Black Widow (2020) edit
In February 2014, Feige stated that after exploring Black Widow's past in Age of Ultron, he would like to see it explored further in a solo film.[11] Marvel has done some development work for the potential film, including a "pretty in depth" treatment by Nicole Perlman,[11][12] and by May 2016, Feige stated that Marvel was "creatively and emotionally" committed to creating the solo film.[13] By January 2018, Jac Schaeffer was hired to write the script.[3] That July, Cate Shortland was hired to direct, with Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow.[2] By February 2019, Ned Benson was hired to rewrite the script.[4] Filming began in late May 2019 in Norway and the United Kingdom, and will last until September of the same year.[14][15] Johansson will also serve as a producer on the film.[16] Black Widow is scheduled to be released on May 1, 2020.[1] The film is set after the events of Captain America: Civil War.[17]
The Eternals (2020) edit
By April 2018, Marvel had met with multiple screenwriters to craft a film based on the Eternals, with a focus on the character Sersi. Feige stated that a film based on the group was "one of many many many things that we are actively beginning to have creative discussions about to see if we believe in them enough to put them on a slate."[18] A month later, Matthew and Ryan Firpo were hired to write the script for the project.[6] By late-September, Marvel hired Chloé Zhao to direct the film.[5] Filming began in July in London.[19] At the 2019 San Diego Comic Con, the cast was confirmed to include Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Lia McHugh, Don Lee and Salma Hayek as Ikaris, Thena, Kingo Sunen, Makkari, Phastos, Sprite, Gilgamesh and Ajak, and at the 2019 D23, Barry Keoghan, Gemma Chan and Kit Harington as Druig, Sersi and Dane Whitman, respectively.[20] The film intentionally features a diverse cast, with Ridloff portraying the first deaf superhero in the MCU. The plot will span the eons of lifetime that the ancient race known as the Eternals have lived and fought the evil race known as the Deviants.[21] The Eternals is set to be released on November 6, 2020.[1]
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) edit
By December 2018, Marvel was "fast-tracking" development on a Shang-Chi film, which would be their first Asian-led film. Chinese-American writer David Callaham was hired to work on the screenplay,[8] and by March 2019, Marvel hired Destin Daniel Cretton to direct the film.[7] In June 2019, Guntis Sics, sound mixer on Thor: Ragnarok, revealed in an interview that the film will be shot in Australia.[22] At the 2019 San Diego Comic Con, Simu Liu was revealed to be cast in the titular role, with Tony Leung Chiu-wai portraying the Mandarin. Awkwafina will also have a role in the film. Filming for Shang-Chi is set to begin in early 2020 in Australia.[23] Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set to be released on February 12, 2021.[1]
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2021) edit
By December 2018, Scott Derrickson had completed a deal to return to direct a sequel to Doctor Strange. Marvel was beginning to search for a writer, with a plan to begin filming in early 2020. Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong will reprise their roles. Elizabeth Olsen will co-star, reprising her role from other MCU films as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch. The film's genre was announced to be horror-centric, with intentions of it being "the first scary MCU film".[24] Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released on May 7, 2021.[1]
The film will tie directly with the Disney+ series WandaVision, making it the first MCU film to be directly tied to a television series.[25]
Thor: Love and Thunder (2021) edit
In January 2018, Hemsworth indicated his interest in continuing to play Thor, despite his contract with Marvel Studios scheduled to end after Avengers: Endgame,[26] saying the next month "if there's another great script that comes along" he would consider playing the character again,[27] and later added, "I'd play this character for as long as anyone would let me," crediting Waititi for revitalizing his interest in Thor.[28] They had discussed what they would want in a potential fourth Thor film by then.[29] By April 2019, Thompson believed that a pitch had been made for a sequel to Ragnarok that involved Waititi returning.[30] By July 2019, Waititi had signed on with Marvel to write and direct a fourth Thor film. Hemsworth and Thompson will both reprise their roles, with Natalie Portman returning after not appearing in Thor: Ragnarok.[31] During Marvel's 2019 San Diego Comic-Con panel it was revealed that Portman would portray her character taking on the mantle of Mighty Thor, similar to the comics.[32][33] Thompson's Valkyrie will be the first LGBTQ superhero in the MCU films, with the character's sexuality being featured in the film. As the new King of Asgard, Valkyrie will be searching for a queen; her sexuality was previously hinted at in Thor: Ragnarok, while a deleted scene explicitly depicted the character as such.[34] Thor: Love and Thunder is set to start filming in August 2020, in Australia,[23] and is scheduled to be released on November 5, 2021.[1] By August 2019, Waititi had completed the script for the film.[35]
In development edit
Film | U.S. release date | Director | Screenwriter(s) | Producer(s) | Status |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Black Panther II | May 6, 2022[20] | Ryan Coogler[36] | Kevin Feige | Pre-production |
Feige and Marvel have additional storylines planned through 2028,[37] resulting in many films "on the docket that are completely different from anything that's come before—intentionally."[38] Feige noted at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con that the studio has films scheduled to release after 2021, though they would not announce them nor the release dates at this time.[39] Disney has scheduled additional release dates for untitled Marvel Studios films on February 18 and July 29, 2022.[40]
Black Panther II (2022) edit
By October 2018, Ryan Coogler had completed a deal to write and direct a sequel to Black Panther.[36] By July 2019, Feige confirmed the film was in active development.[39] At the 2019 D23 Expo, the working title Black Panther II and a release date of May 6, 2022 were announced.[20]
Blade edit
