About me: I'm British (so ignore any advice on the correct spelling of the word 'colour'!) and I'm a computer game designer/programmer with Midway studios in Austin, Texas. In my spare time, I edit Wikipedia (well, duh!) and I restore classic cars (the photo at the top of the Mini article is my current project and the photo at the top of the MINI (BMW) article is my regular car).

I've been looking at the edits you've done already - you seem to have a pretty eclectic taste in articles! Most people I've worked with on the adoption program get enthused about a particular topic and edit only a narrow range of subjects...this is going to be much more fun! This editing style suggests that you may perhaps turn out to be a WikiGnome (that's a complement - honest!) - which is someone who edits widely, fixing up small problems throughout Wikipedia rather than focussing on one special area. I'm definitely a WikiGnome - although I've written a few articles more or less from scratch (or at least greatly expanded some stubs) and pushed them all the way to the holy grail of 'featured article' and a coveted place on the front page for one day.

If you do have some special areas of interest that you'd like to contribute to, let me know and I can probably suggest a WikiProject to join which would put you in touch with other editors with similar interests.

There are plenty of other ways for someone with an eclectic taste in articles to make a difference. One is in adding 'classifications' to articles that lack them. The Wikipedia classification system produces that list of categories at the bottom of some pages - and a little tag placed somewhere in the article generates them and adds the article into a classification index. Another way is to join in one of the several projects that rate articles for quality. This is rather interesting because it gets you reading in subject areas you wouldn't otherwise think of - and I find it's rather stimulating to learn things outside my normal areas of interest. I'm in the habit of clicking 'Random Article' a few times each day when I have a bored moment and challenging myself to find a way to improve each of the articles I hit. Sometimes it's really easy (a spelling mistake or something) - on other occasions it can be tough.

I noticed you asked User:Kwen about article deletion - maybe I can amplify on what he said: Actual article removal is only possible for administrators - and you need to have a few thousand edits behind you before you'd stand a chance to become one (actually, it's a rather overrated 'honor' that brings with it a great deal more grief than joy...but some people enjoy the politics of it). For us 'mere mortals', we add the article name and some kind of a justification to the Articles for Deletion list - the deletion is debated by anyone who cares and then, depending on the outcome of the debate, an admin will either delete it or not. Sometimes the outcome is to move the article somewhere else - or to merge it with another article...it depends on the nature of the problem.

Anyway - good luck with your application to Dartmouth - it's a fine college. What subjects are you planning to take?

Beyond basic editing: The buttons at the top of the edit window are shortcute for the actual 'markup' language that Wiki uses. It's probably better to ignore them and enter the special characters directly, This web page (which I wrote for my own, personal Wiki) is a basic guide to Wiki markup that you can zip through and understand in 15 minutes flat. Most people find it's handy to have a page where they can mess around and try things out without wrecking the encyclopedia - so I've created a sub-page of your User page for you User:/Sandbox where you can play around to your hearts content without having to worry about screwing up something important! Page protection and Reverting Vandalism. Normal users can't protect pages - you need to be an admin to do that. But do you know about how to revert vandalism? Click on the 'history' tab - next to the entry for the vandalism, there will be an 'undo' button - click on that and it'll show you the 'before' and 'after' changes - click 'Save page' and you're done. To edit a LOT of vandalism, go to the 'history' tab then click on the date next to the most recent "good" version. That'll bring up that version of the page. Do a quick visual check that this is the right version - then click 'edit this page' and add an edit summary of "rv: Vandalism" or whatever - then hit "Save page" and you're done. The Three Revert Rule and Vandalism

OK - I looked at the editing history for Motherwell F.C. and there are some serious problems with what happened. (It's OK - you're new here - and that's why I'm here to advise!)

Firstly, you are saying that the removal of that short section of 'retired numbers' was vandalism - that is not necessarily the case (in fact, I'd be surprised if that were true). Perhaps the user '66.32.22.54' believes that this information is incorrect - rightly or wrongly, that's not vandalism. Vandals are usually much more obvious than that - expect lame jokes and obscenities, etc. There is (of course!) a Wikipedia guideline on what to assume is vandalism (WP:VANDAL).

