Nakhijevan (Armenian: Նախիջևան, Armenian pronunciation: [nɑχidʒɛvɑn], Nakhijevan) or Nakhchivan (Azerbaijani: Naxçıvan, Nakhchivan) is a historically Armenian region south of Armenia currently owned and inhabited by Azeris. Nakhijevan is one of the 5 historically Armenian regions, the others being Artsakh, Javakhk, Western Armenia, and Cilicia (sometimes, when included, is part of Western Armenia).
History edit
Nakhijevan was part of the Kingdom of Armenia during antiquity but was taken over by many empires throughout time. In 1828 the Russian Empire took over Armenia, Nakhijevan, and Talysh. Nakhijevan and Present-day Armenia (except Syunik and parts of the north) became part of Erivan Governorate. When the Soviets won the Russian Civil War, Nakhijevan was given to the Azerbaijani SSR similar to how Artsakh was.
