amongst the students of our school and we have received many negative reviews and edits to this page because of it. Just for clarification, the principal of the school at this point in time is Ryan Shields, although this is likely to change in the near future.

Annoyingly, it appears a troll managed to edit the page before it was locked, as the name Pauline Barker is currently still on the page. As I am no longer able to edit the page due to the lock, I was hoping you could assist in the change, as having that name stuck there for good will likely be quite harmful to the schools reputation, as the public opinion of this person is far from positive.

If it matters, we are currently working on identifying and punishing those who are purposefully ruining the schools reputation online.

The best way for me to do this for you and in the fastest way is to have you go to this page, and follow the instructions and fill out the form to request an account - just put in the comment field that Oshwah sent you here and that you're requesting this as a doppelgänger. From there, I can just navigate straight to your request, create the account for you, and have it registered under your email and other information automatically. Sorry to be rude but could I get a reply? Greensborough College page mistake

Very sorry to seem impatient and demanding but this is a problem that we need fixed as soon as possible and ive noticed you’ve been online but not responding to my two messages.

If I am getting something wrong and you aren’t able to respond to them I am super sorry but please understand that I am really I need of a resolution to this problem and at the moment it would appear my messages have not come through or are being ignored.

This is in relation to the Greensborough college editing ‘wars’ which have been occurring. I am hoping to get proof into you as early as tomorrow but as soon as a solution can be reached the better, as this is a time in which our reputation needs to be perfect.

Please note that in your original reply, you stated that I was repeatedly changing the Wikipedia to something it was not supposed to be (Pauline Barker to Ryan Shields). But actually, the correct name, Ryan Shields has been in place for months, before the recent trolling began. I was only reverting the edits of the trolls, not changing what was supposed to be there.

Hopefully you understand and we can get this changed as soon as possible. If you have the time, please read through my three messages to get a full idea of the situation.

Once again, terribly sorry to be rude but this is extremely important to our school.

Until reliable sources show that the president of the school has in-fact changed, the information in the article will remain as-is. On an encyclopedia, hands-down and 100% of the time: it's always better to have information that's out-of-date but well-sourced, verifiable, and accurate at the time of its writing, than to have any information or content in an article that's unverified, poorly-referenced, inaccurate, or false. Gråbergs Gråa Sång - Indeed! This situation is a great example as to why we ask for reliable sources when users add content to articles that isn't referenced. This is also why it's very important to always maintain complete civility and respond respectfully to all inquiries, messages, and push-back and with the assumption of good faith, but we also don't back down from our original concerns regarding their edits and why they were not in compliance with important policies or guidelines. It's up to us to enforce and re-iterate the importance and the need for all users and editors to follow Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and we did very well in doing so above. We directed the user to have the school update their websites and content if they were inaccurate, and we kept to the bottom line: that we follow what's stated in reliable references, and that unreferenced changes and original research isn't allowed. The same IP also added that he died on February 3, 2019! The IPs only edits have been to this page, but other IPs have vandalized in the same timeframe. To answer your first question: I would bring your concerns to CaradhrasAiguo directly and ask why he believed that your message was spam, and ask why he removed it without taking it seriously or answering it at all. It read to me like you were simply messaging him and asking for an opinion (which doesn't seem harmful to me...), but he might've seen things differently. The best way to get an answer to your question and have your concerns resolved is to message him on his user talk page and politely express your concerns directly and ask. I obviously can't answer that question for him; all I can say is that I didn't see your message as spam, but again... there are always two sides and two views to every story, and he's the one who can answer your questions. I obviously can't. :-)

