Newport Police Department
The Newport Police Department is a municipal police agency located on the Central Oregon Coast. Newport is the County Seat in Lincoln County, Oregon. The department is housed in the Newport City Hall located at 169 S Coast Hwy in downtown Newport. In 2002 the department relocated to the current location, the refurbished Naterlin School, from the old City Hall located at 810 SW Alder Street.
The Department is currently lead by Chief Mark Miranda and Lieutenant Jason Malloy. There are 21 certiifed police officers, five civilian employees and a large group of civilian volunteers. The department is responsible for law enforcement within the City's ten square miles and approximate 11,000 fulltime resident and tens of thousands of tourists who visit Newport annually.
The backbone of any police department is the patrol division. Newport's sixteen Patrol Officers are responsible for responding to calls for service, traffic enforcement and random patrols to help deter crime. Newport Police is one of only three agencies in the county to provide 24 hour law enforcement service to its citizens. The Newport Police Department's Record's Division is responsible for required reporting and report dispursement as well as evidence management. The Community Service Officer is responsible for enforcing city ordinances. The patrol division is supported by two criminal and one drug detectives. The drug unit detective works with other law enforcement agencies in the County that are part of the LINT (Lincoln County Interagency Narcotics Team). The department also employs a full time Drug Detection Canine Handler. While the Newport Police Canine Unit is assigned to the Patrol Division, it is routinely called upon by the LINT Detectives and other agencies throughout the county. In 2010 the Police Department started contracting for year-round parking enforcment. Previously the City employed a full time Parking Enforcement Officer only during the busy summer months. The department also devotes resources and personnel to other interagency teams including the Lincoln County Major Crime Team, Lincoln County Crash Team, Lincoln County Multidiscplinary Team and others. The department deploys bike patrol officers on special events and on routine patrol.
The department currently contracts with LINCOM (Lincoln County Communication's Agency) for dispatch and 911 services.