We are required by Wikipedia to Assume Good Faith - which means that we must assume that 66.32.22.54 was acting in good faith (he/she may be wrong - but not acting to disrupt the encyclopedia). So if you believe that information that was deleted was actually correct, then there was no problem in reverting it the first time...after all, it might have been an editing mistake on behalf of 66.32.22.54. But when the information was again deleted, we must assume that it wasn't a mistake. At this point, the correct course of action would be to leave a message on the 'discussion' page for the article (and perhaps a note on 66.32.22.54's talk page too) asking why this person keeps on deleting that section. If you don't get a reply in a day or so - and assuming you KNOW that information is correct - then go ahead and put the information back in again.

In a serious content dispute (ie when you KNOW this information is correct - and 66.32.22.54 insists that it's not), you have to be prepared to back up your claim with some verifiable information - from a book or a magazine or a reliable website.

However, the back-and-forth delete/restore/delete/restore cycle that both you and 66.32.22.54 went through breaks a really important Wikipedia rule called The Three Revert Rule (generally known as '3RR') - which you should read about. It says that NO MATTER WHAT you do not revert a particular change more than 3 times in any 24 hour period. Both you and 66.32.22.54 broke the rule. This rule is an especially serious one to pay attention to because you can get your account blocked if someone complains about it to an admin. (Of course, you weren't to know - but now you do!).

The edits to Tom and Jerry in Fists of Furry have a similar problem. Again, both you an the anonymous editor broke the 3RR - and again, you couldn't really describe the other person's edit as vandalism per-se. (Although I certainly agree with you that it's an overly agressive attitude to take to a perfectly reasonably written stub - and I'd have removed it too). But again, after a couple of rounds of reversion, you need to get with the other person and discuss it. That template alleges Patent nonsense - but that's really not true. What the article says is basically OK - it's not gibberish. But the tactic that you are employing is not good - simply reverting over and over until the other person gets sick of it is a bad way to resolve disputes. Yeah - the template only says that the page is protected - it doesn't actually do the protecting - for that you need an admin (and a lot of red-tape and l-o-n-g anguished debate). I'm still following consequences. You left an (admittedly, mild) vandalism template on 66.32.22.54's talk page. His/her edit didn't rise to the level of vandalism - so I've removed the template. Accusing someone of being a vandal is a serious matter (it comes under the category of Personal Attack if done falsely) - it can get them blocked from using Wikipedia and you mustn't do it lightly. There is another human being on the end of that anonymous IP address! Read WP:VANDAL to understand what formally constitutes vandalism. I think we need to talk some about this (sorry to sound heavy-handed or anything - but you're doing some spectacularly good work here - and I don't want it screwed up because of a misunderstanding of some stupid rule!) Perhaps it would be wise to slow down a bit - maybe you'd like to consult with me some about things you think need reverting and the use of warning templates. It's why I'm here to help after all!

It's rare for things on Wikipedia to be urgent. If a section of text is deleted and you don't think it should - you can take the time to think about it, discuss it, etc. Articles on football teams probably don't get looked at more than once a week - the lack of a table of retired numbers isn't going to inconvenience anyone very much if it's missing for a couple of days. That's time enough to discuss with the other person WHY they are removing it and for you to explain why you think it belongs there. Things are a little different for articles that are in the headlines right now - but in these quiet backwaters of Wikipedia, we can stop and smell the roses!

It's good to see you hanging out on the reference desks too - I have a lot of fun there (Read that as: I spend way too much time there when I should be gainfully editing articles!) - I don't visit entertainments, language or math very much - but I hang out on the science, computing and miscellaneous ref desks quite a bit. If you want high Wiki-drama, I just sent my blood pressure over-the-top arging with User:NoClutter on the ref desk discussion page...argh!...what a pain!

