A Mild Form of Madness is written in a subjective style from the point of view of its protagonist, Anthony Riedie, following his exact thought process (a writing style known as stream of consciousness). There is continual flow in seemingly disjointed ideas and episodes; for example, as Anthony moves throughout Chicago, minor events such as encountering a bum a bus stop or drinking with construction workers, unfold into discussions about separate experiences.