Thanks for pointing me to Anna Frodesiak's user talk page. You are correct in that the messages left were not acceptable, and I've suppressed them from being viewable by anybody. If you see messages like this in the future that attempt to "out", or disclose someone's private information like that, please email them to me privately instead. We don't want such requests to be made publicly anywhere on Wikipedia, since it will draw attention to the edits or messages by other people that wouldn't have done so otherwise. For example: My user talk page is actively watched by 928 different editors, which means that they receive a notification on their watchlist each time this page is updated or edited. If you know the Streisand effect, you'll know that drawing attention to edits like these is something we want to avoid at all costs: People will see this message, realize that you're making a revision deletion or suppression request and that information is about to become restricted and hidden from being viewable to them... so naturally, they'll rush to the page, find the edits, and read the information before it becomes hidden. To answer your question: All images or files uploaded to Wikipedia, the Wikimedia Commons, or any other Wikimedia site must have their license information provided along with the file on its relevant file page. Is it an image that's in the public domain and therefore free to be used without any restriction? Is the image copyrighted or is its use restricted in any way? If so, what copyright license is the file under? Is fair use justified with this image? If so, why? What fair use guidelines are met that allow this image to be used and shown in articles on Wikipedia? Having the image's license information added to its file page in order to disclose its restrictions, origin, and use ability is what will answer all of the questions above.

For more information on copyrights and how to add license information to your uploaded image, please see Wikipedia's policy and guideline pages on image use policy (copyright section), copyrights (in general), and Wikipedia's policy and guidelines on non-free content. Its saying that I need to put the tag in on the "File Description page" but I'm not sure what/where that is ? Is it the Ashley Artus Wiki Profile pic.jpg page?

It also says "Please copy the URL of this image or article in the email to assist OTRS volunteers to find it. If an email cannot be found in the OTRS system, the content may be deleted for lack of valid licensing information."

I did send a message the other day (about a week ago)...but have not received any reply ?

David Cone Edit Battle

Oshwah, just a heads up that someone has reversed your reversal of an edit to the "Retirement" section of David Cone's page. This is actually the latest in a series of edits and reversals for this section, and always the same changes - removing all references to Cone's eldest son Brian, and revisions concerning Cone's fiancé, Taja Abitbol. I noticed this change/reversal in January, and the process keeps repeating itself every few weeks. Different IP addresses each time. Not sure if this is trolling, or personal/family issues for David Cone. I sent a message to one of the IP addresses, noting that this change could be hurtful to the involved parties if not verified. Hi Fm451, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your concerns regarding the David Cone article and some edits that have recently been made. Looking at the edit history, I see that some IP users removed some content from it back on the 27th and 28th of February and due to being unreferenced and likely untrue. These removals seem completely legitimate to me given that they lacked any kind of references or citations. Not only are removals of this kind okay to be made, we encourage it. Editors can remove any unreferenced content (especially if the content is potentially negative, contentious, or controversial in nature) that exists on articles that are biographies of living people (or "BLPs" for short). We must scrutinize the content on BLP articles much more carefully than we do with other articles, and any content that isn't referenced by reliable sources that are secondary and independent of the subject are to be removed on sight if they are potentially negative, contentious, or damaging in any way. The onus is on the editors who are adding such content to provide the necessary references and that meet the requirements for being considered reliable.

Smuckola - I think we need to hold off on running toward administrative action at this time and spend more time trying to help and educate the user first. While they certainly have made some edits that others would see as disruptive and annoying, I believe that they're good faith attempts to be bold and try to help. I also see some edits that I believe are legitimate and even good ideas, such as their creation of 286 protected mode - a redirect page that you tagged for speedy deletion and an admin declined by inappropriately using rollback (I've since brought this up to the admin and talked to him about it). If, after reasonable attempts have been made to reach out to this user, talk to him/her, and ask them to review policy and offer to educate and help them - they continue to make disruptive edits and it's blatantly apparent that they're ignoring our attempts to reach out to them, we can consider action then... but as of right now, I believe that it's too soon. We've only left them automated warnings and threats, and told them to "stop it, you're new here and you should've been blocked earlier" - none of which are messages that are helpful. Keep an eye on this user, try and help them, and let me know if things escalate from there and another look into the matter is warranted and I'll be happy to do so. Hi SharabSalam, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your concerns regarding RonBot. I took a look at the bot's block log, and I see that the user was blocked and later unblocked after you created this message. I think that the issue you reported here has since been resolved, but please verify this for me and let me know if I'm incorrect. If you still see issues that were caused by RonBot and occurred after 16:01, 31 March 2019 (UTC) (when bot was unblocked yesterday after issues were reported and fixed), let me know and I'll be happy to look into it further, or file a report at the administrators' noticeboard by starting a new discussion.