A question

I am awfully sorry, but that still makes it a two-dimensional derivative work of Halo, so the image is subject to the copyright on that character. To put it into perspective, say for example I drew a picture of a cartoon character such as Bart Simpson; the original copyright would still apply, seeing as the threshold of originality is basically nil. If you plan to delete the image, please let me know, otherwise I may list it at possibly unfree images. The copyright holder, Bungie Studios if I am not mistaken, would have to, in very unusual circumstances, explicitly publish the character under a non-commercial free licence and forward the permission to OTRS. Sadly, your picture is gonna get deleted for sure. It would be better to remove it yourself than let it go through a long, painful process of review. Fan art like this is vulnerable to the original owners' copyright. You can't draw pictures of Mickey Mouse without Disney getting upset with you...that's very well established. Even though Bungie invited Fan Art, it was on their terms - you had to send it to their web site and they specifically said that you couldn't violate copyright in creating it (which technically means that they won't accept anything with Halo characters and vehicles in it...although I bet they do). They could publish those images themselves - but legally, you couldn't do anything else with them. Clearly they aren't going to sue anyone over stuff like this - fan art helps their business (well, within limits) - but rules are rules and they (or someone who might buy their rights to Halo in the future) might start getting nasty about it. Wikipedia has to be especially careful about this kind of thing - we are highly visible (one of the top 10 sites on the web) and on a budget of less than a million $ a year, we can't afford a lot of lawyers! It might have been possible to argue to keep the image on the grounds of 'fair use' or something - but an image used in a User: page doesn't fall into that category. So, no matter what, the image is 99% certain to be deleted. That being the case, it would be better if you did it yourself. It's a beautiful picture though. 2008 Pats

Well, it was a copy of 2007 New England Patriots season. So unless you were intending on fixing it fully within a short period of time, it would have been inaccurate. That other option would have been to just blank the page essentially, which would have also been pointless. It's dangerous to assume that just because an edit is by an IP user, that it is likely to be vandalism. It is true that by far the majority of vandalism is by IP users. But it's also true that IP users are a large proportion of the good posters. Many very established editors with 10's of thousands of edits have decided never to create an account. It was unfortunate that the user didn't provide an edit summary or leave a comment on the talk: page because that would have cleared this up in a moment - but that still doesn't make it a bad edit. I think the IP was actually right to delete that section - it's not at all well written - and it's not properly referenced. Poor referencing is ESPECIALLY damning when the material is controversial.

I see you also left a vandalism complaint on User talk:71.196.142.14 - and again, I've had to revert that. What 71.196.142.14 did does not amount to vandalism. Accusing someone of vandalism is a MAJOR accusation. You mustn't use it lightly or without being quite sure of your facts. Please read WP:VANDAL - which explains precisely what is and what isn't vandalism - and how to handle these more dubious cases. It says:

• Any good-faith effort to improve the encyclopedia, even if misguided or ill-considered, is not vandalism. Even harmful edits that are not explicitly made in bad faith are not considered vandalism. -- Remember, we are supposed to Assume Good Faith.
• ...significant content removals are usually not considered to be vandalism where the reason for the removal of the content is readily apparent by examination of the content itself, -- I think it was pretty clear why the removal happened when your read what was removed.
• Do not use ...[the vandalism]... templates in content disputes; instead, write a clear message explaining your disagreement. -- Using 'The V-word' is a serious matter, don't do it lightly!

Real vandalism is almost always utterly obvious - obscenities - insults - total nonsense (often quite funny nonsense!). The subtle vandals are much less frequent and they are much harder to detect - it's almost unheard of for a true vandal to delete the same section of one article over and over again.

Can I again suggest (as your adopter) that you take the time to talk with me before engaging in revert warring and (especially) before issuing vandalism complaints - at least for the next few times. I am here to help out after all! You need more experience in the mysterious ways of the Wiki before you unleash your fury on some poor, unsuspecting editor! I think you should have apologised to User:71.194.72.137 rather than telling her/him to stop whining. As I explained before, falsely accusing someone of vandalism is a pretty serious insult. I know you made a mistake and attributed actual vandalism to the wrong person - but it was your fault. Being upset (possibly even VERY upset) because someone accuses you of vandalism without good cause is not unreasonable at all! In actual fact, '71 had actually removed the vandalism - and you went and put it back in again - and yet another person corrected you a few minutes later! If you are getting your edits attributed to your IP address instead of your regular account name then it may be that you have your browser set up to reject cookies or to make them expire after a very short time or something. It's also possible that you aren't checking the box marked "Remember my login on this computer" when you log in - or that you are frequently telling the browser to erase private data (which would include cookies). I had all these funny ideas that it would fail again, and I was prepared for the worst, but at least it showed that the community really does have something other places don't. Who would have though Gmail would have been so effective? 32 emails in one week! (Even if it does classify some as junk :P) I'm glad that I've been appointed after a nail biting and some might call, decision changing RFA, but if you ever need anything, just get in touch.