A feature film starring Mahershala Ali as Eric Brooks / Blade was announced to be in development at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con.[1] Feige later revealed that Ali called Marvel Studios, proposing to portray the role with a pitch to make a new Blade film. The actor previously portrayed Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes in the first season of Luke Cage.[41] Kevin Feige confirmed that Blade is not part of Phase Four.[42]
The film will be a reboot, ignoring the previous Blade film series from production companies New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures. The film rights reverted to Marvel in May 2013.[43] Development on the project began as early as May 2013, with a working-script for the film.[44] By July 2015, Wesley Snipes stated that he had discussed the possibility of reprising his role, with Marvel Studios.[45] In October 2016, star of the Underworld film series Kate Beckinsale, stated that a Blade team-up movie had been discussed, but was declined because Marvel Studios had plans to implement the character into the MCU.[46] Later that same month, Kevin Feige corroborated this story, explaining that the studio had declined because they did not want to work with another studio on the character and decided to keep the film rights with Marvel Studios. In the same interview, Feige confirmed plans to bring the character into the MCU, acknowledging that the studio had considered Netflix and ABC Studios television series, though there were no immediate plans with the character.[47] In June 2017, Feige reiterated Marvel Studios' plans to integrate the character into the film franchise, stating that the Blade film series produced by Warner Bros. Pictures had an impact on him during his early days of working at Marvel; noting that the financially successful movies confirmed to him that various lesser known comic book characters could have successful feature films, regardless of an established fan-base. He likened the experience and the insight to the success of Guardians of the Galaxy. After calling the titular hero a "legacy character", he acknowledged once more that there will be movement on the character within the MCU at some point.[48] In August 2018, Snipes revealed that discussions regarding the character had taken place at Marvel Studios for two years at that point, stating that there are two projects in development for the character though they would not be announced nor move forward until Marvel gave them the green-light. Though the actor expressed interest in reprising the role, Ali was ultimately cast in the MCU reboot.[49]
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 edit
In April 2016, Kevin Feige stated that "Guardians 3 is [one film that's] up there" being considered for release beyond 2019.[50] In March 2017, Gunn stated that a third Guardians film would happen "for sure",[51] and the following month confirmed he would return to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.[52] However, in July 2018, Disney and Marvel severed ties with Gunn following the resurfacing of controversial tweets from 2008 and 2009 making light of topics such as rape and pedophilia.[53][54] Marvel planned to continue to use Gunn's script for the film.[55] Production was put on hold in August 2018,[56] ahead of the planned start of filming in January or February 2019.[57][56] In March 2019, Disney and Marvel reversed course and reinstated Gunn as the director of the film. Filming will begin in 2020 once he has completed his work for the DC Extended Universe film The Suicide Squad.[58][16] Feige confirmed that the film is in development at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con.[39]
Untitled Captain Marvel sequel edit
In February 2019, Brie Larson expressed interest for including the character Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel in a sequel to Captain Marvel;[59] while Feige previously said he had plans to introduce Khan to the MCU following the release of Captain Marvel.[60] The following month, Feige said he had "pretty amazing" ideas for a Captain Marvel sequel.[61] Feige added that a sequel could explore the time gap between the end of the first film and Danvers' next appearance in Avengers: Endgame.[62] Lashana Lynch expressed interest in reprising her role as Maria Rambeau in such a sequel.[63] Feige confirmed the film is in development at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con.[39]
Untitled Fantastic Four film edit
At the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, Feige announced that the Fantastic Four will join the MCU, in an upcoming film centered around the team.[39] Feige told Variety that the film will "[bring] Marvel's first family up to the sort of platform and level they deserve", after the critical and commercial failure of 20th Century Fox's previous film adaptation.[64]
Untitled mutant-centered film edit
During Marvel Studios' panel at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, where the plans for Phase Four were discussed, Feige confirmed that the studio is developing movies about mutants (which include X-Men).[39] Asked by IGN whether the mutants film would not be X-Men-titled, Feige acknowledged that the terms "X-Men" and "mutants" are interchangeable but went on to say that the MCU approach would be quite different from the 20th Century Fox film series.[65]
Potential projects edit
Untitled Ant-Man and the Wasp sequel edit
Ahead of the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp, Peyton Reed noted that he and Marvel were "hopeful" about a third Ant-Man film, having discussed potential story points.[66] Michael Douglas also expressed interest in playing a younger version of his character Hank Pym in a prequel,[67] something which Reed already teased back in 2015.[68] In February 2019, Douglas said of a possible sequel, "There's been talk [about another Ant-Man]... [but] there's been nothing formal right now that I know of."[69]
Untitled Deadpool film edit
After the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney was announced in December 2017, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that Deadpool would be integrated with the MCU under Disney,[70] with Ryan Reynolds expected to reprise his role as Deadpool from the X-Men film series.[71] The Once Upon a Deadpool version of Deadpool 2 (2018) was being watched carefully by Disney and Marvel to see whether it might inform how they could approach the character and integrate him into the PG-13 MCU.[72]
